Who likes Black Oxide tools and why?
on: January 08, 2020, 05:03:51 PM
When I was looking for a second Original LM Supertool some half a year ago I wasn't especially looking for a BO one but found one by chance and like it very much.

Since then I've added 2 more BO MTs to my collection tool box.

I like the looks of how the coating wears over time, like coloured Alox with some pocket-wear. And it adds an extra layer of corrosion protection.
I also find it a bit less obtrusive (like stealthy) when used in public spaces.

Do you have a "thing" for BO tools?

I have no need for prevention of reflectivity, I find it sometimes wears too easy, and it does zip for rust resistance. But, it looks cool, and that's what I like about it.

Cheers Cody, I did read it adds corrosion protection, but I have no personal evidence to this  :dunno:

Definitively looks cool   :iagree:

My other LMs are too shiny. Nice to have a darker version  :drink:

I like the looks of the BO tools, yet I only have one. Main reason is that BO versions tend to be more expensive than their shiny counterparts, yet it does not add any utility. So I can hardly justify to spend more money on them :dunno:

I like BO tools as they look cool and another variant to collect. I disagree with cody that BO offers no additional rust protection.  It adds a layer of oxide to stainless which does add some additional protection.

The looks seem to be the main attraction to that tool blackening. Totally agree on that

It does look great, and the BO reminds me to my time at the Air Force too.
Thanks for confirming the rust protection

I’m unsure what “protection” it may add, and I’m sure most consumers only purchase BO for its aesthetics. Why else would LM start offering ss/bo combos, which was no doubt birthed by  :MTO:!!
I do love shining up ss to a mirror polish while watching a movie or something and have a need to fidget/maintenance a MT. Buuuut, BO does have the possibility of painting the engraved characters on the scales... thank you ducttapetech!!
I like how the scales get a little more shinyish with pocket ware... but I’m really not partial to one or the other as long as it’s a wave or crunch.... wait.. BO CRUNCH!! Yes I would buy that in a heartbeat!!

I really like the looks of the BO once it's well used. That's why I only carry this surge. Trying to break it in.

My newly acquired Wave is in about the same pocket wear stage... plus maybe a little rubdown with a rag after putting some lubricant allll Over it...Let’s show the progression to the awesome slickness that BO can achieve!
I’ve carried this less than a week, and was very new/factory matte black when I received it from a great trade with Time22

Sweet! I wish I had discovered the surge and the BO coolness before buying any other MTs. Oh well

Some buffing compound+rag+A LOT of time will get the SS to an envious stage! Unless of course you have access to a buffer... I love the look of any SHINY SS MT
I love the smooooothnes of highly polished SS!

Honestly I'm not sure. It came in a bag of spare parts when I bought a modded charge from someone. It is a little shorter, but far more useful to me, than the original full serrated blade. I've never been a fan of them, and the gut hook is handy for many things...including zip ties.

I don’t know why I never thought of this... but has anyone used the gut hook as a wire stripper?? I don’t gut much of anything but my bank account. But zip ties and stripping wire may just be the ticket for modding something I didn’t know I needed... thanks a lot mpgt... beans and bologna for the next month, sorry kids ::) :D

Before I got the surge, I was putting laminate floors in a rm of my house. On the last row, you are against the wall. You have to lift the planks and pull them back to interlock them. The only tool I could think of that would possibly work, was the gut hook on the charge that was on my hip. It was a life saver. I knew when I bought the surge, I would have to mod it. It's awesome now.
