Antler bone scales build
on: October 22, 2019, 07:58:06 PM
So my knife making friend gifted me a small antler for a custom build. First time working with this material. Quite easy to cut and sand to shape.

Still to decide what build to do, thinking just a simple Climber but with brass liners and exposed pins.

Will do final shape and finishing only once I’ve drilled the pinning holes. Will try to keep as much of the natural finish as possible.

Thanks RF52.  :hatsoff:

May be a week or two before I finish as I’m getting a hole guiding jig fabricated to make it easier to drill scales and liners.

:iagree:  Love stag covers, I think it goes exceptionally well with any traditional slipjoints, and really well with SAK too!  Look forward to the final product! :tu:

That is an awesome project Max! Very interested to see how it turns out. I love the look of stag scales, especially on a SAK. I've always had the urge for a Huntsman with stag scales and I have a feeling the end  result of your project will only make it worse!

Be sure to use a mask when working with it. I've heard the dust can be very bad for you (well, for anyone, actually...).

Awlso, using some masking tape over the cutting places might help prevent chipping.

Thanks pfrsantos, yes I’ve been careful with the sanding. Smells a bit like when the dentist drills a tooth.

Thanks Kraken, not yet decided the model to rebuild. Huntsman would be a good choice.   :iagree:

Well Kraken, 6 months later, eventually got around to finishing the stag horn. Took your advice and did a Huntsman. One of my old SAKs that needed a little TLC so was a good project to do. :tu:

Wanted only the end brass rivets exposed, so first did the 2.2mm inner rivets and then closed with the outer rivets. Was quite a fiddle to get the end pins through with this method as I normally build up one layer at a time.

Only real issue was that I used a permanent marker to trace the scales and it soaked into the horn. So lesson learnt.

Overall very happy with the result. A nice retro look with the exposed rivets. It will definitely be in my EDC rotation.  :salute:

I took a few pics during assembly.

Upon closer inspection YOU ARE CORRECT.  The permanent marker made of mess of this project.  Send to me and I will dispose of this mess promptly  ;)

The Swisschamp will look amazing.  Maybe after that you could do a 111mm?

I’m still to get into 111mm. But first need to find some more raw material...

And I should be getting my jig for drilling 91mm liners soon, so I can look at doing brass liners to match. Would be a nice project.
