The Comprehensive Knife Based Multitool Thread
on: April 01, 2020, 05:33:39 PM
Sometimes you need more blade.

I generally don't, since I started carrying a multitool of some type or another for nearly two decades.  I used to carry a folder and left the Leatherman and the Victorinox at home or in my pack most of the time back then. One day I flipped it back to front and that was the end of the folding knife.  I could do a lot of things with the various implements on the MT, even subbing in the serrated blade for tearing through rope and fabric - ultimately the plain edges of my MTs were relegated to food prep.

My requirements and habits led me away from carrying a plier based multitool, and I have been carrying a SAK for many years.  A small slipjoint blade is all I need 99% of the time.

But sometimes it's not.  Sometimes I dig out an old part-serrated locking folder to get through packing material.  Sometimes I go into the camp pack for the 5 inch lockback,  Sometimes I use the large blade on the Vic OHT.  Sometimes I wonder if I will get a Gerber Armbar.  Sometimes I like to read reviews on the Leatherman T4.  Maybe I'll get one of those too.

This thread is for pictures, reviews, and all sorts of back-and-forth about knife-forward multitools.  Whether it's a locking blade, a one-hand opening mechanism, or if it's the size that counts - this thread is for tools of all brands and purposes.

Don‘t get an Armbar. At least not yet, you won‘t be happy. Wait for version 2.0. I hope they make one. The idea is great, the execution not so much  :dunno:

While not a big fan of locking blades, I still like the Buck X-Tract Fin. For a handle that still feels like a knife, you get a great pair of paper scissors, and a couple of screwdrivers. It rides well in the pocket, is comfortable to use, and has a very versatile blade shape.

No pics, mine's stashed away in a box at the moment.

Those look nice - I had wanted one when they were in production, years ago.  But I couldn't justify the price at that time.  For I while there, I was a Buck brand fan - the 110, 503, Tac-lite (same blade shape as the X-tract).  I still have a something-lite in the bottom of my backpack... for, you know... just in case.

Any Leatherman K4, K2, K2x, K4x series vs 111 / 130 SAKs (e.g Trekker, Soldier, Ranger) comparisons?

And anyone that would have bought the Kx series instead?

It would be nice if there were more options for knife-based multitools. The Leatherman K-series are exciting, but it needs better materials and blade shape (or at least options). At any rate, I would still like to get my hands on one. I wish Leatherman would offer a redesigned Skeletool, that has the same overall length as the existing tool, but with a blade that could fit the whole length of the tool. I would bet a  3.2" blade could ride a chassis that length.

A K2X with a saw would be nice

What other brand / options besides the SAK trekker are there?

There are a few discontinued or lesser-known branded ones that you can see in the pictures on my post.  The discontinued ones I know of are by Emerson and Buck.

Spyderco still makes the ClipiTool.

Theres the SAK Rangergrip.

A few Gerber models that are knife-forward.  Theres the Armbar, the Crucial, and the Curve

This is an Emerson.
It is a pretty simple tool but also amazingly solid and tough!

It's well known that a Vic Outrider is the only knife based multitool anyone ever need, but that's not why I'm here - I had no idea that Spyderco had ventured into the realm....

What, pray tell, is the model of that item? Is it still in production?

Yeah I snagged mine cheap on Craigslist actually too as it was seriously underappreciated by the guy I got it from? :woohoo:

I really like it though,it does not try to do anything except the simple functions it was designed with which is sort of refreshing really!

Buck Xtract 732 on top, Leatherman Crater C33BX on bottom.
Both discontinued now, although some of the Leatherman Crater series are still in production.
Both have good ergonomics, especially the blades.

Here is a selection of my knife-based plier tools.

If there are any you all want some details on please lmk and I’ll take a few pics and describe them.

My favorites for actual use are the modified CRKT bivy and the outu with the switchblade pliers (right above the red minigrip). Well, and the tire repair tool in the upper right hand corner. Definitely not an edc but supremely useful when needed.

Charles.

The bottom of the pic is a Wenger Swiss Grip. Based on the 120mm knife.

The closest thing available currently is the Rangergrip 74 or something in that line.

Right. But the ranger grip is retractable, small light duty pliers that barely open at all. The Swiss grip has big heavy duty fixed pliers that are very robust and strong. Completely different uses.

Oh. Nice. I didn't know that the Swiss Grip was fixed
