What to replace swisschamp with?
on: December 31, 2019, 02:19:42 PM
Hey guys. I'm on the fence... i want to buy a new swisschamp to have the better file, etc. But i also want to try something new. I love the alox models (don't own one myself) but i feel like they don't offer many tools. I can't afford a custom right now. Still wanting the alox... i ask for your opinion on either buying another swisschamp, alox or something different? I always carry a minichamp (with pen and tweezers), so maybe that helps my case? I'm sure someone here has a similar preference. Anyways, on my swisschamp i like the nail file/cleaner. I use the large blade, scissors and straight phillips. Can opener and bottle opener. saw. tweezers. pin sometimes. Pen sometimes. Magnifying glass occassionally along with awl. The pliers i use once in a blue moon. I don't ever use the chisel, small flathead, corkscrew (though sometimes the glasses driver), small blade, hook disgorger, parcel hook or toothpick. Help!

One to consider is the Expedition Lite. A nice write up here from member Max Stone:

You have to sate that yearning for alox - get an SI or a Farmer for design classics. Prolly won't even miss the other tools once you catch the alox pox.

Since you:
-  prefer a file
- have several other SAKs with complementary toolsets
- want to try Alox and don't have one yet

Cadet.   :salute:

Pair that with your Huntsman Lite and you have everything that's listed.

I would second the Cadet idea. The new ones have a much better file  :tu:

My personal alox favourites are the Soldier (pre. '93), Farmer and new Cadet.

Or... as a closer replacement to your SwissChamp... what about the Cyber Tool 41 (CT41)?

The Cybertool 41 has everything you want except the magnifying glass, or you could go for the Cybertool Lite, in which case you would have to do without the file.

Both of them miss the Phillips from your SwissChamp, but they have the bit driver, so they offer a good Phillips and more.

I've had my eye on a Cybertool for a long time, but couldn't decide between the Cybertool 41 or the Cybertool lite (the Swisschamp XLT had everything I liked, with some extras, but I found it a bit too wide and pricey to be a real EDC replacement for my trusty Swisschamp).

Anyway, couldn't decide which one to get, so didn't get either one... Until my wife and kids gave me both of them for Christmas  :D.

I'd also recommend the CT 41. I have one that sits in a kitchen drawer and pulls daily household duty. It's great for the day-to-day chores that a SAK excels at. I used mine extensively when remodeling our kitchen a few years ago. The saw, file, awl and pen came in handy on so many occasions. The bit driver is great and has enough bits for most applications.

I'd like to slim down. Unless there's a better way to carry the swiss champ other than the nylon with velcro Victorinox pouch? It's honestly my favorite tool besides my spirit, I just hate that pouch and it's too big for my pocket at work.

Maybe this thread needs to be a "what nice horizontal sheath for my swisschamp?". Any takers?

It's not a horizontal one but I like it very much.
Anyways, here's how I carry my SC/CT depending on the situation...

Again  :iagree:

I own two of those leather sheaths and they are by far the best ones out there in my opinion.

But most of the time I pocket carry my Swisschamp, hanging on one of those "belt clip chain" thingies from Victorinox.  Which makes it much easier to pocket carry those bigger SAKs.

Subscribing to the 'two is one, and one is none' train of thought...   There are some combo's that can keep all the tools from the Swisschamp and then some while each taking up less pocket space.  For instance...   A Champion and a Mechanic (or easier on the wallet - a Deluxe Tinker).  Or from the Marlboro line of knives the Outdoorsman and the Troubleshooter.  You have everything with these combos and gain the larger Phillips (plus you've doubled up knife blades and on a lot of back tools).   One in each pocket and much slimmer - or one in the back pocket.    I'd like to do the Mechanic or Special Mechanic as the other part with a Champion but they are hard to come by so I'm less willing to mess 'em up.  On my dual sport bikes I keep a Leatherman and a Champion in one of my kits now.  A lot of it really comes down to the tools you think you'll possibly need.  Here's a pic showing the Champion with a Special Mechanic, a Mechanic and a Deluxe Tinker, and also the Marlboro Outdoorsman and Troubleshooter (My favorite combo, personally)

Give the tools you use most frequently, I think getting either a CT-L/41 or another SC is the best option. I carry a SC at work in a small camera pouch on my belt. I've used a hanger and found it gets in the way too much when using the knife.

The old case hardened file is very good in my opinion. I have both it and the new one and prefer the older one for most tasks as it leaves a smoother result. It's plenty durable if used with a light touch and isn't abused. I've used it to grind off sharp protrusions on the shafts of drill bits.

I can absolutely recommend an alox Soldier/SI as a first choice alox. Fantastic, solid knives that feel better in my hand than an 84mm alox, and with no keyring to bite into your palm. Plus it has the truly brilliant awl.  :tu:

A Master Craftsman is a pocket friendly Swisschamp.  Get another Swisschamp...no matter what else you buy, you'll still yearn for a new one!

Based on what you said you use, I think the SwissChamp is probably your best fit.  Purchasing a Champion would get you a little slimmer by eliminating the pliers, but doesn’t get you a better file.

If you are willing to do a combo, the Explorer and Cadet might work.  The Cadet gives you an Alox and the nail file.  The Explorer would give you most the other tools that you use the minus the saw.

If you are wanting a horizontal sheath, you might want to try WideRiverChe on Etsy.  I ordered one from him that fit a 3-4 layer and it is nice quality soft leather.  At the time he didn’t have one listed like I wanted so I contacted him and he made it custom,

Pair that with your Huntsman Lite and you have everything that's listed.

Either this, or:
- Huntsman Lite + Alox Classic
- Huntsman Lite + Money Clip

Any of these combos should give you:
- Alox - check
- Pen - check
- Tweezers - check
- Nail file - check
- Large blade - check
- 91mm scissors - check
- Straight phillips - check
- Can opener - check
- Bottle opener - check
- Saw - check
- Magnifying glass - NO
- Awl - check
- Pliers - NO
- Mini-screwdriver - check

I did see that. I'll keep it in mind. The reason I'd get a newer champ is I dislike the file for what I've tried to use it for. Is the newer magnifying glass lens plastic?

The newer mag is glass, but it seems flimsier than the grey housing one and the lens pops out quite easily.

So better file but worse mag IMO.

Can't win lol. They haven't fixed the mag issue? Is it glued in or just sits in the holder?

Choices choices .  How to carry is usually top priority when considering a larger tool.  A nice sheath can make all the difference especially with the SC.  The link provided by Sos with that sheath looks nice.

We talked about the mag glass in another thread, and the issue was fixed in newer models. However there should still be Champs in stock out there that could have the issue. Multiple people fixed theirs with two small drops of superglue, if I remember correct.

and also the Marlboro Outdoorsman and Troubleshooter (My favorite combo, personally)

That’s my personal favorite SwissChamp substitute.
Some double-up on the scissors and blades, etc.
Only missing the Plus tools, which is a relatively easy fix.
