Why no 74mm with a bottle opener?
on: January 17, 2020, 03:02:00 AM
The Executive is wonderful but i wish it had a bottle opener  :-[
The 84mm SAK's are wonderful but I wish they still made models with scissors  :-[
I guess that's why they don't make the 1 perfect SAK so you will buy 20 of them to compensate lol  :dunno: :drink:

VERY GOOD QUESTION!!!!

As much as I love my executive, the one thing I have wished for strongly is, a combo tool in place of the orange peeler. A scaled down combo tool liken the bantam or waiter would be a great improvement.

Hey Victorinox, you listening??????
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

A very good question.  74 mm is such a nice size, but the tool selection is just weak, intentionally so it seems.
I suppose it's because executives aren't supposed to actually make or fix anything, just write memos and attend meetings.

And peel oranges, apparently. :)

As much as it is "a tool I could care less about", I wonder why not as well. Especially given how much pop in glass bottles I have bought as of late.  The Executive is a Gentleman's traditional pattern in my mind. My EKA, and a couple others in the same size and pattern do feature bottle openers, coupled with a screwdriver (in basically the same position as the pen blade). So, I guess they'd have to ditch the pen blade. And in my opinion, I wouldn't mind. If it had a decent screwdriver tip, I'd like it. The one at the end of the orange peeler is good, but not the best.

Those Wenger 65mm tools in a 74mm Victorinox frame are just lovely! I'm wondering, how much modification to the tools themselves was needed?

They have one guy at Ibach that only carries 74mm's.   Rumor has it he can only handle about 3/4 of a beer and then he passes out.   It was an HR decision...
They say the pen is mightier than the sword.   However... there is a dead guy here with a Bic in his hand and a Samurai walking away.

And even then the Executive doesn't have a pen.
I'd like 74mm models with pen scales.

There was no modification needed.
I just added a thin washer on one side.

I too, would like to see just about anything on a 74mm, aside from what it currently has.

I've used the bottle opener on a LM micra for its intended purpose.  It works fine, but with much trepidation.  I'd worry that a similarly sized bottle opener on a 74mm SAK would be similar... just a backup.

All this talk of the Executive as of late has got me thinking.  To me, the Executive is on the wrong side of the necessary/unnecessary implement ratio.

The trouble is... I don't know what I'd replace them with  :dunno:  I can't, for the life of me, think of what I would want on a 74mm form factor.

The file and the orange peeler just have to go.
I think a combo tool of a bottle opener and Philips driver would make the most sense, despite previous comment.
Perhaps a flat driver, with a file, again.., despite previous comment.

That silly cuticle pusher on the MiniChamp... let's call it a pharmacist spatula... I wonder if that could come in handy.  Some traditional knives have it, so its probably useful.

Because there's no need for a bottle opener for gentlemen. They drink wine instead.

I use the cuticle pusher as a light-duty pry tool and as a knife pick. My Opinel got stiff from disuse and humidity, and had to use the cuticle pusher to get it open. The fingernail curve to it really helps.

Scotch, bourbon, have twist off caps.

When executives go for that bottle in the desk drawer to celebrate a closed deal, its usually a nice single malt scotch. Unless they are Texas oilmen, then its a good high end bourbon.

Ok, we have a week old thread on 74mm SAKs and still no post from Reinier? :ahhh Someone send a search party. :ahhh

:D

As for the orange peeler, it's actually a great tool and I'd miss it if it was gone. Mainly as a scraper and most importantly, clamb shell package opener, it rocks at that task and saves your main blades. I just wish Vic would ahve added the bottle opener to the middle of it where the belly is, one similar to the wenger one, there's enough space for it I think.
