Don't know about Styx but so far the info we have is we got hit by the first one of 5.5 at about 6:30am, and another one of 5 Richter at 7am. No casualties luckily, but one girl is in critical condition cause something collapsed on her. One of the towers of the Zagreb cathedral broke off, one church, a few old buildings lost their chimneys and there are cracks in houses and buildings, but luckily, we got if good, considering. I live about 100km from there and we all got woken up by the schockwave, my whole house was trembling.
Glad to hear that you're alright enki and styx. Do you think the type of buildings in the city made the damage worse? that broken cathedral spire looks scary.
it is more connected to construction methods and poor maintenance. most buildings that have been built after 1965 have received only minor damage in comparison. and just to clarify, i mean apartment buildings, skyscrapers and the like. actual houses are a different story as they are being built with a variety of materials and methods even today.the building where my mother lives was built in 1964 i believe and only the plaster has fallen in a few spots. and that is from a time period of massive construction when a lot of materials were stolen so a lot of the walls were cheaply made. most of her neighbors do have more damage, but that is due to them putting heavy objects directly on the walls like TVs and often cutting out portions or entirely removing load bearing walls (yes, for some reason that is legal with proper paperwork which in turn is rather easy to come by with one or two bribes).the other part is that the centre of the city is often being "maintained" but that is again being done haphazardly and more to fill someone's pockets than to actually make sure that those buildings are really safe. actually, I've been talking with a few people recently how one building has scaffolding on it for just such repairs. the peculiar thing is that the scaffolding is there for the past 7 or so years. and since I pass it almost daily, I never saw one worker there
Honestly, I think in this case the Covid-19 virus saved more people than a lot of people realize. It's time before easter, and it was sunday morning. The churches would have been full for the early morning mass as is traditional here. And the death toll would have been hundreds. :/
Don't forget that the big one was at 6:24 in the morning. Not sure how many have a mass at that time. Another this is that I have no clue if the later ones around 7 and about 20 to 8 caused so much damage as well
It is going to be a worldwide setback, but if anything, at least there is a little silver lining in that.
