Which Leatherman is best for modifying?
on: March 16, 2020, 07:53:13 AM
As the topic title says Which LM is best from the modders POV?
I am leaning towards buying either Wave or Surge, coz they seem like the MTs that have what I will be using most in my work as electrical engineer.
But both of them have some stuff that I would like to change, so I was thinking more experienced people on this forum could help me decide and share their story of modding these tools.
Thank you!

In terms of tool interchangeability and availability I would say the Rebar/Wave/Charge tools, but really it depends on what you want to end up with. Do you know what tools you would like, and what size of multitool you're comfortable using?  Do you have any local restrictions on locking blades, and do you want locking tools?

Welcome to the forum.  As far as modding, I think H said it best.  Look at your end product and work towards it.  The Wave is wonderfully modable.

The best mods I've seen here (in my opinion) are the Rebar ones.

Most of them are very cleanly done, and I'm surprised how some manage to add stuff without having to change much of the original tools inside it seems.

I took a look at Rebar, and it doesn't have outside tools, which is a no-no for me right away. My colleague has a Wave, I had a look on it, and it seems to be the right tool, with good sizes and weight, compared to Surge. But I really like outside scissors and T-shank adapter of Surge.
So, here is what I am  planning to do with my Wave:
1. Change serrated blade for the one from Charge with gut hook
2. Change the bit holder for precision bit for T-shank adapter(has anyone done this? Anyone makes them?)
3. Change outside file for scissors from Surge (is it even possible?)

Also, in the later plans to change main blade for for better steel - there is a S30v from charge and damascus steel version, has anyone done any comparison between these?
