Survival kit on yourself
on: January 06, 2009, 04:56:51 AM
I have been wondering if I could have a survival kit on me without actually carrying a kit per say

I have several things in my pockets and in my wallet

I have in my pockets or in a sheath a full sized MT, in pockets on keychain a Squirt S4 or a Micra and a 58mm SAK plus utili-key (if at work I have my Gerber EAB and another 91mm SAK), small medicine case with pain relievers, a small sewing kit of my own making :D and just regular odds and ends for the day

In my wallet I carry band-aids, money ::) , all my different cards, a paper clip, a splinter remover and a calendar

This is all I can think of right now sounds like a lot but I don't really notice carrying any of it

I am wondering what I could add to it without adding to much weight

I was thinking of a small flashlight (torch), a ferro rod (don't know how small they come though), a small thing of Duct tape and some q-tips dipped in vaseline in a small plastic bag (if I get a ferro rod)

any suggestions guys :D

A Bic (or even a mini Bic!) can be very valuable.  I've got some duct tape wrapped around mine, but you could also wrap some inner tube rubber around one since that stuff burns hot and fast, and can get wet and still burn.

I'm still really partial to my Zippo though; I've got some inner tube around that.

Carry a plastic whistle.  My wife and I carry whistles.

Whistles can be heard farther away than your voice and attract attention.

Things like whistles and ferro rods can easily be put on your keys, as can spy capsules full of cotton way and pain meds :)

Your wallet can be used for carrying a wire saw and condoms, + if you can find a robust one, a magnifying glass too :)

Definitely get a torch (flashlight) for your key-chain.  I'm not a fan of the photon type, I've had to many and they've all failed.  Go for a AAA powered LED, most brands do something in that range.  I do sometimes carry a ferro rod but to be honest 99% of the time you will get more use out of a mini bic lighter or a Zippo.  I also recommend getting a whistle, if you need to draw attention to yourself then it is invaluable.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Funny thing about a lighter I broke myself from carrying one when I quit smoking don't know if I want to start that old habit again who knows if I start that one what it might lead 2 ::) Sorta why I was wanting a ferro rod :D They all seem like good ideas though :tu: Now I need to start accumulating all sorts of this stuff :ahhh :D and get to loading my pockets up :D

You could always pick up a Ritter PSK. I've seen them at REI. Or make an altoid tin mini-kit that seemed to be the fad on BF's Wilderness forum a while back. I recall people adding fishing line and hook, mini bics, petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls, 58mms (or a small razor blade for the ultralight fanatic), signal mirrors, filed down Fox 40 whistles, a button compass, a wire saw, iodine tablets (water purification), and some basic first aid stuff into these kind of things.

And don't forget to add a "Ranger band" to wrap around it.  ;)

When mountaineering or ice climbing, what I carry as survival gear includes:
Lighter
Ferro rod/magnesium block combo
MT (currently a skeletool, previously Kershaw)
headlamp (rather than flashlight, cuz it frees up my hands)
Steripen (mine's big, but they make a pen version)for water purification
Emergency blanket
Assorted bandaids
Sport tape
Coupla sport gels
Compass

If I had the smaller steripen, all of it would fit in pockets, and belt sheaths without a problem.

Lighters are great, but sometimes (heavy rain, high wind) they don't really work.
Yea, you can boil water, but the steripen is 90 sec/liter

That's basically my kit.

What exactly are condoms used for in a survival situation? I've heard of the military using condoms for covering gun barrels and they are sometimes used in explosives.

A small (business card sized) Fresnel Lens is useful for fire starting and magnification. It rides unnoticed in your wallet.

Good kit building insights as well as a brilliant kit from a couple of ammo tubes and an Otterbox. A must read.

A Fenix lod-ce aaa light! I was yesterday evening in an emty house that was for sale and I turned on the fenix and everytime I do that I'm always surprised how much light comes out that little thing.  And it is very small it won't be noticed in your pocket.
And a ferro rod you are wondering? I don't know. If IRC there was tread about that somewhere and I thought the conclusion was in general, what do you need something like that for in day to day life. I would go with the earlier mentioned bic.

Well besides the firesteel I got this weekend I picked up a small knife sharpener ::) the DMT Dia-Sharp Diamond Sharpening Card in the extra fine grit

This thread came to mind when I saw this credit card sized sharpener :tu: I was amazed at how affective it was being so small. I took a fairly dull knife from a guy at work and got it to shaving sharp but not paper cutting sharp :) Which is almost always sharp enough to do day to day chores :tu:

Here's a pic of it

I have the green (extra fine) instead of the blue (course pictured)

This little beauty slips right in with my credit cards completely unnoticed :D

Standard 3-1/4" x 2" x .05"

Metric  83 mm x 51 mm x 1 mm

and it only cost about 8 bucks
