Advertising on SAKs
on: December 30, 2008, 05:15:16 PM
In amongst the job lot of SAKs I got before Christmas was this one.

It just amused me that they'd choose a Swiss knife.  :)

There was also this

The little logo is inlaid and reminds me of a map symbol.  Does anyone know who's logo it is?

Has anyone else got any interesting adverts or logos on their SAKs?

Neil

Oh boy, don't get me started! I collect advertising knives IF they are interesting to me. I have loads and many are very unusual. I have photos of many classic models on my web photo album but still need to photo some of my larger knives. That is an interesting piece with the house and tree symbol. I have several with unknown symbols that are hard to figure out. Here is a couple that I can;t figure out;

Planes or people?

I thought this one was "Ballys" but I saw this symbol related to some company called "Brown and ???". I forgot to save the web link or remember it to compare. Now I can't find it again.

Here are some of my advertising knives....

Did you acquire the knives specifically for their advertising/logos or is that accidental?  Most of the time I find advertising on knives a distraction and I'll pay less for a model with it.  Sometimes though its the advertisement that makes it interesting.

I am put off by advertising as well.  I tend to avoid anything that has an advert on it.

I can't believe SAKheads don't recognise the Hostelling International logo! :D The slanting tree version is an older logo - circa 1980s?. Though some googling shows YHA Australia still uses the same logo. What's the knife type? I'm not a fan of logo'd SAKs but that one's pretty cool. Inlay is inlaid metal? If you're looking for someone to take it off your hands... :)

The only one I have is a Tourist with inlaid metal SwissAir logo. I can't find any information about it but I assume it was sold on-board along with the perfume and Swiss chocs. Oh, the irony.

Oh yeah, delurking mode. Hi everyone! First SAK was a Ranger. :climber: And still my favourite.

What a way to delurk. :tu:  You can come round here more often :D

Yes the logo is a metal inlay.  Its a Spartan made sometime between 1985 and 1991 so that fits in nicely with the older logo.  I'm not in a hurry to part with it but if you've got anything cooler you'd like to swap I'm all ears :)

I've noticed one or two SAKs with airline advertising on eBay.  The irony in present times seems to be driving their the price up.

After that resounding success I'll throw this one out...

Now I know Tele Chrome was an old TV transmission system proposed after WWII but I suspect this is a little more mundane.  I've searched for hours trying to match the logo and failed miserably :(

The advertising on them interests me, though I didn't single them out specifically because they were advertising knives.  They are just some of the knives for which I traded, were given, or bought for low prices at garage sales, knife shows, etc.

A former boss gave me the Champion advertising knife 20 years ago.  It belonged to his father who worked at Champion Spark Plug.

My mom found the Eli Lilly Schrade Walden pen knife at a garage sale and bought it for me 40 years ago.  It has sentimental value.

Some of those knives are quite old. The 3-digit telephone number on the Payne's Paint Shop knife is an indication of an oldie, for instance.

When the advertising adds historically to the knife I definitely think its an enhancement. On the other hand I could really do with not seeing another chuffing Classic advertising fat removal  :ahhh

Yes I'm quite proud of this one :)

Its not in the best mechanical condition but as a little bit of SAK history its great, so many unusual features on one knife.  I just really want to know where the logo comes from.

I want that one  :drool:

Irritatingly, there was one of those on eBay early last year.  I watched it and watched it, the price stayed reasonable and I was ready to dive in when I was attacked by my offspring. Missed it.  Not the first time that had happened either.  ::)

I'm not a fan of advertising knives, I don't even like the "Camping" scales on the Ranger and Camper.  Why do they do that?  :-\

Here is my only logo knife that sees any use;

It is on a Bijou SD that my wife picked up for me.

I don't mind too much if its inlaid but I dislike the hotfoil version.  So, do you know what the little boat is all about or is it just another mystery logo? :)

No idea what the paddle steamer is about, SHMBO picked it up second hand.
