I should have put it in the post.  Unfortunately it is ivory, with what is known as a "reeded" pattern cut into it.  Depending taste and/or regiment ebony was also used.

Oh, ivory. I wouldn't have expected that on such an old British sword?   :salute:

It's not a subject I know a lot about but I wonder if it's a product of the whaling industry rather than elephant ivory?   I think I've got some research to do.  :D

I was looking up the 1786 regulations for the new sword and found some information out there that is wrong, on websites that are easy to find and are easy to read.  Understandably wrong perhaps...but still wrong.   :D

The confusion seems to stem from what constitutes a 1786 and a 1796 sword.  So here's my attempt to clear up the confusion.  When the British Army brought out the very first sword regulations (1786) they concentrated almost exclusively on the blade (1" at the shoulder, at least 32" long, straight and suitable for cut and thrust combat).  Easy enough so far.  So all four of the swords pictured below would be acceptable to the 1786 regs.

All was calm for ten years but then in 1796 they decided that they wanted a more uniform (and protective) hilt.  So the regulations for the blade remain unchanged but now all swords must have a double shell guard and knucklebow to protect the hand.  Folding shell or solid shell was entirely up to the officer who was buying the sword.  Still, I think, not too complicated.  So now two of the shown swords are acceptable to the new regs but two are not.

So what seems to confuse people is that ANY of these swords could have been made in and around 1786.  Both sets of regulations simply focused in on swords that were already around and popular, they didn't "design" anything new whatsoever.  I've also read, more than once, that the change from 1786 to 1796 was between solid and folding shell guard.  I don't entirely understand where this idea comes from but it is nonsense.

So, here it is; my oldest sword yet.  What we have is a sword dating from around 1650-1680.  Possibly that makes it English Civil War but more likely a little later.  Classically this hilt style is classified as a cavalry weapon, but the proportions on this particular example really scream foot soldier to me.  Blade is 795mm (31 1/4") and weight is a very handy 660g (1lb 7oz), POB is 120mm (4 3/4").  Shorter and lighter than most cavalry weapons.  In fact this is extremely similar in size and weight to the brass hilted spadroons I've talked about earlier.  I'm going to do a little more research and get back to you when I know more myself.  :D

We can see here that there is a section missing from this side of the hilt.  Can't be certain what it was but I can say it wasn't symmetrical with the remaining shell as the attachment points don't line up.

Wow, that's remarkably well preserved. There are lots of countries younger and in poorer condition.

 :hatsoff:

Maybe you can find a similar model in a museum, so as to discover what the original hilt looked like.
