Day 29

Only one day left (or last day for some).  Time flies when you’re having fun.

Today was a Yeoman heavy day of opening a package, prying open a plastic box of ammo, cutting open a bag of oranges and writing a grocery list.

Tomorrow is going to be a long day, so I'm going to post Day 30 now.  It was a great challenge!  I've learned (or confirmed) that a good amount of my personal usage involves a blade.  I could probably get away with just a SAK, probably even just the Executive, for most of my EDC use.  My phone sees a great bit of use, more for photos and internet stuff than actually as a phone.  My own set sees use, more personal than work anymore, and the Zippo for an occasional cigar or fire starting.  I've carried a handkerchief since I was a boy, often to clean my glasses or keep my pocket knife secure in my pocket.  Every time I think I can leave my pliers tool at home, I need it so it's not going anywhere.  I'm definitely looking forward to switching things out for a change, but I could get by comfortably with the kit I used here.  Thanks for hosting this Challenge Jack, and see everyone in the 111 Challenge!

Day 29

Still day 29 for me and I've had another failure. The tamper nub on my pipe knife came off again today. At least it came off in my pocket this time.  The last time it dropped off in the yard and it took me 3 weeks to find it.

Day 30

Mountaineer helped open a new bottle of supplement this morning.

Meanwhile, I also taken apart and tidy up the bracelet one last time before the challenge ends today.

First off, gonna say a big thank you to Nix for the EDC in DEC challenge! :hatsoff:   It's pretty thought provoking, as it did give me a good chance to evaluate a whole set of gears and how it interact with each other, instead of just focusing on one tool for the entire month.  And I would also like to thank many of you whom have taken the time to participate in this challenge, it surely makes it a fun and interactive experience.

About my gears, I certainly had gone into the challenge with a light hearted attitude and trying to have fun instead of carefully thinking thru what I really do need.

Half the gears(playing card, paracord, challenge coin, lighter, or even the notepad and pen) are mostly there just-in-case.  I tried using the pen and notepad to record my weight loss challenge progress, but end up winging it since there are enough to write about and it's a real hassle to.  The IMCO lighter proven to be useful once, during a family birthday party but that's that.  The paracord bracelet is neat, but I think I probably would like it even better incorporated into the gear caddy, instead of wearing it on a wrist the whole day.

In terms of knives/tools, the SAK mountaineer is surely my most used tool, no surprise there since we are SAKnights.

I do appreciate the convenience of one hand opening Benchmade Bailout for quick task.  But in reality, BM had heat treated that 3V pretty soft, so I think it's performance is only comparable to S30V or even lower steel.  It's slight annoying since I have to always make the conscious choice of either spending a lot of time stropping/sharpening, or just be stuck with a dullish knife for a long period of time.  The tanto tip is neat to look at, but I certainly would have even a better time if it is a drop point or spear point knife.

But as Nix rightly pointed out, that's probably why we do challenge, to learn more about the gear and our use.

Last, but no mean least, I do appreciate the gear caddy I use here, even though it is just an El' cheapo Amazon Nurse pocket organizer.  I love how it practically load all the gears into my cargo pants in one-go, and it keeps the knife upright inside the pocket for quick and easy access.  Very neat, and now I am convinced.

Anyhow, thanks again everyone, and I will see you on the next one! :salute:

DAY 29
So, after a proper use shot yesterday, I was given a simple task; Open a bottle of Italian Shampoo  :drink:

Naturally, that would be too boring without the use of one of my EDC (in DEC) tools. In this case; the FX  :tu:

Therefore, I present for your delectation both the before, and after shots.. :salute:

Mrs Surge was a little critical of the delay in service time  :pok:
However, one suffers for one's art  :twak:
Was it a twist bottle cork?  How does a can opener open a cork?  :pok:

Day 30 is upon us (or those down under anyway) and think this will be post 2002 in this thread, wow what a great effort everyone.

It’s been a very enjoyable challenge thank you Nix, top idea. Would I change much? No not really think I chose about right at the start and it’s served me well throughout.

Used most things at some point and haven’t found myself missing anything, although looking forward to being able to use a larger SAK very soon (111 here we come) and not having to take my sunglasses on the dog walk when it’s pouring with rain.

So here’s a pic of the full kit out on today’s dog walk and some uses already today

(Image removed from quote.)

Package arrived with the Ranger I ordered before Christmas as well as two new SAK display cases, going to enjoy resorting them :)

And finally combo tool opened the zippo fluid to degunk the bantam’s blade

Thanks everyone for a mighty fine challenge :like:

I swear Coco makes up half the fun of the photo shot, the dog surely knows how and when to pose!
See you on 111!

Earthquake??? I hope everyone is ok.  I check this site that happens to be based in Hungary   https://rsoe-edis.org/  to find out what hazards I may face in my day but I missed checking yesterday so I hadn't heard anything.

My family is fine, just shaken up. People in Petrinja, Glina, Sisak and the surrounding area have been hit very hard, with most of them losing the roof over their heads. Yesterday it was a 6.4 earthquake, followed by a number of smaller ones if we count only ones above 3.0. A big part of the issue is that the day before that same area was hit by a 5+ one. We felt all of those in Zagreb, but the sheer devastation that that area experienced is awful

Day 30
Today I've used the file of the Vic. Spirit to remove a burr of a key I carry in my wallet. It was catching on the inside of the wallet.

This December was not an usual month for me. Not much walks, hikes or trips to town but working from home office instead.

Still, I did use the pliers and do think I would miss them when I leave them out of my EDC.
I even used the file of the Spirit more than once.

The Executive has been a treat, I've used all implements of it frequently.
And I found its big blade to be just enough for Apple & Kiwi duty.
The orange-peeler-serrated-thingy is great too if you eat oranges daily, which I don't. I found other uses for it though  :D

The most used item of the Swisscard was the magnifier.
And I did use the Mini Tools blade once.
I would have used the Swisscard & the Mini Tool more when traveling to town (due to knife laws), which only happened once  :-\

To sum it up for me, I'm pretty happy with my choices and shouldn't have to change a thing...

...apart from the watch maybe.
On work days it is a bit in the way on my wrist.
But I will continue to carry a watch (G-Shock most probably) daily for now as I find it much more convenient than using the phone for it (which I spent too much time on anyways).

That being said, I'm looking forward to mix things up for a change...   :D
