I finally got one. I think it’s awesome. Feels great in hand, just like the Pioneer X. Can’t carry it until I get time to put a proper 15° edge on it, though. That factory edge whittling, compared to a proper one - night and day. Just a couple days until a day off, then I’ll sharpen it up, and my new Executive 81.

I’ve been holding off on knife purchases for a bit, so I’ve yet to board the Farmer X train...

Anyways, yesterday I stumbled across a new silver Farmer X on Ebay for a hair over US $50 shipped, and in my side of the world! That is almost 50% less than normal retail around here... I’ll have to wait and see if it is the real deal, and hope to post some evidence in a few days.

I was doing some yardwork. First up was taking a gigantic dead shrub out of the ground. Now, the easiest way to do it would have been to use my cordless sawzall, but it was going to be a looooooooooong wait to get blades. So I shrugged, and very carefully used a skill saw instead. Once done with the saw, I had a few small branches left, so the Farmer X sawed through them enough for me to twist them off. It was faster than digging out some shears or my aircraft snips or something.

I did the rest with a shovel, because shovels are great.

Later, I had two attached sections of portable chainlink fencing to move, but first I had to cut a bunch of viney weeds (weedy vines?) that had grown through it over the last few years. Some parts needed cutting, and the rest needed yanking. This process was really easy. Too bad the Fx couldn't carry the fencing for me, too.

I'll have to try the 15 deg edge. Have never really looked into edge profiles.

As an aside, how do you like your Executive 81? Thinking of getting one to have another Wenger model in the lineup. I'm curious about the main blade shape vs the 58mm line.

If you think the factory edge is sharp, just thin it out a bit. Huge difference in cutting, especially wood. I detest thick, 20° or so edges.

The Executive 81 is a perfect size. The blade’s not much different at all. Just a bit. I whittled with it today. Fun stuff. Here’s a pic of the Classic, Ex. 81, and Ex.

I'll have to give that a try!

It looks like the Executive 81 has a taller blade, but what I wonder is if it's thicker.

I just got the Executive (74mm) and the small blade on it is a little thicker and taller (and even slightly shorter) than the Classic 58mm blade.... and it makes a big difference! I might have to try the Executive 81... it's simply inevitable.

Farmer X cut an extra band into an extender for my running watch for ankle use at work. I know it's silly, but it works fine.

Can you give us a close up on how it looks?

I filed up my PX, but didn't want to get too close to the springs or the scales so i wouldn't nick them. It turned out good enough....

this is the best pic I could get at the moment. I just use a small file for finishing after I remove the bulk of it with a dremel. I lay it flat and follow the radius of the end of the knife and keep going until I start hitting the back springs and liners. At this point there will be minor scratches that can be cleaned up with fine sandpaper, but  I just leave it since it matches up with the wear it already has from riding in pocket.

Thanks  :D

It looks really nice  :like:

On mine i just snip what i could with cutters, filed it down as far as i dare to go, then buffed it up with several grit abrasives, namely those 6 in 1 grit nail files/padded polishers the girls use. They are great for those tasks. It's what i use to polish and do fret work on my guitars too  :D

Ha, I build cigar box guitars and have done the same with those. The foam padding makes them great for conforming to the radius of the frets. Ive even used them for polishing the edges of convex knives.

Ok, I should be joining this club but having to wait to Xmas to be official :(
Anyway I was wondering if anyone would know of a good sheath for one? Of course nothing like a Zermatt Medium which should fit, but what about a folding pancake style? Any ideas that are not more then the knife? Something not too snug yet not where the knifes going to rattle around loose? Guess I’ll have some time to look around since it’s not even November,,

That depends on how much extra length there is in the sheath. The Fx is only 2mm longer than cellidor models, and is the same width as the Super Tinker.

(This is less an answer than it is a small info dump. Sorry.)

No biggie I know it’s the same size as a lot other sak just that 2mm longer which in the leather department really isn’t going to matter!

Your question is the reason I finally thought to check its size compared to the Super Tinker. I sometimes forget the Climber's corkscrew adds a millimetre.

Thanks Altis, agreed, be nice to see Vic do them rather than third parties like this one. Maybe annual limited editions along with classic, cadet and pioneer, unlikely I suspect after PX winter magic but you never know :dunno:

My new DVD shelves are too deep. I wanted to put something in behind the DVDs to push them forwards about 10 cm; 30" 2x4s are close enough. Go saw, go!

Okay, so I cut exactly one piece with the Fx (the extra 6" at the end of an 8' board), then used the skill saw outside for the rest. It was fun anyway.

Anyway, now that that post is done, I don't want to bury JR's request for sheath information. Here's his post in quote form:
