DAY 26

This is a very special little Gerber that was given to me by Mike , lord of spammers way back at the first UK multitool meet-up. Despite its tiny size it sees plenty of use by me and easily slips into your pocket or wallet. MP600 for scale

Day 26
Since I commented in a disclaimer on an old business card being in yesterday's photo I figure today I'll show off two blades I have that were made by the farrier/smith it belonged to.

The 1st is a simple fold over tomahawk w/ an unwelded wrap eye. I've taken this on a number of hunting and hiking adventurous I replace the handle several times. The current handle is a piece of 1x2 red oak I just rough shaped and knocked the corners off.

The knife is an extra for a set of throwing knives he made for a competitive knife thrower that then wound up in a fundraiser raffle. This thing is massive and weighs 1 pound 4 oz. The sheath is actually the first non-cardboard sheath I ever made, as you can see by the extra holes it was originally supposed to have more rivets that does. This knife to throws beautifully and sticks deep.

That is a Leatherman ST300 sitting next to it for scale
Some of the heavy duty knife from cold steel throws surprisingly well, I remembered seeing a lot of one pounders in the knife throwing range, and they are near indestructible.

Day 26: A small "tactical" Elite force. These are made by Umarex/Walther, the handgun company. Not the best quality, but not very expensive, either. They're not my favourite brand, but this model is quite nice. Great ergonomics, perfect for office or small cutting tasks.

Really great knives everyone  :tu:

Nice collection of the soldiers, and the catalog behind is definitely eye catching!

Day 26

Moki

Moki year knives 2005 and 2006, with inlays of hardwood and azurite/malachite.
If there is a chance I would visit Japan, I would most definitely love to visit Seki city, where Moki is made.

Day 21: A Micro-sized Scissor Tools

I did a group of tools yesterday, so why not another today.

(Image removed from quote.)

I don't currently use any of these scissor tools regularly. I use the Paul Chen all the time, but these are drawer queens for the most part. One of them may end up on a set of my keys, maybe. From upper left in a clockwise manner, we have a modified Schrade Tough Chip, a cheapie Craftsman, a Sog Crosscut 2.0, and in the center a Leatherman Micra:

And since I wasn't paying much attention when I took the pics, they're in a different order when opened up in scissor mode.

(Image removed from quote.)

Surprisingly, the cheapie $10 craftsman tool has the best scissors of the bunch. They go through paracord easily, they're thick and beefy and exceptional at everything I've tried cutting.  Second place goes to the SOG Cross-cut. The extra leverage is nice, and the curved cutouts on the handles and tools make it more comfortable to hold. They don't quite cut paracord, but they do a good job at everything else.  I will say the gears do catch up on things and make it a little difficult to go through thicker material, but the scissors themselves cut through thick stuff with ease thanks to the compound leverage.  The Leatherman is third. The scissors are still quite good, but are even worse at paracord than the SOG, and they're smaller to boot.  Finally, the Tough Chip. Stock, this is the worst of the bunch. The scissors don't cut anything well except paper. Anything thicker gets bent instead of cut, and the scissors themselves are very soft and easily damaged by staples or even by themselves if you twist it the wrong way during a cut. However, I've drilled out the rivet, removed the spring washer, and filed down the pivot, and replaced the rivet with a screw so I can adjust the pivot looseness. In this manner they cut slightly better than the leatherman, but the soft steel is still a problem. So still last place.

Here's a comparison of the blades.

(Image removed from quote.)

The Craftsman blade is the longest, and it's the only one that's ground on both edges. However, I prefer the SOG CrossCut's blade the best. It's much deeper and has that nice indentation on the spine for my thumb.  The Schrade is my second choice, because it's the only one with a blade without a handle underneath it. So it could potentially be used for cutting food in a pinch. It's also the only one of these four that locks in place. In fact, three out of four fold-out tools on the Schrade lock.

Speaking of tools, they all have a similar selection:

(Image removed from quote.)

As said, all the fold-out tools on the Scrade lock except for the bottle opener/micro driver. The phillips driver, flat driver, and blade lock, but not the bottle opener/eyeglass driver. There is a very good diamond file (best of the bunch), a decent set of tweezers, and a beefy toothpick that are removable. Only this Schrade and the Leatherman had micro-drivers that fit eyeglass screws without modification.

The CrossCut also has a toothpick and tweezers, but they're attached to the tool. You also get a flat driver, bottle opener with too-thick eyeglass driver, and a worthless hunk of smooth metal they call a file. No phillips driver here. I like these tweezers a lot better than the Leatherman tweezers, as they're bigger and require less force to close.

The Leatherman here has the third-best file, flat driver, tweezers, bottle opener, and a usable eyeglass driver. The phillips driver is 2D and there... it's not the best at screws, but it's usable in a pinch. The 2D driver on the Tough Chip is a lot better, actually.

Finally the Craftsman. This is the only tool of the bunch that has a SAK-style backspring for each tool. Most, but not all tools, open with a nice snap. It comes with the second best file, it has a single cut on one side and crosscut on the other, and is quite aggressive. It's the only one here with a 3D phillips (albeit a small one) and a CAN OPENER (which also doubles as a bottle opener). It has a small punch/awl, a micro driver, and a flat driver as well. None of these tools have an edge. They're all super-polished by the factory, and I had to take a file to sharpen the flat driver, the eyeglass driver, the can opener, and the teeny little awl. Once sharpened, the can opener actually does a passable job of opening a can. It's small so it takes a while, but it works. The punch tool is too small and short to be of any use to be honest, but the phillips driver does a decent job. All these tools snap open nicely on the backspring except the eyeglass driver. My copy has a mm or so of play in it. I think I got a bad one, as another one on the wall at Ace didn't have that problem. I will say, the longer tools have far more SNAP to their backsprings, and even snap closed. The small tools will snap open but not closed.

