Day 15:

We had a wind storm a couple days ago (which drove the nearby wildfire). A few of the trees had limbs that were damaged by the high winds. I used pruners to lop off the affected limbs. I decided to save some of the limbs to use as supports in the garden. So, I pulled out my Buck Hoodlum and used it like a machete to remove extraneous leaves, twigs, and small branches. The Hoodlum was brilliant for this task. Keen edge, nice chopping profile, and a comfortable handle. A nice little knife...if a 10" knife can be called 'little'.

I like that, nice chopper  :like: There's a joke in all that somewhere about your 10" chopper, but I'm not going to go there... I'm too big for that...

I have the carbon steel PE variant. It is very good in the kitchen. Even though it is a bit expensive, I have been meaning to get the picnic set the serrated Inox #12 is exclusive to. And I'm betting the #6-based vegetable peeler will be used in the kitchen a lot, given how I EDC a carbon #6. I'm liking the Outdoor version better, however. A plastic handle is easier to sanitize.

The fire is only 15% contained, they report. However, it has subsided significantly and is mostly a smoldering mess from what I understand. More rain expected tonight!  :tu:

Day 11: PowerDelux 8-in-1 Multitool
Show content

This is a really slick little gem of a knife. It's 75mm long, so shorter than a Wenger SAK. It has a very sharp tanto style blade but the forward edge is blunted.  Very good scissors, a 2.5D phillips with nail file, a dual opener with a flat driver on the end, and a pretty good saw. All this in a very pocketable package. I carry this in the coin pocket of my jeans, and it fits even better than a Wenger. All the tools are locking as well.

I grabbed this little gem off of Amazon here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Z4DBFXN
There is also a "Bibury" branded version which swaps the saw for a line cutter, which you can get here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B082HNVJTB/
The line cutter is dull and can't cut anything without a good deal of sharpening, but the saw is actually pretty good. So you decide there.

Basically, the tools in this knife are based on Gerber Suspension tools. They're not identical - the pivot in these two tools is very slightly larger than the Suspension. However, the lock bar is the same and the profile of the tool is the same. So if you ream out the pivot in a suspension tool, it will swap right in. The tools that are actually included are pretty good. The only lamentation I have is the lack of a large flat driver. That's the only thing that seems to be missing.

As mentioned, the blade is very sharp, and though it's lacking an edge on the front part, it's quite useful as-is. (And if you have some patience, you can add an edge to the front for a true tanto blade)

The scissors in my PowerDelux came sharp enough to cut paracord. And cut it over and over and over again, and then even cut the individual inner strands cleanly. These are GOOD scissors. Better than the scissors in any Gerber I own. Suspension NXT, Suspension, multiple MP600s, and an MP400. These scissors are just better. The Bibury scissors were almost as good. I'm thinking that was sample variation. They could cut paracord if you're selective about where in the scissors you snip. So you may get good scissors or great scissors. In either case, both of these tools have better scissors than those in any of my Gerber tools.

On the other hand, the can opener sucks. It's a copy of Suspension NXT's dual tool, but with some changes. They added an unsharpened wire stripper notch (akin to the notch on a SAK), but also made the profile for the can opener smaller and did not put an edge on it. While bottles are opened easily with the bottle opener part, it is a struggle to open a can, and my thumb hurts after trying. The pic shows the difference, the PowerDelux required a lot of tiny holes, and lots of force to puncture, and it took forever. In comparison, the NXT made a smoother opening with fewer plunges, with far less effort, and in 1/4 the time.

The phillips driver fits more screws than any of the Gerber drivers I have. Suspension or MP600 or NXT, this PowerDelux slots into a variety of screws better. The file is short, but it works well on steel and aluminum.  And fingernails of course. The saw is another stand-out tool. Yes it's short, but it went through small green branches quicker than the SOG PowerPlay saw. (though just barely)

So overall, I find this tool supremely useful. If they'd fix the can opener and add a flat driver, it'd be just about perfect. As it stands, I use it all the time in place of a SAK. The locking gerber style tools are just a pleasure to operate. I like my Suspension NXT because of the tools. I don't like the pliers or the frame or anything else really. This trims all of that down so I have some of the essential-to-me tools from a Suspension, in a smaller package. And I can carry a multitool that's more suitable, or even one with a reduced toolset like the Gerber Octane or SOG Sync belt buckle, and still have a good selection of usable tools on me.

For under $12 bucks, it really is a great deal.

Charles

What a nice little tool! :like:

Day 15. I don't think this needs any special explanation or description. It is, however, my beater one. I sent it off to get rebuilt, neglecting to check the "sentimental" mark on the paperwork. Vic sent me back a new silver Pioneer (which I'll show later) and this one back. It's still perfectly usable, it's just that the main blade tip is bent, and the awl is broken. And, I don't have to worry about wrecking or losing my family heirloom shelf queen version (my great-Granddad bought it new in the '70s, I found it in a drawer when I was 11; and let's just say, I've been an Alox-aholic ever since; Cellidor only sees more purchases because they are cheap used).

My folks went with a different electrician, and the guy, for sure, is to be here tommorow. Guess tommorow's gonna be another TL-29 day.

Nice! I've been looking at bigger knives to serve as a chopper for brush cutting work. That one's in the running, despite being a bit expensive. The second one is the Ontario SP10 Marine Raider Bowie, which I think may be it; due to being very close to the old Western Bowie, and affordable at under $60.  Currently, it's a close to 100 year old Dexter 12" butcher knife. But, I've set that one aside to be properly sharpened, as I plan to use it skinning my first deer.

The SP10 is a big heavy knife. Heavy being the key word. Ask me how I know......

The virtue of the Hoodlum is that is is light and quick.

Forced to chose....I'd probably pick the SP10....for sheer awesomeness. But the Hoodlum is a more practical knife in many ways.   :dunno:

What a nice little tool! :like:

Yes, it really hits WAY above its pay grade. Basically, it's what I thought the Gerber Curve was going to be. It's what the Armbar *should* be. Gerber locking tools, in pocket knife format.  It's really a sweet little thing, and it takes up almost no space in my EDC kit. And it's just pleasant all around to use. Plus it's moddable, which I like.

Charles.

Day 16

Monkey King Tuesday!

I remember watching Ron Hood's video when I was researching how to put together a surival kit, and naturally I took the interest in the fixed blade under his name by Buck.  As Nix mentioned, this is a 'nimble' light chopper, but potential buyers may have to beware, there is a relatively high failure rate if this knife is used for batoning, I am sure this should be safe for light bush clearing, just not entirely sure it is safe to use to chop wood.  Of few cases I have seen, the knife always break at the notch which I think is unnecessary.
