First time sending SAK in for repair...
on: April 07, 2020, 06:43:57 AM
I recently bought a Danish Bantam, used. I bought it as a user as the scales show some wear.

But I noticed right off it has a bent combo tool.

Also, the scales also seemed a bit loose. So I sent it out this morning, to see if they can fix it. I let them know it is sentimental so they don’t just replace entire tool.

They should have it Wednesday. Hope to get it back quickly!!!

Do you want the sad news now or do you want to wait for your phone call from Connecticut?

Go ahead...

Replacing the bent tool shouldn’t be a problem as the Bantam is still produced.

I thought they only did those repairs in Switzerland?
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I believe so. The local dealerships send the SAKs to Switzerland for repair, in batches, several times a year.

Yes. Just verified that. Oh well. They can send it back to me then. I’ll have someone fix it for me. Just have to source the 84mm combo tool.

A pair of small adjustable spanners (wrenches) or needle nose locking pliers will get it straightened easily. I've done it to the technician's screwdriver and small blade. Use one spanner or plier to hold the tang, the other to twist. Be patient, work slowly.

Lightly peening the pins will tighten the scales. Tiny little taps until things are just tight enough.

Very nice pouch btw!

Would second sauls wise words above re fixing  it yourself . Slow and steady wins the race when bending/ peening. It is a lovely pouch too :gimme: :like:

For what it’s worth, I haven’t gotten any calls from Victorinox, but the website shows “repair in process”. Maybe that’s a good sign??

Just checked again a few minutes ago and it’s status has now changed to “Shipped” so I’m assuming it’s on its way back to me.

We’ll see what they did once it arrives. Even if they just tweaked the combo tool and tightened the rivets, I’ll be happy!

I’m sure it’ll have a shiny new combo tool and be peened just right.  :tu:

Well, got the Danish Bantam back. Kinda disappointed.  It appears they tried to straighten the combo tool. I mean, it’s better than it was. Definitely usable.

I can’t tell if they fixed the peening of the rivets. They might not have been bad. Maybe the Bantam is just so thin I feel flex from the tools flexing as well. Not really sure.  I can see the scales flex when I push hard.

I think I might look for a new alox Bantam, just to see how it “feels” compared to this one.

In any case, it’s back. Time to carry it and put it to use.

That sounds like an uncharacteristically poor show from Vic, sorry to hear it. The rivets will surely be loose If there's play in the tool pivots.

I can’t tell if it’s play in the rivets or I’m feeling the blade and scales bending.
