Lovely 110s TG  :tu:

Thanks Mac.

This is a comparison of the Buck 2 dot 110 with the Federal 110,which was the size of the original 110 Hunter from 1963.

Oh, it was smaller?
Do you know the story behind that?

The original was smaller in every way compared to the next generation and the current generation as well.

I have some pictures that shows the difference and I'll get them up ASAP.

This is a picture illustrating the difference in the width of the body,as well as the difference in the width of the blade.

The Federal was a reproduction of the original 110 Folding Hunter. They had to makes these Federal knives by hand because the old machinery that was used to create them had been discarded many years ago.

I have to assume that Buck believed that their new knife needed to be "beefed-up", so they introduced a newer more robust model. This model has persisted until today with a more rounded body and a different steel.

Thanks TG  :hatsoff:
I can see in your pics that it's been "beefed-up" alright.
It didn't hurt doing that. In fact, I think it contributed to it's unique charm  :D

The next generation of 110 Hunters are some beefy knives.

I found another iteration of the Federal on Buck's website several years ago.Buck didn't  advertise this knife as a Federal but when I saw it I knew what it was.I called Buck immediately to confirm my suspicions but the person answering the phone had no idea what I was talking about.I then asked to speak to a technical advisor and he claimed the same ignorance.I ordered it in spite of having no official confirmation from Buck as to the exact model which was listed as a "web special".When it arrived it confirmed my suspicion. It was indeed a Federal and at cost less than the "limited edition" Federal.

Here is the "web special" Federal setting below the "limited edition" Federal.

This is a Buck 110 made for Matco Tools and their Dean Scuza driven drag car.

It has a nickel silver frame with gold inlayed into the engraving .
:like:
There’s a online store over here that has one of these and a limited edition 1/1500 with the car inlayed into the scale. Saw them recently when looking for a new 110.
I think the original size would be good for them to bring back as a regular product option.

Nice!

I’ve been eyeing that one, as well as the 110 Slim Pro TRX.  But being more of a user than a collector of 110s, and already owning a 110 Pro and 110 Slim Pro, I’m having a tough time justifying purchasing either (especially given the significant price increases).

But 'am not a fan of the thumb studs.
Are they removeable?
And if they are, would there be a whole then?

I wish I could answer your question Mac.I really don't know if they're readily removable but I do know almost any addition to a knife is removable.

There is no attachment from one stud to the other,so I assume there would be residual hole if the studs were removed.

I hear you about the thumb-stud,My personal opinion about studs on Buck knives is one of ambivalence.Since I have so many other Bucks without studs, then these are OK with me and they do work well.

It looks like they are pressed on, with a shaft between them.

So, not going to be as easy as if they were screwed on/together, but they should be removable with the proper application of force (although one reviewer on the Buck website complains that he tried and failed to remove them).

Should also be possible to drill out or grind off, if one didn’t care about saving the studs and wasn’t too worried about marking the blade.

Regardless of the method used, it seems there would be a small hole left in the blade if the thumb studs were removed.

Picked up the 110 Hunter Sport.  Here it is with the 110 Pro and 110 Slim Pro.

Overall, I give the concept an “A”, and the execution a “B”.

I really like the concept of a 110 that is lighter-weight but still hand-filling.  I strongly approve of the choice to use S30V instead of 420HC, and OHO is a nice touch IMO.

I think the choice of smooth OD green micarta is less than ideal though.  I would have preferred G10 with just a little texture, like the Pro or Slim Pro.  And how about giving us a color that would stand out if we drop it in the woods, like blaze orange, bright red, or neon blue?  Instead, we get a knife that is basically camouflaged.

The pocket clip is a nice addition.  It is definitely a step up over the Slim Pro pocket clip, but there is room for further improvement.  It does let the knife ride nice and deep in the pocket, as shown below.  And, if pocket clips aren’t your thing, it is easily removable.  Some reviewers have complained that, when the pocket clip is removed and the screws replaced, the screws don’t sit flush with the bolster.  This seems a little nitpicking to me, but also a criticism that could have easily been avoided by Buck.

I’m planning to give this knife some carry time, so we’ll see how it does.

Nice.

I think the Slim series are a bit under-appreciated.  3 3/4” blade in a usable package that only weighs about 3 ounces is no mean feat.

I also really like that they offer both budget models at very reasonable prices and higher end models with upgraded materials.  I wish more knife companies would do this, and that Buck would do this with more models.  A 301 Stockman with S30V steel, G10, and NS pins and bolsters would be great.

I have a 110 Slim Pro that I carried quite a bit, though it has been recently replaced in the rotation by the 110 Hunter Sport.

Great color choice with the orange as well!

:iagree: I have a Buck 112 in orange GFN. For less than $30, I feel it's an incredible value. I'll post some pictures of it herein when I get a chance.

I have lived almost 53 years without ever having a desire to own a Buck 110 or 112. I read 2 threads on this forum in the past 2 days, and I start thinking "How have I managed to go so long without a Buck?".
