Just a rant...!! >:(
on: April 06, 2020, 12:05:39 PM
Probably will upset some folks with this thread, but then again i'm not really the kind of guy that give a cr*p of consideration to that when speaking my mind... and i got "upseted" in the first place so....

Reading a recent (very wisely) locked thread here in the Break Room, i sometimes wonder if i'm really on the right forum...    I mean this is a MultiTool forum, right...??

I also have my views on the subject of that topic, and they are very different (quite the opposite really) to some of the posters (OP included), but i'm sensible enough not to participate or try and "influence" my opinions upon others, furthermore not judging other folks views when i'm not in that society, culture, or country.

I really come here to talk about tools and especially SAK's, and have a good time talking about constructive things, so those kind of "discussions" sometimes makes me want to stay out of here...  >:(

I just think there is way too many violence and death in the world right now, to come in here and read more discussions about the "tools" for it.

/End of rant...

So flame away if you want to, lock the thread if you want too.
Just had to get that of my chest guys....  sorry to anyone...

Regarding that particular topic I agree with you Mac. But, it's amazing how few threads are locked in this haven, and testament to the friendship we all exhibit and the tolerance of other's views.

That particular topic is as far as I know, the only one that generates any ill will. I don't think there will be any consensus on the topic so I, like you, stay clear of it.   :tu:

Agreed.

There are places enough on the world wide web to discuss the topic. This part of it is dedicated to a different niche and we should hold true to that.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again...

There's four topics that are always guaranteed to get members falling out here

1) Politics
2) Religion
3) Firearms
4) Swiza

Any topic involving any of those, typically goes arse upwards somewhere along the line

The easy solution is to not read or reply to the threads in question. This is the  break room and it covers a wide variety of topics other than Multitools, firearms included.

If I would have to choose between "agree" or "disagree", I would have to agree, but ...

I do believe there's a bit more to it.  In my opinion it all comes down to a huge cultural difference between Europe and the U.S.  Over here we are brought up with the believe that a society is endangered by private gun-ownership, while in the U.S. people are brought up believing a society is endangered when people don't have the right/freedom to own firearms (correct me if I'm wrong guys, this is just how I see it with the information I have at my disposal, but obviously, I didn't grow up in the U.S.).

But I do believe that both are right, and both are wrong ...

There has to be a golden mean between the two.  I assume I would be a gun-owner if I lived in the U.S., I've always been interested in guns, I like the mechanical* (no, not that one  :twak:) part of a gun, and I loved doing practice shooting with pellet guns when I was a teenager, and I honestly do not see why I shouldn't be allowed to step it up a notch and own a "real" firearm.  I'm 42 years old, never had a run-in with the law (not even a speeding ticket), have a wife and three kids, and in 9 years or so I will have paid off the mortgage on my home.  But when I see what hoops i have to jump through to acquire the right to own a gun (and even then, the choices are very limited), I gues I'll just keep doing target practice with a pellet gun (and even that is frowned upon by a lot of people over here).

On the other hand, being able to buy a firearm before you are allowed to buy a beer does not seem right either...

Like I said, a golden mean.

It's one of those things that should just be seen as a culturale difference, with no right or wrong.  I can see why some of the U.S. members consider their handgun just a part of their EDC setup, but they should also understand why most Europeans will never see it that way.  But if there's one thing we at MTO do better than any other internet community, it's respecting each others culture.  Be it political opinions, faith, sexual orientation/preference (I guess, since I can't think of a topic about this last one), we don't care, we're all just knife (and other gear) freaks enthusiasts.

@AimlessWanderer:  Don't get me started on the tick-removal tool on the Swiza, I really like the fact that Swiza at least has the b*lls to try and put a new type of tool on their knives, but turns out I'm a dirty, dirty boy when I like a tick-removal tool even if it's that close to the knifeblade...**

I live in Canada. I own many firearms. We are not allowed to EDC them up here, and I am much grateful for that. I recalled a visit years ago to the US and I saw several guys walking around with handguns on them. I immediately felt uncomfortable as I couldn't help but feel unprotected. It sure didn't make me feel safe knowing there were strangers wearing firearms not far from me. It left and indelible impression.

Now there are some States that are just as strict as Canada when it comes to firearms. California and New York come to mind to be fair.

You are correct, it is definitely a cultural thing. With that said, event though I may disagree with certain threads, I live in a free society as most of us do. I have the power to read or not read a thread despite agreeing or disagreeing with it. I ultimately have the power of choice. I can move along and not get upset about some postings. I dare say, I encourage a breath of topics as I sometimes learn something new from them as opposed to just narrowing our topics to just multi-tools.

That is my opinion...for what it is worth.

