 :iagree:

Are you going to use this as-is JR?
If it turns out to be less durable than you thought, you might want to consider doing a Shapeways order for something in metal. Just upload the STL file, I think they check the file and can then calculate the costs for printing.

BTW I like the Star Wars models :D

Metal print of this size would be quite expensive? A cute scaled down version for small stuff sounds like a possible idea? If he wants to start making scale models of the scale models?

He already have a physical model so a sandcast version in aluminium should be quite feasible? A little shrink doesn't really matter for this I assume, and the model itself is almost casting ready as is. (Adding a bit of draft angles on the topside of the lower foot part would make it a bit easier to free it cleanly from the sand).

It is weirdly fun! :iagree:

Aluminium casting is quite accessible. Suitable casting aluminium can be sourced from aluminium car rims, and the casting temperature of about 700-750C isn't too bad. Even the casting sand is easily found in toy shops as sticky play sand. (Just throw away the burnt parts and recycle the rest. The play sand works as it actually started out as casting sand - some employee decided kids might want to play with it). Then again, I guess there might be many brands of playsands - not all might be good.

Of course extreme care needs to be taken with any molten metal - and molten aluminium is sticky I've been told.

It does indeed seem quite unbalanced in favor of the dark side. They had more stuff though so it makes sense.

A bit of sanding and that thing should be close to perfect! :tu: Lets hope it works as intended.

I got a Star Wars set for a bargain, I just finished it with a destroyer droid, what ever the heck that is? The kid knew, I don’t even know what side it’s on?

I got some I think 600grit “wet” sandpaper I might give it a little rub down with, after that I don’t think it needs anything better, gotta figure the metal that’s going to be pressing against it isn’t 100% smooth, it was cut somehow so there’s a little bit of a rough edge!

Thanks,
I’m hoping to just maybe just make it a little smoother but other then that just the way it is, the pieces that need bending are very thin, and they even have lines where your to bend them making them even thinner (thus why they say not to bend too many times, cause they fall apart!) and easier to bend, I mean I can bend these by finger but the trick it to get the most clean bend, just been doing so by pliers and anything with a curve to get the right one to line the edging up,

I have no idea either. I just figured it wouldn't be much of underdog rebels if they had more and better gear than the other side?  :dunno:

Looking at it one wouldn't think it started out totally flat. It is like some advanced metal version of that japanese folding thing, eh, hajime? makrame? oregano? Ah, it will come to me.

But regular origami, can bend many times.
This metal stuff? Measure twice, bend once.

Bending work hardens it which makes it more brittle. So bend, anneal, bend some more?

Yes, origami, that is the one!

Now look at the 3D, see where the base is, so wouldn’t the green part be solid and then the actual print start being hollow?

That was unfortunate.

I would have lifted the bottom of the part from the printer using a raft of supports. And tilted the parts some to minimize the areas of extreme overhangs. (You get that somewhere with this part whatever you do, but the size of the problem areas are different depending on the orientation).

What material was used to print it? Some are easier to fill, glue or weld than others.

Kinda put it to use today, it’s just this model is a very hard one which means it has a lot of small pieces, and so far hasn’t really needed anything with a special curve that I couldn’t do by hand or pliers.. but I did try a few angles and it did fine, so until next time Tony Stark is just going to have to wait, unless he only wants to walk around in boots.. lol

Thus, that tool will come in handy for maybe a few curves, but not much, maybe if it was smaller but still not many,,

Did a little more work today on tony, here’s a pic of one of the pieces I could show that the tool works, the hip joint needed to be formed round yet with a angle, so that one part worked perfect, there’s a few more coming up that the dome will be needed, I did use that side tonight but this thing has such small pieces and very slim needle nose pliers make it easier, but here’s a pic..

How much smaller would you have made that tool?

Err, tough call, I’d say anywhere between 1/2-3/4, it’s tricky because each model requires diff radius, shape, and size.. I just finished this arm which is 16 pieces , I couldn’t use the tool on any parts because of the size, but the shoulder and hand curve a marble would have been a good size,,
