I have the feeling that this https://www.amazon.com/Swiss-Tech-Multitool-Multi-Tool-Screwdriver/dp/B08DHWHZFZ is going to feel a lot like this

Except that it's for a month.

Good song!

Here is a review of the TripSaver: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,87841.msg2267446.html#msg2267446

Perhaps I will grow to like it more after using it for a month.

I've owned a few variations of that tools (plain needlenose, CAT branded blunt nose, and Malaysian National Police with strap cutter and tanto blade) and I view it as a nice design, just poorly executed with poor materials and workmanship. The interesting thing is that the Malaysian Police tool was never done as intended. The contract was cancelled AFTER Utica produced the entire run, and they've ended up in various places. My four Multimasters were sold together as a lot for like $20; as factory overruns. I feel that if the finish were upped, the blades actually sharp (which I don't mind, but that belt cutter is a PITA to even try to sharpen) and the pliers made from something other than steel "with a hardness in the hard cheeses category" it would be a good tool. It's pretty much the oldest multiool design still in production in its basic form. It's built like a tank, and you can't kill them. I am going to try to find a 1980s or 1990s made example, and hopefully, it will be better made.

I was thinking about backing out of this challenge due to there being too many awesome tools and too little time to spend a month using something I don’t like.

But then I decide to stick with it.  I had three candidates -
- Victorinox Evo S18 - As much as I love SAKs of all sizes, I can’t stand the ergonomic grips on the Evo line.  I also find the locking mechanism uncomfortable and awkward.
- Leatherman Squirt PS4 - I really wanted to like this little tool and would if I didn’t find the two drivers nearly impossible to open.  The nail nicks seem to be so shallow, small and close to the scales that I find they do not work.
- Kutmaster Minimaster - I do not like having to open it to access any tool.  I also do not like that with just about any tool you try to open, all the tools want to come open.  Also, I’m not sure why but I just feel the quality may be a little suspect, which irritates me due to how much I like my old Utica knives.

After some deliberation, I’ve decided on the Minimaster.  I feel that maybe I haven’t given the Minimaster a fair chance compared to other tools by bigger names.

Thanks for stepping up to this challenge, part of the fun is to dig deep for find some ingenuity for creative use, and make the most out of any situation that would come our way.

That's awful pricey for half a Leatherman.  :pok:

The prices have gone up a lot, but when I got mine it was about $20-$25.  Also, there are a couple versions with the made in China ones being the cheapest and sometimes available for less than $10.

So I probably should have asked before entering...

Is modding a less-than-liked tool to make it more likable OK for the challenge?

One of the love/hate things about the S557 is I like having a nail file, but miss having a small knife blade.

So I used the tips in Felix Immler's YouTube video "The Hook Blade Trick - Swiss Army Knife modification - Victorinox custom & maintenance (20/25)" to grind a hook blade into the can opener.

So now I have a sort-of second blade, good for ripping open boxes and plastic clamshell packaging at least.

Some people are choosing premium tools that they just never got used to and others are going to try to get by with Junque.  I see the latter as being the more difficult challenge.  I'm suggesting that this challenge needs an escape clause.  If a tool is so irredeemable that it just can't be used then we shouldn't force the user to continue with it, as that would be cruel. After all, knowing a tool is really that bad is still useful information. However, there would need to be some sort of penalty to make up for changing carries mid-challenge.  Perhaps requiring the user to continue to take their daily picture with the terrible tool, but pictured along with the tool they are using in its place, and explaining each day why the one is better than the other for a particular use.  :dunno: It's either that, or forty lashes with a wet noodle.

I got mine around the time Armstrong Tools went out of business, as a seller had several Utica-made knives and multitools Armstrong had sold under their name (and etched "ARMSTRONG" where Utica would normally be stamped). If I recall, I paid $15.

Day 1

I used the saw to shorten a Bic pen even further. I wanted another cm off, to make it flush with the rest of my keychain items.
The saw did an average job. This pen was originally shortened from full length with the Roxon Storm. That saw was nice. Much more aggressive than the Flik's saw. The Flik took longer, and it kept binding, and in the end I cracked the plastic.

Jothra did some pliers-based solo challenges years ago and vowed to use the tool until the pliers jaws broke, rendering it unusable. Maybe that's the escape clause for Junque (I love that term!) - if it breaks so that it's unusable, you can bring in another unliked sub or have to withdraw?

Reporting back on the limits of these tools would be great info to share.

I have to admit I'm in the "premium tools that they just never got used to" group. I don't expect my Victorinox to break. I'll just be contending with the frustration level of not carrying one of my first string SAKs. But I won't drop out due to remorse - I knew what I was signing up for!

Day 1

20210801_105053 by Humayd a r Mahomedy, on Flickr

i'm going with a Swisstool for this challlenge,i got it used, from a friend who got it used,in June 2019.
i don't hate the tool,nor do i dislike it,it just isn't a good fit for me.
it is very well made, and this particular tool looks to have had some cosmetic work done on the pliers and handles.the file also has a notch cut into it.
i find some of the tools difficult to access, and the edges of the handles were uncomfortable in use, even though i hit them with a de-burring wheel on the buffer.
i do like the tool enough to want more, especially the X model.
some of my hesitance is probably due to the tool being pre,pre,pre-owned.
let's see how i find this tool after 30 days

So as long the mods does not alter the original too much, I think it is acceptable.  But I would suggest to refrain from doing further mods to the tool until the end of the challenge.

Alan, good point, I tend to agree with SteveP's quote on Jothra, that we ought to give it a sincere effort and give it out best shot before contemplating an escape clause(unless it somehow cause bodily harm, that's a totally different scenario.  Unlike other challenges, this one will actually challenge our ingenuity and tolerance, can we make the best of the situation knowing all the flaws and weaknesses of tool, and still be able to come up on top after spending a month with Junque?

I don't expect everyone to finish liking their tool, but I am sure this will widen our horizon to be more accepting and tolerant towards different kind of tools we used to.

This Wetols I got from Amazon cost me $22, and considering the lower cost, it is actually relatively well made.  But it is a real pant dragger(which I really do hate), and I sworn I need to hold onto my pants whenever I need to take a leak.  Crazy heavy, a whopping 336g (11.8oz), it looks beefy right next to a Spirit X.

I am marinating a couple of pork tenderloins this morning and decided to use a non-alcoholic Heiniken as the liquid. I pulled out the TripSaver to open the bottle and then remembered that for the TripSaver the can/bottle opener is replaced by an awl. No problem.

I grabbed the bottle with my left hand by the neck. I stuck the plier head tips under the bottle cap and, using my left index finger as a fulcrum, pried the bottle cap off. A trick that I am sure many if not all of you know. I had no worries about the plier tips. The plier head is quite robustly built.

The Gerber MP-600. I've never liked it because the tools are short for a full size tool and it is uncomfortable for me to carry it.  Here the sliding pliers are seen withdrawn and deployed.
