Today’s knife is the Gerber Pocket Square. I really like the design of this and would love one in a better grade steel

DAY 21
TOPS/Buck CSAR-T Folder.  Rescue tool version with a belt cutter, glass breaker, and the other side of the handle has a hex bit holder built in.  This is one beefy folder and it's got some weight to it.  Definitely not one you would want to carry in your pocket.  I hope to get one of the 154CM versions without the rescue tool setup on the end sometime soon.  The newer ones have a Rocky Mountain tread pattern that is cool looking in the G10 scales as well.  I didn't think I would like the modified tanto on these CSAR-T lines, but that rounded portion of the modified tanto is an excellent cutting edge and easier to sharpen (by hand) than I thought it would be.  I need to post my CSAR-T necker that kind of rounds this out before the challenge is over.

Day 21. 2019 Buck USA 283 Nano Bantam.

I had been carrying this Buck Nano Bantam last night when I changed into my shorts and was lounging around the house. Left it in my pocket, and noticed it was still iln there when I got up. Most of what I did today was just lounging around the house,so I didn't need anything better.

I bought this knife in October at Tractor Supply as a part of a Christmas deal two-pack with the 285 Bantam BLW shown earlier in this challenge for $20.  Having already owned an orange camo version of the 283, I was gonna give it away. But, I began carrying it around the house a lot, using it for light-duty stuff, and found how comfortable it was to carry around and use. The ergonomics are really good for a 3" closed knife.

Buck offers all sorts of camo patterns in many colors on the Bantams, but they are a hydro-dip process, which results in them making the handles slicker, and the pattern starts to wear in a week. Yet if you want bare plastic handles, they take the Ford Model T approach--black is all you get. I'd love to see some of the colors they have offered the 110LT and 112LT Slim Selects in.
Especially red, green, blue, and orange.

Day 21 (Happy Father's Day!):

So I'm going to tell you about today's knife. I'm pretty sure that most of what I say will be accurate, but there may be a few embellishments or details of uncertain veracity. Just sayin'....

This is the wickedly sharp Laconico Nessmuck:

So...right away I'm on thin ice. This is definitely a Ray Laconico knife. I got it from him and it has his stamp on it. But I'm not sure if Ray called it a Nessmuk or I did. And I can't remember if this was a knife Ray made for fun or I asked him to make. I'm going to go with this story: I asked Ray to make me his version of a Nessmuk. And this is the knife he made.

Diehard Nessmuk fans will declare that this is not a Nessmuk, but I beg to differ. Call it a leaf-blade if you must, but I think Ray took the concept of the Nessmuk and refined it. To me this looks like a humpbacked version of a chopped down butcher's knife. And like the original Nessmuk, it's a real worker.

Specs: a full-tang blade made from 1/8" 1095 with a full-flat grind and a micro convex edge (Ray may have put a V-grind on the edge, but in my hands it wears a micro-convex edge). The scales are pinned walnut. The OAL is a bit over 9.25" and the blade is approximately 4.5".

I'll confess, it is a bit large for an EDC, and I felt a bit conspicuous wearing this to the grocery store; however, Ray made a great sheath for it and it is a light knife. (That 1/8" steel keeping the knife light and lively.) The wide blade mean this knife 'tracks' well as it cuts. It works well as a butcher knife, it has enough 'belly' to be a good game knife. The thin steel and FFG make this a great slicer. It rocks well on a cutting board, too. The symmetric grip works very nicely with any grip or in any direction. This knife inherently feels versatile.

I don't think I've batonned with this knife. I'm sure it would handle small stuff well, but the thin steel is probably not ideal for batonning wet wood on a cold day. Nevertheless, this knife is meant for real life and regular use. In that role--spreading peanut butter or cutting string for staking tomatoes--it excels. I've taken it camping and it has served well. I can't say this is my favorite fixie, but it is right up there.

Today I made a big pot of Sambar, the South Indian soup of renown. (I make a kick-ass Sambar, if I say so myself, and no Indian Aunties are consulted.) This soup uses a ton of various veggies, and it gave me a chance to put the Laconico through its paces.

Chopping onion, brilliant:

Chopping carrots, excellent:

The Laconico even diced up an Acorn Squash:

In addition, I used it to cut up tomatoes, basil leaves, Bell peppers, green chiles, garlic, and string beans. The Laconico Nessmuk took on all comers and handled each with ease.

I doesn't look like much, but I think Ray channeled his inner Nessmuk when grinding out this one. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.  ;)

The size and blade shape, to me, are oddly perfect. To me, a 4.5" blade is where it's at on a fixed blade. Big enough to do basically anything, while small enough to not be obtrusive on the belt (like my Kabar that hangs up on every piece of equipment I get on or get off).
