Day 3

Just opened a package with the knife, bit large for the job but worked fine

It is a rather "unique" tool but, that said, different is good  :tu:

Daredevil Day 3: I think the heat and humidity finally killed our old keypad deadbolt, so replacement was in order.  Normally I would use a screwdriver, but it's Daredevil month, so I gave it a shot.  The screwdriver was long enough to access the screws for the deadbolt through the thick battery housing on the inside of the door, which was somewhat surprising given it's odd, widening shape.  When install the same sort of screw in the new lock, it started going downhill.  Whoever makes the actual parts (China) doesn't really clean out the threads, and while one went in easily, I reached a point where I could not turn other at all using the  Swiss+Tech.  It really felt like the tool was going to give out.  I switched to a Kobalt ratchet screwdriver, which I thought might strip out, having done that to one of their ratchet end wrenches, but it drove the screw in easily.  Larger grip and more leverage won the day.

To be fair, I doubt my Leatherman PST would have worked better than the Swiss+Tech, and if the lock were finished better, the Swiss+Tech would have been all I needed for both large and small screws.

Yep, Swiza.

It's the D04, which is kinda their take on the Tinker. Back when Swizas came out, they were a lot more expensive than their equivalent Victorinox models  (about double), but I just so happened to find this one (only offered in black) on sale for $20 about a year or two after they came out. They're decent knives, but I've never been able to give up SAKs for one, and the full range has never been really available in the US. And the Phillips is #0/ #1 not #1/#2 like SAKs. I do like that they have a one-hand opening blade in what is just a little bit larger (95mm) than a 93mm frame as opposed to a 111mm-size knife, which is really too big for EDC. The new SH09TR really gets my attention.

The Phillips is one of the better features of the NXT 8) It had a good reach, good bite and the lock holds well :salute: I tightened a loose clip on a Dealt battery drill and it performed well :D

Getting my kit ready for work tomorrow and I'm sneaking in the OHT (so I can use it more)

I tried to fit it in the pouch I use for my OG Surge (it was, to say the least, snug )  :P

A change of clothes was required so I used this old LM pouch (no idea what was originally in it  :dunno: )

Day 3 - First Grumbles...

The serrated, Wenger-design scissors do not cut flimsy stuff well at all.

I tried to cut up the plastic rings that held my bottles of Diet Coke and the S557 wasn't doing it. The plastic just wrapped around the scissors blades. If I cut with just the tips of the scissors, held the plastic taught, and cut with a sharp snap, then it worked.

Same with opening my bag of chips for lunch.

For comparison, I tried the non-serrated Victorinox scissors on my 1983 Champion. No problem cutting either item with them. Same success with regular kitchen scissors.

I bought the S557 new in May and it's seen very litle use since then, so I don't think I'm dealing with dull scissors.

Day 3

I found something that the TripSaver does relatively well (relative to other MTs). I drove a ground rod (also known as a earth rod) and needed to connect the ground wire to the rod with a direct burial ground clamp. To install the clamp, you slide it over the wire and rod and tighten the bolt. My Knipex were back at my van, so I used the TripSaver instead. The plier head can handle larger bolt heads than the typical MT. The only aggravation is that the handles really do close too closely together. I can not work the MT one-handed nearly as well as I can other pliers and MTs.

I have a Evogrip 14 and I was disappointed with its scissors. It has trouble cutting pliable material.

Day 3

I was at Lowe's today. I went in there for a bifold door hardware kit, a new pair of linesman's pliers, and a new electrical outlet to replace one that tended to not hold plugs tightly anymore. WHile in the electrical stuff, I bought a new electrical meter. Battery had to be installed, but was included.  Haven't heard of a 23A before. It's about 2/3 the size of a AAA, but about the same diameter. And, 12 volts! I normally go with analog meters, and I decided to try a digital one, despite being $10 more (while I can't do continuity as easy with one of these, it is easier to read). Because of the smaller size, it doesn't use a 9V like most of my other meters.

Part of the reason I rarely ever carry this Swiza is that the backside Phillips is smaller than that on a Victorinox (or even Wenger/Delemont). However, a lot of battery covers are #1. I have usually been carrying my Bond as my main pliers-based tool, and if I need a bit that is Torx or hex (most of what's in the kit as I have the removable adapter card laid out), I use the removable bit adapter. I don't keep the #1/#2 bit in the card anymore; as I had to make room for a more speciality bit from the larger bit kit. That helps make it a good multitool companion.

Thanks, Adam. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Later in the afternoon, the Wenger scissors failed cutting through a piece of very thin elastic cord and through a plastic bag. I couldn't even slice along the length of the plastic bag because of the serrations.

So scissors that don't cut - fail!

Day 03
Afternoon smoke interrupted by the afternoon rain which started early today.  So here's the MP600 Pro-Scout on my umbrella.
This picture reminds me of a LM tool that I constantly find rusty no matter what I do with it.  I could have sworn I even drench it with WD40 and it will still rust in a few months time sitting in a dry cabinet.  Eventually I have accepted the fact that some tool will just rust if you look at it wrong. :dunno:

Vic scissors is the best, especially for precision cut.  I think Wenger's 'shear' is meant for more robust stuff, but it's not too shabby if the medium is just paper.  One way I used to test a scissors is to have it cut cling wrap, if it could cut it with ease, it's a good one.

23A is kinda common for wireless door chime, but I agree, it was an oddity when I first saw it.  I haven't used my Swiza for the longest time, but did vaguely remember the tolerance of the tools kind resembled Wenger/Delemont.  How was your copy?

But 4 scissor uses and 4 failures.   :twak:

As for SAKs, I won't carry one without an inline Phillips. Just too handy.

And my hex bit coupler fits on it well too.

(Some older Wengers had official 2D Phillips blades. I've never used one, but seems no more than a glorified nail cleaner.)
