Spirit of the Hike (Picture Heavy)
on: November 11, 2019, 01:00:34 AM
We were hiking today, and not for the first time I thought about taking some photos for you good folk here.
When we pulled into the parking lot at the trail head we could only see one other car. Promising for a quiet hike and enjoying the views and being outside  :woohoo:

Since I am doing the Spirit X challenge this month, the tool was of course riding along in my pockets. It also got some use, but more of that later.

The plan is to update this thread every now and then and show you some more areas where we go hiking. I won't be doing it every time, but depending if folks here like it or not I might do it more often
I also invite you to post pictures of your hikes, of course with some kind of Victorinox tool in a shot or two  :D

Before we get started on the trail though, first a quick shot of the general area we were going to today:

Let's go hiking! The plan was to reach a waterfall about 5,5 km in. So the total out and back distance would be about 11 km (7 miles). Pretty easy to moderate hike for Colorado.

This trail is part of the Colorado trail, which goes on for miles throughout the state of Colorado.

The Spirit is posing and you can almost see our goal for today in the distance. The waterfall is close to that mountain.

We are getting closer!

The trail was ok for the most part. The second half had more snow and ice though. As you can see a well traveled path, so I was quite happy not to see any other people. Well, at least until we walked back that is  Time we came back to the parking lot, it had filled up.

On the way up we came across the sign-in sheet. If you are not familiar with this: The sign-in sheet allows the Forest Service to see how many people utilize a trail, when they do so and from where they visit.
I noticed that the drawer was loose. So I got the Spirit out and tightened that bolt. Should be good for a while  :tu: I also used the blade to sharpen the pencil that is provided so hikers can make their entries.

The Spirit liked the patterns in the ice, so I agreed to take a photo of that.

This is something I found very neat. You can see how the ice/snow crystals were pushed upwards. I assume the wind had a good part in doing that.

Here it is: We finally arrived at the waterfall

Already covered in a thick ice layer, but the water is still running underneath it.

I hope you enjoyed my little tour through the Rocky Mountains. Let me know what you think, if this is something you would like to see more about, or if you had enough of ice and snow already

We were out again today, and I got some new photos for you! We started from the trail head at around 9 in the morning. The temperatures were pretty cold (-15C / 5 F) and so we were all bundled up.
Trail was in decent condition, yet we still put the spikes on. It was much easier to ascend the mountain that way  :tu:

View from the trail head

Multitool stuck in a log

Getting closer. The area looks also really nice in fall, when all the Aspens are in full bloom.
Here is a picture of the same area i took in fall 2018:

And this is how it looked today. Our destination for today's hike:

Only got a few close-ups of the mountains with my tele lens. The light was not very good and there were no interesting clouds or shadow to create some drama in the pictures. Still a good hike to keep up my fitness though  :tu:

That 70-200mm lens is awesome! It is inexpensive, yet crisp across the whole spectrum. The colors and clarity I get out of that lens are amazing, especially on a full frame sensor. Love it!  :tu:

The 70-200 is definitively one of Canon‘s most beloved lenses, and for good reason. Nikon has some pretty good lenses too from what I am hearing. Unfortunately you are kinda stuck with one manufacturer once you pick your camera body  :ahhh

That is very true on the lenses and other items. I went with Nikon because they made the first affordable commercial digital camera. The flash card it took was in MB - not GB. IIRC, the D1x could take up to 2GB which came out a year later. Then the affordable price of $5,000.00 kinda set my future for buying lenses in stone.

My first camera was a 450D. A friend of mine had the same camera and he loved it, so i got one too. Since then I am kinda stuck with Canon. Sometimes they are like Victorinox: I wish they would develop and apply new technologies a little bit faster  :pok: :D

With the electronic new technologies - 6 months later you have something new!
Better to spend money on Victorinox’s for sure!
