Ben I kinda think Ryan wanted to know if the pliers would withstand the task- not a photo essay or anything!

Photo's would make the test far more interesting and far more valid than you just writing "I did it and they were fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" wouldn't it?
I'm back!!

I applaud everyone for showing restraint on the mighty Surge , although I am not sure about Ryan  :pok: :D.
I think Sean the crusher of Surge's is really " Bruce Banner" doing crazy scientific experiments in his shed.

Hello Sean, I think they are right that your LM SURGE is just a defect, actually have cut and bend that kind of wire.
Hope the warranty kicked in.
Multitools are the best thing that happened to mankind since the invention of the wheel!

I would honour this as a warranty issue, no problem.

Kwakster, have you seen many broken Surge/Core pliers like this in your repair shop?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

True, but all I'm saying is that we have plenty of people here that do have cameras so why don't they give it a go?

I'm sure DaveK would be up for it.

They are pretty nasty though, so it won't matter if it breaks anyway.  :D

For what it's worth, I've always been a little wary of the Surge pliers thickness (side-on). I think maybe they have too much length/width, so you can easily build up too much leverage on them?

My backyard guesses at physics aside, my Kick actually cuts hard steel wire better than my Surge!

Never.

Had one Charge Ti which had crushed handles (the steel parts of course), which was apparently done by a construction worker with a bear grip.
His colleague who brought me the tool said he used his bare hand, no pipes or the like.

Thanks for sharing the info about your Uncle!  Years back it used to be a primary mode of communication.  Now "I" enjoy Ham Radio by Morse Code.

Thanks again for the warm welcome all! This is a great site/forum.  Really enjoy perusing when not working or out doing other things.  I've always enjoyed carrying mult-tools over knives.  Have a good friend who buys and collects knives and is always eager to show off his latest.  Nice stuff but I still think for a good "all around carry" it's hard to beat a multi-tool but then, I don't have to convince anyone of that here do I? ;)

Heh.  I knew I could find the letter I wrote when my PST broke off part of the pliers:

Quote
July 29, 2003

Dear Sirs:
I have enclosed my Leatherman Tool for repair or replacement.  While working on my 1967 Land-Rover, I broke off one  of the tips of  the needlenose pliers’ jaws.  At the time, I was pulling a split pin so I could remove one of the shock absorbers.
This is the fourth time I have returned this particular tool (which I’ve owned for 9 years).   This is mentioned as a compliment, not a complaint.  I use my Leatherman tool almost exclusively even though I have received other multitools as gifts over the years.  These other multitools include the Kershaw tool with locking pliers, Gerber’s Multilocks with interchangeable pliers jaws and Schraeder’s tool with the full sized pliers.  I find my original Leatherman the best combination of size, tool selection and function.

Also returned for snapped off small screwdriver, broken off blade and twisted pliers. Never a problem with warranty repairs.  :tu:  :salute:
