Day 18

Ontario Rat model II

This was one of my first modern folders and it's a great knife.

Second is a JET-AER G-96 which is a special one and you can read about it

Here   :tu:

G96 were pretty good. I’ve read that the fixed blades were done by Ichiro Hattori. I have a #900 in the box still (102 woodsman clone).

Gonna have to pick up that French knife! The blade/handle geometry is perfect.

Day 18; a recent cheapo pickup; a Guidesman Panther from Menard's. We don't have them in my neck of the woods, but due to some recent moves by some major online retailers, my shopping habits have changed. Bought it online alongside some other stuff I needed.  I didn't expect much, and well, I didn't get much.  Honestly, I'd avoid this knife.  I could give a long list of similarly sized knives at a comparable price new and used that are far superior. And that being said, the Gerber Gator, the knife this copies, can often be found used for around the same price as I paid; $10 plus $5 shipping.

The rubber handle means some wonky fit and finish due to not having a proper backbone (Gerber does get this right on the Gator). The blade is not sharp. While 8Cr13MOV, I don't believe it as being hardened and/or heat-treated as well as budget CRKT and Kershaw that use this steel; and I have much experience with.  I have a very mild latex allergy, and the handles make my hands itch. My Mora knives with rubber handle inserts don't do that.

It is 4 7/8 closed--roughly the same size as the Buck 110.  I do like the ergonomics of the handle, so it's staying around as a beater until it falls apart.

DAY 19

Day off today so today’s carry is going to be UK legal EDC , the MP600 is Bladeless so doesn’t really qualify for this challenge but it’s paired with the little Gerber Wingtip slipjoint.

We had a similar poem that was popular when playing a drinking game involving a pair of dice, a large drinking horn, and two ping pong paddles. I never understood the rules......

Day 19: Smith & Wesson Cuttin Horse Double Lockback Knife. One of my first collection knives. Two very sharp blades, one plain, one serrated. The serrations are super aggressive and efficient. The lock for each blade is the furthest back, so the lock bar is quite long. Very solid, it really lives up to its name.

This is the way....

Been utterly busy today, but luckily find a little breather time to post.  ZT562Ti, love this version of Hinderer knife, in fact, I might even like this better than the actual XM18 3.5 which it is modeled after.  At the least, it doesn't have way too much jimpings which will rip up your hand if you flip open the XM18 too often.

Day 18

The purple Leatherman Juice XE6.  This is a tough little multiool that has seen a lot and always reminds me of a hard working ship on a very hard working deployment with one of the best crews.

(Image removed from quote.)

The Juice was purchased in a small little shop in Port of Fujairah, UAE in November 2001.  I was on the USS SACRAMENTO (AOE 1) a Naval resupply ship that would pull into Fujairah about every 7-10 days after passing all our supplies to various ships that needed them.  We would transit in at sunrise and transit out at sunset, loading as much fuel and supplies as we could in between.  After a few trips in, the Commanding Officer heard that there was a little store and sandwich shop real close to the pier.  He worked out to allow a handful of people off the ship at a time for about an hour.  On my one trip ashore, I bought the Juice and a CD.  It is amazing what a few minutes shopping can do to the moral of Sailors, especially when it is the only time ashore in 103 days with 106 underway replenishments of ships from various countries and even a couple submarines.  That Juice spent a lot of time on my belt during the rest of that deployment and my time in the Navy.  It is a little banged up and not as durable as some of the heavier duty tool, but everything still works and it will always have a place in my collection.
That's a good read, and I am curious, what CD did you buy?  I quite like the Juice offering, it fills the gap between full size and pocket tools nicely, and can never fully understand why LM decided to end that line.

Day18

A big Chopper.
This is the Aranyik Etoh, pictured with some past knives I didnt bother to move. This big blade is hand forged in Thailand and sold as a heavy machete ment for wood processing...which would class it similar to a froe or nata axe.
My last place had a fireplace and this was my go to for small splitting and kindleing. I would take this over most small hatchets any day.  The handle is oversized; you can get a one and a half grip on it and I've seen people mod them with longer.
Interesting knife, what do you think is the purpose of that big hole in the middle of the blade?  To hang it up or lanyard it?

Day 18

Couple Beckers. Camillus BK2SG and a Ka-Bar BK11SG
Very nice pair!

Day 15: Wenger Handyman - My Original Boy Scouts Pocket Knife

This is my Wenger Handyman. I've had this knife since I was 12 years old. I'm 42 now.  From 12-40 this was the only SAK I had ever owned. 28 years of SAK monogamy, and 30 years of ownership. The Sheath is something I made. In one of the boy scout camps I took a leatherworking class, and I was pretty good at it. So I got the big kit and made my own sheath. I also made a sheath for my dad, but he never used it. (he wasn't a knife guy, pocket or otherwise). It's a bit too big for a SAK, and I always pocket carry the knife. But when I'm not using it, it's stored in the sheath just because I made it.

The knife is now a hot mess. Bottle opener rivet has popped when used as a pry bar one too many times. Scales are beyond repair. Awl has a blunted tip. Scissor pivot is loose, and the blade tip is chipped. But it is a 30 year old knife that was used and abused. Every motorcycle trip I have ever taken, this knife was with me (Until the rivet popped). I never lost it in 30 years. I carried it in high school and never got caught, I carried it through an airport once and it wasn't confiscated (but I was still a kid, so it was a looooong time ago). This is my old friend.

I've gotten a Wenger from the same era, with the same tang stamping and I'm going to fix the blade. I will probably just file the awl back to sharp, and see if i can locktite the pivot (the threads are there, the screw just keeps backing out). I'll refresh the backsprings (pre-bend them by hand), clean everything, and put it all back together again, just like it was.  The only difference is I have some walnut scales that will go on instead of the original plastic. I just need to have them engraved first.

I'm a little resistant to doing this for some reason, though. Just seeing this knife, with it's patina, its battle scars, it brings me joy thinking of all the times it's been by my side. I'm also sad that it's in an unusable state right now. Part of me wants to leave it as-is, and part of me wants to fix it. Is that weird?

Charles.
