Mello Yellow Skeletool
on: January 28, 2020, 03:34:07 AM
Anxiously waiting for my 3d printed metal parts to come in, but it hasn't stopped me from doing some more tinkering. I really wanted to see what else I could do to the Skele, for a deep custom tool. I removed the rivet that held the bit retaining plate in place and replaced it with a M2.5 threaded insert and 2 M2.5 bolts. This allowed me to remove the aluminum spacer and replace it with whatever I want. My intention is to make either custom spacers so something like an awl-type bit could be safely stored there, or even smaller attachments, with the M2.5 screws, you can do that now!

I also received some different style mini utility blades, ones with a single hole in the middle. This needed a revamp of my Skutility blade holder, just a single button captures the blade and holds it tight. Currently printed only in plastic but sooner or later, I'll be getting it made in metal. Lastly, the hammer insert isn't really that functional since it's just PLA plastic, but I wanted to see what the ergonomics and the feel of the extension would be like, especially while using the carabiner (which I use a lot of the time). The hammer head is held in with a M2 threaded insert and a couple of M2 stainless bolts.

Why yellow? It's what I had loaded in my machine at the moment...was working on some other very interesting parts.

Interesting work, I love looking at modded tools and the thinking behind getting a tool suited to personal needs

Hmmm, one of my planned mods is to replace the carbon fibre bit storage area of my CX with aluminium (I think it will look better against the black - stainless steel would look even better as it would match the blade), but with a larger cutout to hold two bits (I reckon they will just squeeze in) or one long one.

I tried. It’s JUST too small to fit two bits in.

Would a hammer ‘bit’ for the Skeletool work? Or is that a terrible idea?

You tell me. The steel version has been working great for the past few weeks.

The utility knife is a brilliant idea, which surely appeals to office people. After experiencing people's reaction when I pulled a ZT 350 to cut some cardboard instead of using a box cutter, knife fear in the office is a real thing.

What do you think about X-Acto type of blades instead of broader utility blade?

I certainly like xacto blades but they are a little fragile at the tip. These blades are only 30mm long so they are about the same size but they are a lot strong at the tip and cutting edge. I like scalpel blades for the ease of installation, but they are also very delicate.
