Day 23: SwissBuck Swiss Mate II

I missed yesterday, so here's my late posting! Sorry!

Today (err, yesterday) I have up my entirely unused SwissBuck SwissMate II. This is also known as the "Workman" when it has normal Wenger scales.  I bought this brand new a couple years ago, in blisterpack packing instead of the neat little green boxes. I snagged it for $100, and I sort of wish I'd left it in the packaging.  After 10 minutes of handing, I realized I'm not a huge fan of the 120mm format. For larger blades like this, I like the blade to be in the topmost layer when it's held in my right hand, not the bottom-most layer. I know this doesn't deviate from the 85mm Wenger format, but in a larger knife it feels wrong. It feels like this knife was designed for a left-handed person. What's more, I bought this to be a camping knife, and I quickly realized I'd be better off with a scissors layer instead of a dinky too-small-for-the tool pliers layer. The pliers are cool on an 85mm, but they're laughable on such a large knife. Part of me would love to mod in some Wenger scissors, but in reality this knife is probably best moved on to a collector or someone who will use and appreciate it. With the wrong-side blade and locking mechanism, it'd be PERFECT for a leftie I think.

I did attach a little lanyard when I thought this would be a user, and found a Victorinox micro driver screws right into the corkcscrew, which was a nice little surprise.

Overall it's a quality knife, but just not suited to my use, and I don't love shelf queens. My collection is all about tools I actually use.

Here's a couple more of my SwissBuck knives.  The first is a SwissBuck Taskmate I that I modded and added scissors, to make it a TaskMate II. This was the first SAK I acquired after joining this forum, and for a time it replaced my broken Wenger Handyman. It felt like having an old friend back. And it was my first modding experiment as well, since my goal here was to learn how to MOD saks so I could eventually fix my childhood knife.

The other is a SwissBuck Trekker, which I bought for a song, with the intention of popping off the scales and using them on my TaskMate II mod, as those scales aren't quite perfect. However, this little knife is in such good shape I've held off on doing that. It's not a pattern I'd ever use, and I should probably clean and oil it and move it on, but good condition Wenger scales are hard to find, so I'm probably going to hold on to it a bit longer.

These won't get a chance to be in the challenge so I figured I'd post them here now :)

Charles.

Return of the Fuzzaxe (except it's not Fuzzaxe) Post-bonus Pics

Took the opportunity this afternoon, between showers, to Hoick out a smallish tree stump. It was just a tad more challenging than expected and so I had to employ this ancient beast to finally dislodge it. I'm not sure what weight it is, but it's heavy!

Wee Fuzzy SAKs Day 28

Probably the most underrated and underappreciated knife I own... and yet one of the best and most widely travelled. Was the first SAK I ever purchased (myself) some twenty odd years ago after starting a new job.

Day 24: Goldblatt G05411 Drywall Multitool

Today is a Cheap and Cheerful tool. This sucker goes for $15 on Amazon right now, and it's a gem. The case sorta sucks, as it's not even large enough to snap closed without stretching and swearing. But it fits an MP600 pretty well so I repurposed it immediately.  I'm posting this tool today, because I'm going to be working on drywall repairs in my house. I have pretty much hated my existing drywall saw, as i found it awkward and the piercing part would often bend the blade instead of going through drywall. And so I'll be putting this guy through its paces today, as I cut out some drywall for a new HVAC return.

At first glance, the saw is very beefy, and will not bend easily. That said, it doesn't have the proper taper (thinner at the top wider at the teeth) that wood saws have. The teeth are also reversed, so it cuts on the forward stroke. So, it's not a re-purposed wood saw, it's actually a drywall saw.

The phillips screwdriver is actually really well formed, and fits into both the big screws in my door hinges and the smaller screws in my outlets quite easily. It's got amazing reach and it's a stand-out good tool.

Finally, the blade. The blade holder is pretty sweet. It's one-hand opening, and it takes standard razor blades. To eject the razor blade, there's no need to take anything apart. With the blade opened and locked, press down on the OHO stud really hard, and the spring-loaded blade holder is released. Very slick, easy to use setup.

All of these tools lock, using the Gerber style lock bars. I don't know if Gerber's patent expired or something, but I've seen more and more tools with the Gerber style locks. And I like that. It's an intuitive locking system for me, it's effective, and I've never had a tool unlock even when used to the point of abuse. Something I simply can't say for other multitool locking mechanisms.  This locking system is quite a bit bigger than the Gerber, but it's just as effective. No wobble, no play when the tools are locked. Unlock tabs are easily used and everything works smoothly.

Here's a size comparison:

Just from handling the tool, I like it a lot. But using it around my house just now, the first glaring omission hit me. It needs a small flat driver to remove light switch face plates. There's plenty of room in the tool to add another thin tool, as there are four thick ound washers in addition to the tabbed anti-rotation washers. Take those four extra washers out and there'd be space for another tool. If I were in charge of design, I'd also make the scales out of G1, cut holes in the stainless liners to reduce the weight, and add a big beefy pocket clip.

Charles.

Leatherman Wave, I was gifted a PST when I was much younger and used it for many years before discovering the newer model Wave.  Later on Charge was released, and I resisted the upgrade for many years, since I love the slim and elegant aesthetic of Wave.

I'll have to agree on the slim and elegant aesthetic on the OG Wave... and the better scissors.
Oh my... I might have to put an OG Wave onto the wishlist

Fascinating blades and stories, everyone!

Day 28

After many years of not seeing the appeal of the Pioneer, I am now a confirmed aloxoholic! No soldiers here, just Pioneers, the standard, a poor man’s black beauty, a lovely grass green from Berlin, the year knives and the Nespresso knives (though given that they lack the lanyard/key ring attachment, are they still Pioneers, or are they civilian soldiers!!??) - it’s the colours that attract me most to the alox series, and that o-so-useful awl - it just doesn’t get smeared in adhesive when opening packages like the blade does.

Sorry to hear about your problems with aloxoholism. Please feel free to share your thoughts and pics with us  :like:
