EDC in DEC
on: October 05, 2020, 12:25:14 AM

This December we’re running an unconventional challenge: 30 days of EDC.

Your EDC.

This isn’t about what someone else thinks you should EDC….

This challenge is about what YOU actually EDC….or think you should EDC for December. It is loosely defined but requires some discipline and consistency.

Participate at your own risk!

Here are the rules:

• The challenge runs 01 December through 30 December.

• Identify your EDC items and post a photo of your EDC gear for the month on Day 1. These items shall be carried daily throughout the challenge.  (see exceptions below)

• Post a photo of your EDC or a component of the EDC that got used during the course of the day in the thread everyday.

• Additional items shall not be added nor shall initial items be deleted after the start of Day 1. You must carry awl the stuff you said you needed for the entire month (unless there are extenuating circumstances….). What you start with is what you have, nuthin' more.

• EDC items include, but are not limited to:

- Watch
- Wallet
- Cell phone
- Keys
- Knife
- Multitools w/ or w/o bit kits
- Lights
- Bandana/kerchief (can be rotated for laundering purposes)
- First Aid Kit
- Compass
- Lighters/matches
- Pens/Pencils
- Notebooks (outside official duty/work/school requirements)
- Tools (outside official duty/work/school requirements)
- Firearms (outside official duty/work/school requirements)

• Please specify awl of your EDC: tools, aids, apps, etc…. What will you be relying on for December?

• Awl components of the EDC shall be carried everyday. If some components can not be carried for a specific reason, e.g "Couldn't carry my pistol with me because I was on jury duty.", the participant shall state so in that day's post and provide a brief explanation.

• Additional tools are permitted for specific activities, e.g. "Used chainsaw to harvest firewood today.", but the EDC would still need to be carried in some manner (with safety in mind when using that chainsaw!  :ahhh).

• Items needed for work, school, or duty are NOT considered EDC.

• If you need/use an item or tool that is not part of your EDC, please state so and why the EDC gear didn’t “cut the mustard.”

• For purposes of the challenge “shall be carried” is interpreted to mean “shall be readily accessible” or “shall be close at hand.”

This challenge may seem easy or straightforward…and maybe it is. However, it is designed to push you as a participant to evaluate your EDC….or one of your EDC setups. Use the chance well!  :salute:

So, if I'm reading this right, we can carry our normal edc, no matter how many overlapping tools/items we may have?
SAK, multi-tool, key-chain tools, knife? :like:

I think that's the idea.

State your EDC...carry your EDC...don't go changing your EDC....do what you gotta do....let us know how that EDC worked out...and what you'll change.  :D

I also frequently change things up, just for the sake of change.  I think not rotating will be the challenge for me.

At least for the time being I think I found the items I like to have close by as my EDC. This should prove if my assumption is correct. I am in unless circumstances change.   :hatsoff:

A December challenge and possibly a badge, the shakes are subsiding!  :woohoo:

Due to the circumstances I have no where to go but the shop once a weak and a nightly walk, and the lockers usually stay in place for that

Though be warned Nix, I not only have a lot of gear, I also carry far too much of it at any given time

Nutnfancy on Youtube said you have to carry everything with you because it doesn't do you any good having an EDC bag with everything in it if it is left at home or back in the car.  He managed to pare everything down to what fits in a waist pouch.  The bare minimum.     I carry most days in a square briefcase.  That's pretty much a messenger bag with a more grown up veneer.  When on vacation (something we used to do before the "rona" children) or on weekends, I've carried in a more casual sling bag over one shoulder.  The key point being I've actually carried the same stuff every day and kept it on or about my person.  I don't agree 100% with Mr. NutnFancy and have no objections to leaving the bag inside the house when I'm outside in my own yard, or leaving it locked in the car if I'm close by but it's not convenient to carry the bag with me at the time.  The bag just augments everything in my pockets anyway, and what's in my pockets covers the basics.  What I want to know is if the requirements of the challenge will be to pretty much have physical contact with your bag, i.e., carry it with you at all times, or will proximity and good intentions be close enough?

I threw this rule in to stay practical and "real":

"For purposes of the challenge “shall be carried” is interpreted to mean “shall be readily accessible” or “shall be close at hand.” "

I think a bag or waist pack is a great idea if your EDC is bulky.  Depending on what I'm wearing, a waist pack or sling bag or brief case becomes my EDC bag. If I'm on a day hike, some of my EDC may be in my pockets, some in a backpack. Lately, my 'EDC' is just the stuff I keep in my pockets.

If your EDC requires a bag, e.g. because you can't find a good pocket clip for that crowbar, then the expectation is that the bag goes with you everywhere when journeying outside your dwelling. If you are in your yard cutting the grass...and the bag is in the kitchen...I personally would say that your bag is still "readily accessible" and "close at hand". If you are in the shower and your mobile phone is on your desk getting a recharge....I think that is still "readily accessible."  If you need an EDC item right now, you should be able to get it in hand within a minute or two. For me, a 1 mile run and 8-minute delay (hey, I ain't as fast as I used to be...) to get some gear means that I was not EDC'ing that gear.

However! In this challenge, your assessment of your EDC use is what counts, so my opinion isn't worth Gull guano and should be disregarded from the outset.

Nevertheless, I like to stimulate discussion and some debate...so...if you leave the EDC bag in the car while you pop into the grocery store.....are you really EDC'ing that gear?  Or have you set up a gear bag for exigent circumstances while driving? Maybe the reality is that your EDC is the stuff you actually keep in your pockets......

If we each keep it real, I think we can all learn from each other and develop a richer perspective on the subject. If you decide to pack 5 kilos of gear into a backpack, to keep to the true spirit of this challenge, you should carry that 5Kg bag part of the day everyday. And you should let us know how much you hate us and regret joining the challenge. Because that will be funny.  :D

The intent of the challenge is for participants to evaluate one real set of EDC gear for a month as it is designed by that participant to be carried and used. What works? What doesn't work? What might you add? What will be left at home after the challenge is over? How often did you NOT carry your EDC? How often did you leave some of it at home or in the car?

Other challenges require artificial limitations, e.g. one tool for 30-days. This one just demands that you stick to your plan.

Hopefully each participant will share his or her personal assessment of their EDC over the course of the challenge and we'll all get some ideas and perspectives.   :tu:

As with every challenge, participants will only have as much fun with this challenge as they make it; participants will only get as much out of this challenge as they put into it.

I'm not sure that really cleared things up.....
