30 Day Off-Brand Challenge
« on: May 30, 2020, 07:02:44 AM »
I'll do a month with the Roxon Storm. I've been meaning to do it for a long time, but never got around to it. Well, that'll change in June.
I thought it would be easier for me to do and for others to follow if I start it on the 1st.
Kinda last minute announcing it, sorry. If anyone wants to jump in that would be awesome! :pok:

This is the original. Roxon Storm Review

They've since updated it quite a lot, which is fantastic.

Updates:
-Blade steel was upgraded from 3cr13 to 5cr15Mov
-Blade increased from 1.8mm to 2.2mm thickness.
-Scissors steel was also upgraded from 3cr13 to 5cr15Mov
-Saw changed shape, and now has a liner-lock.
-Hook disgorger/pry thingy was replaced by a reamer.

-Can opener is at the proper position to hook onto can, and is sharpened.
-File is more aggressive.
-Glass-breaker has a tiny rubber cover.
-Pliers have Roxon logo.

-Sheath can now also be carried horizontally.
-Sheath now has a snap button.

Day 1

My NexTool Mini Flagship came! :mail:

Off-brand multi-tools with good can openers excite me.

Also replaced a suitcase handle that my movers had broken.
The screw holes lined up perfectly, but the new handle is a little shorter. But it works.

That opener leaves a weird edge. Fortunately, there is no governing body for can opener edge formatting.

Yes. The can opener's edge faces forwards, like a Victorinox quarter-circle, but it is easier to go backwards, like a Leatherman claw.
I covered it in my Can Opener Comparison thread.

Scissors!

I have a Rangergrip 71 Gardener. It has larger scissors than your Roxon, but they're actually terrible for precision work (I guess they're meant to be garden shears.)

How are those Roxon ones for finer work? They look like a very usable size to me.

I've had no issues with the scissors, no matter the task.  What sort of precision work did the RangerGrip fail?

Fingernails. They are garbage for fingernails.

I've always used clippers, but I'll use the tool's scissors and let you know. My fingernails are quite short now, give me a couple of days.

Fair. I am aware that most people use clippers, so I probably shouldn't use that as a benchmark for most multitool scissors.

Day 3

I was tired of having the powerboard on the floor so I mounted it on the side of my desk.

Nice of somebody to paint a sign for your tool like that!

On topic for real, though, I guess the screwdriver gets the job done!

Edited to add more exclamation points!

Isn‘t that to be expected? I mean the SAK is called „Gardener“ and the scissors are related to the size of kitchen scissors. No one would use those for fingernails (I hope).

Day 4

I also shortened a pen. Great saw and file.
Why do they not sell mini Bic pens?

Good job shortening that pen without cracking the plastic. That tells us something about the saw — if you tried to do that with a factory-dulled, non-crosscut saw like on most cheap multitools, you might have had a lot more trouble there. It also says something about your patience, because I happen to know if you try to rush that job your pen wont have a great time.

Because of the time zone difference (we must live about 14,000 km apart), I've been staying up late to catch these posts. Worth it.

The saw did a nice little job. They changed it from the original Storm, which was already a fine saw.

I appreciate the support.  :salute:

A little earlier than usual.
It is easier for me to post everything in the afternoon, but I'll try and do it a little earlier.

Also, I realized how dangerous the glass breaker is. Have you ever dropped your multi-tool on tiled floor? Well, if you happen to drop this one, and it lands with the glass breaker point-first, you'll ruin your evening and wish you were carrying something else. I did not drop it, just a thought.

I also tried to clip my fingernails with this.
It did the job, but I do not know if I'd call it a success.

The scissors on this are massive. The tool is heavy. It is awkward to do a delicate task like that with this. Maneuverability takes a big hit. You simply do not have the control you'd have with a small pair of dedicated, manual scissors, or even small sak scissors.

And as for the cutting, again, you'll vogue like never before trying to get one hand in the perfect position and then the scissors at the correct angle to clip the fingernail. And the bevel angles are not helping either. The scissor blades are thicker than, say, a 91mm sak, and the bevel angle is more obtuse. You will not get that graceful single cut for one fingernail, and leave a perfect curve behind. I eventually had to clip shavings at a time with every cut, to get the fingernail presentable.

And of course, things get even worse when using it with the left hand to clip the fingernails of the right.

In conclusion, if you have been using scissors (or garden shears) for this job, then you will probably have little trouble using this tool. If, like me, you've never used scissors for this, and then try to use the Storm, then you'll have an interesting experience, like a fawn learning to walk. "And that, children, is how your grandpa snipped his thumb off."

A guy I know claims to have learned this with a glass coffee table.

Anyway, those scissors are (unsurprisingly) seeing a lot of use. I'm not surprised they're not nail-friendly, but they're sure getting the job done.

Oh, and post when it's most convenient. Those of us who live on the opposite side of the world should probably just read it in the morning anyway.