So which one is going on my keys?

Well, common sense says the modified (sharpened) Craftsman should. It has the best scissors, a perfectly usable 3D phillips driver, the longest blade, the 2nd-best nail file, and a freaking can opener. It's the obvious choice...... but.... it's so.... BIG. It's huge, actually. Those backsprings take up a lot of real estate, and make it heavy to boot. It's not good on a set of keys. Same deal with the Scrade, it's too large to effectively fit on a keyring for me. It ends up being a choice between the Leatherman and the SOG. While the SOG misses out on having a phillips driver and usable nail file, the toothpick is a wonderful tool to have, and the blade is much better to use than any of the others on these mini multitools. And since it's replacing a Victorinox SD, I'm essentially just trading better scissors for a crappier file.

Charles.

Excellent comparison Charles, thanks  :hatsoff:
The thing with the scissors is a bit complicated often and results vary even on the same model.
It's often about how lose our tight the pivot is being assembled.
I've seen a tendency of lose pivots on Leatheemans over the last year's.
My Micra snips paracird just fine.... now.

I have that little guy too! LST? It's super lightweight and I've stuck it my wallet once when I realized i had it on me at a hockey game, and didn't want to walk all the way back to the car.  Great knife, super sharp, and extremely lightweight. Kept misplacing it so now it has a bright colored lanyard on it so it's easier to see :)

Day 26

After finding out about the Victorinox Yeoman on this forum, and seeing various examples here, I thought I’d try and find one..... Should have known better,... I suspect rocking horse manure and hen’s teeth are easier to lay your hands on!  So, I set to and made my own - most of the functions of one of my favourites, the Explorer, but one layer fewer, what’s not to like? Today it will be accompanying me on an exciting day at the desk, and then hopefully cracking open a few bottles later!

Day 22: Victorinox 91mm Knives

Here are my 91mm Victorinox knives that are routinely in rotation.

What you see is a SwissChamp with white Plus scales, a Marlboro Outdoorsman with red plus Scales, and a Marlboro Troubleshooter with blue Plus scales.

The Outdoorsman has a SwissQlip on it, but I actually almost never carry this model. It lives in a sheath and is rarely used due to the lack of pliers. It will probably accompany me on motorcycle trips in the future, though, as I always have a plier-based multitool along to make up for the lack of pliers. This thickness is about the maximum I feel is possible for a pocket clip. I wanted the clip on the Troubleshooter, but unfortunately the ring is a slightly different shape (lower profile) on the Troubleshooter.

The white SwissChamp lives in a sheath attached to the molle webbing on my favorite backpack, and it does get used occasionally.

The Troubleshooter however gets carried often. While I do prefer the inline phillips driver on both the Swisschamp and Outdoorsman, the Troubleshooter has pretty much everything I need on it for urban carry. While I miss the saw a little bit, I almost never actually need it. Conversely, I use the file far more than I thought I would, and usually on metal.  It's just a really good toolset for me.

Day 26. Just got this in the mail about two hours ago, and am putting it to use.  Had to replace the rubber feet on my chair (which my Great-Granddad made many years ago, as a part of a set which spent most of its life on the farm where my Granddad grew up), and while some of the feet just slipped off, others, which were a soft plastic, had to be cut away using the tip.

Late 1990s Spyderco C08 Harpy. Stainless handles, G-2 Steel  (GIN-1) blade. Used ,but still very sharp. I was very impressed by the little Ladybug Salt Hawkbill I have, but this knife, being more in my EDC primary carry wheelhouse at 3 7/8 inches closed, is even more powerful.

Hawkbills were something I only got interested in just a few years ago. I found an old Klein Tools hawkbill in a toolbox, and my Granddad gave it to me. Not long after, I'm doing a mechatronics class at the local community college. We often volunteered to help with stuff around our building, and I was often cutting and stripping wire. A buddy of mine carried a Case 62031LHR electrician's knife with the hawkbill blade, which he got from his employer. Granddad was employed by the same mining firm (whom he got most of his hawkbills from), but at a different mine, and had also ben issued an older 62031LHR in carbon steel, which I traded my Granddad for, and started carrying. I was given several hawkbills from that same friend. I got the Ladybug Salt around that time as well. I've bought several, and collect them.   The Harpy was bought for our upcoming Spyderco challenge, and for a bit more cutting power over my little Ladybug (which is currently MIA; and a PE was bought in its place).

Day 26 (Happy Ratcatcher's Day!) :

Fuzzy got my inner Celtic warrior all riled up yesterday with his basket-hilted broadsword. So, today's carry is a take on the Sgian Dubh, the traditional utility/defense knife of highland rogues, border reivers, and bagpipers.

This is a contemporary version made by Koyote many years ago. I had requested a Sgian Dubh from Koyote, we exchanged a few ideas and he made me a few versions.

This one has a 4" single-edge blade (with a bit of jimping on the spine.) and micarta scales. Koyote Girl made two sheaths for this one. One sheath is velcro'ed into the back pocket of a magazine pouch that rode on my web gear. I kept this on the front of my kit where it was readily accessible in an emergency or for routine use. A super-useful carry option. The second sheath is a small IWB sheath that keeps the knife discretely at hand. I believe 'Sgain Dubh' mean 'black knife', i.e. a hidden knife. The IWB sheath keeps Koyote's version true to the name. If it looks a bit worn, that's because it was. A lot.