This is not your sandbox, its ours.  When we come into this sandbox come with open hearts, and minds.  Come with kindness, and humility.  Come with a desire of friendship, and respectfulness.  Come with compassion, and the want of learning.  Come to communicate and to listen.  Come with patience, and come with civility.

Every now and again we will become upset.  Talking thru these moments helps us grow as members and hopefully as individuals.  There are a variety of topics that may not be your cup of tea and there are certainly many opinions that will rub us the wrong way.  Take nothing personal.  Step away when you are getting heated to the point of retaliatory actions.  Be assured the Moderators are doing their jobs.

I don't mind discussions about weapons as I am quite interested in them. I am glad that I don't live in a country where everyone and their dog can carry one around. I like that in my country you can buy one and shoot it on a shooting range in a sport kind of a deal. I don't like wars. I don't know where I am going with this...  :D

I agree with the OP, which is why I did not read that particular post in the first place. I know I couldn‘t keep my cool, so I steered clear of it. The good thing is, controversial topics like that don‘t come up here very often, and I am happy that political/religious/etc posts are forbidden in this forum.
If you only want to talk about tools, just don‘t visit the break room. There are other sub forums i don‘t frequent because i am not interested in them. And that is perfectly okay in my mind

I still believe that, as with all multitools, it's better to have a tick tool in your pocket knife than no tick tool at all when you need it.  And during a hike, removing a tick should be higher on your priority list than peeling your apple.  But we've had this conversation before, right  ;)

To be clear, I still don't own a Swiza...

I do like that there's another Swiss company making pocketknives beside Victorinox, I just wish they would be more Wenger and less Swiza...

That and the fact that the prices on them are just insane.

Anyway, what were we talking about here... Ah yes, pizza with pineapple...

The difficulty is that, when it comes to firearms, yes, they are a tool, and, when treated that way, we can all have a healthy respect and discussion on them.

Unfortunately, they are also almost a religion to some- I know, they are not worshiped or anything weird like that, but when it comes to the "cold dead hands' type mentality they go beyond the concept of just a tool, and that means that they can no longer be discussed objectively.  Ditto for the folks that are very much against them, to whom firearms are also very much a religion.

That inability to discuss things objectively is why political and religious discussions are banned here.

I'm not suggesting that we ban firearms discussions here, because I frankly enjoy firearms myself, and I would personally hate the idea of not being able to discuss a legitimate tool here on my own forum.

That having been said, no one here on the forum wants, or could try to take your guns away, so there is no need for anyone to get defensive, especially where a difference of opinion is concerned.

I constantly flip flop in my mind when it comes to carrying a firearm.  On the one had, I know that I am responsible and trained well enough (and that training, or lack thereof IMHO is the difference that makes people look down on firearms owners and enthusiasts) to carry a firearm in public if I damn well please.  However, I doubt that I would, simply because I don't feel that need.  I wish, however this choice was mine, and not my government's.

The flip side of this is that I see how all of the people around me, who supposedly have training and are licensed drive cars, and that, if nothing else, scares the living bejeezus out of me if firearms were more readily available.   :ahhh

I know for a fact that I can put an AR-15 in the hands of my father, with the nuclear launch codes inscribed on the side, and send him into a crowded mall and no one is in any more danger than they were an hour before.  My current crop of tenants though, I don't trust those idiots with a handful of wet macaroni and a half eaten candy bar.

So, like them or not, just be respectful to other members, regardless of which side of the discussion that you fall on, and everyone is all good.  Lose sight of that, and, well, smurf is going to get dealt with.

It seems that the trouble with any thread that goes off the rails with hostility is that people find it somehow important to be agreed with rather than just heard. :twak:

I try my best to post reflecting on my own personal experience and as such that is not really debatable,it is mine and is what it is.

The minute I try to suggest that my way is "The Way" is the minute I stick my toe in to see if the water is hot or not.

Talking about anything here that we might use or see as a tool is pretty safe as long as my thoughts about my experience stays as clearly just the way that I think about it and we are each fully entitled to feel any way that we do but have little right to impose that on anyone else.

After I make this turn and break trust with that idea, the conversation always turns nasty and personal and everyone has to step in to defend their own attitude and point of view.

The thing is that My Point of View is mine.

As long as we can all can keep it that way things usually progress just fine.

I had a Logic professor in college that I learned this simple thing from.

He was an older Italian guy and always argued that it was so simple "it is all in your point of view".

I fully realize that not everyone sees things the way that I do,it can be tough to remember this at times.

In my town we have one pizza place where you are given a check list with ingredients and you decide what you want on your pie (You also choose regular or wholemeal pie). I normally chose oregano, smoked chicken, penny bun mushrooms, smoked cheese, zucchini, dried tomatoes and wholemeal pie (cheese and tomato sauce included). And two beers from a local brewery. Now that is good pizza!  :like:
