Leatherman juice meets cranberry tin, then meets angle grinder

Hi,

Happy New Year.

I just bought a Leatherman Juice S2.  Nice little light duty plier.  However I was a little dissapointed with the can/bottle opener while attempting to open a can of cranberries for Christmas Dinner.  All I needed to do was puncture a hole in the other end which had been opened with an electric unit so as to be able to release the berries so they would come out of the tin.
To make a short story long we bent the opener and rendered it crooked so it wouldn't fit back into the multi plier as before.   I did try to straighten it and re-align but it wasn't to work.  It stuck out and was uncomfortable on the hand so I removed it with my angle grinder ::)
Anyhow, love the tool but was surprised that it wouldn't handle this average grade of tin.  Love this forum/site btw.

Sincerely,
Sean

Howdy! Yeah, the can/bottle opener is the Juice line's worst feature IMO. Not sharp at all and it's fairly easy to twist it. :-\ I prefer the model without the openers. :)

I'd say send it back to LM for a tune up, but I'm not sure what they'd think about the "mod". Couldn't hurt to explain the situation in an e-mail and find out. Out of  curriostity, did you just grind the whole thing off, or part of it?

Is so strange that happened to your Juice, I have the same S2 and the can/bottle opener was the first thing I used although I did open a can only with this tool and worked so smoothly that I liked the same if not better than the can opener in my SAK. So far two cans...hope it doesn´t break on the third...

I hashed over it for a bit wondering if I could just modify it a bit and keep the opener intact.  But the end of it was really poking up above the top of the tool which makes it uncomfortable to grip the unit.  So, I took the whole thing off.  Well at least the scissors are really easy to deploy now.  Before you had to pull out the opener before you could extract the scissors.  I'll just make a note to buy twist-top soda's from now on  ;)

Hey, glad it works so well for you. :) Maybe I'm doing it wrong? Wouldn't be the first time. :P

Actually, I wouldn't mind that set up. I hardly ever use the opener, but scissors get used often. :tu:

You guys are probably way ahead of me in machine/tool modification but after grinding the hard tool steel nub off and approached the tool handles it very quickly reminded me how soft aircraft aluminum really is. :o  be careful grinding around those handles if you opt for that mod!

I have to say the Juice was once a favourite but it's now a drawer queen due to it's lightweightness and a feeling like it's going to break somewhere  :(

(Yes I know 'lightweightness' isn't a proper word  ;))

I must admit that the opener on the S2 seems a bit daft. I can understand it's usefulness on the models with the corkscrew (e.g. the C2), as it is an assist to the corkscrew and clearly, that might justify the compromise on the can opener.

But on the S2? Obviously it's more cost effective to use the same tool on the S2, but it does seem a bit out of place there. Well, not on yours anymore I suppose Sean  :P
I used to come here a lot.
