Day 30. Opened a Condor Moonshiner I picked up cheap; and used the belt cutter to strip off the plastic mailer.  I bought this to help clear fence lines and to accompany a chainsaw when working in the woods. It's got a nearly quarter-inch thick nine-inch 1075 carbon steel blade that should take rough use well.  The Marble's #3 Safety Axe I bought for the Nessmuk Challenge is light but constantly came up short in heavy use compared to my Estwing and Stihl Woodcutter 200g Forestry/Camp hatchet. It was light, and easily carried, but too light duty. I think the Condor will do that job much better.

111mm Day 30 by cody6268, on Flickr

And my finishing thoughts. 111mms were bought for me to serve as work and outdoor knives. I used them a lot in that regard for 6 years before this challenge, and still do to this date. The Dual Pro X was purchased specifically for this challenge when I came across it in used (but great condition for cheap. It has quickly become a go-to SAK. But, last year, Alox Fever really started to take hold. While they don't have as many tools, they pocket carry better and have in-line awls. Alox handles don't bend like 111mm liners. The tool sets are simplistic, and the Harvester is geared well towards what I do. But, I think looking back at this challenge, I will expand my selection of one and two layer 111mm, as they are more pocketable. While I mostly pocket carry my 111mm now, I mostly carried my M2008 Soldier in a belt sheath, or in the interior pocket of a coat. I can't wait to combine saw and file; in the form of a Locksmith. Or the dual in-line drivers of the Hercules. A Rescue Tool will be bought for my collection, and a second bought for my truck.    I will make some mods too--in the form of a model that is 2HO PE blade+saw and that's it; as well as a model that has both blades of the Dual Pro X; the Dual Pro's openers, as well as the Hunter XT's saw. Basically, a Fireman/Jumpmaster with two one-hand opening blades.   This challenge I think will make me really expand my 111mm horizons past 3-4 layer models mostly chosen for work.

:iagree: :tu: :tu:

Thanks Barry. I've collected 111mm more out of curiosity than practical need but truth be told the Hunter has really impressed me. That this is an RAF SAK just amuses me but it's a good combination of tools and this challenge has made me reflect on 111mm in a positive way. Obviously on this side of the pond the rules do mean you need to give more thought to when and why you carry 111mm but swapping out for another SAK just means something else get's some pocket time. And right now I'd like (but won't) be enjoying Spartan Saturday!

Day 30:
Last day and Mac Day .
Based on RP’s spiffing work in episodes shown tonite Mac will using Standard, Tinker and  Recruit. I chose Standard. Posing with Forester and contemplating removing the comp. from new toy:

As a summary the big boys handled themselves quite well. There wasn’t that much real needs but when one popped up they were up for it.
Twice an other SAK/multitool was needed, I needed Tinker’s Philips once and Beretta’s hammer once, but that was it.

Interesting thoughts, Cody. Now that the end of the challenge is near, it's a good moment to reflect on one's attitude towards the 111 mm models.

I share your consternation regarding the soft liners. One of my Tradesman's outer liners is bent despite me hardly ever using that SAK. I haven't the foggiest idea where and how this might have happened. Considering that the 111 mm SAKs are made for heavy(-ish) duty use, that's a real bummer.

Other than that, my opinion after carrying the Hercules for a month is that 111 mm SAKs are great and quite different - in a good way - from 91 and 93 mm SAKs. Despite sharing most of the tools, the latter appear to be chiefly aimed at use in urban, civilised surroundings whereas the former seem to be addressed first and foremost to people engaging in outdoor activities.

There is no strict separation though; with the right toolset, a 91/93 mm can become a superb hiking knife and a 111 mm can become a discrete companion for city dwellers.
But in principle, I feel that if I go camping, or hiking in the mountains for more than a day, or just to a picnic, I might prefer the Hercules over the similarly tooled CT34 or Handyman. On the other hand, if I just go about my everyday (city) life and want to feel prepared, despite the 111 mm's greatness I think I will rather stick to the 91/93 mm class.

It's quite a difficult call though. As I stated before, after one month with the Hercules in my pocket, I can safely say that in casual clothes, it does not feel any different to my usual EDC, a CT 34. My reason to go back to EDC'ing a 91/93 mm is mostly that I feel they are somehow more "appropriate" for city dwellers (well, that and I miss my small blade).

Day 30.
As close as I can get to Spartan Saturday my Nomad cut tags off a new table reading lamp. I think the two layer SAKs, we'll leave size to one side for now, are pretty sensible carry unless you need something specific like a wood saw etc. I do like the Nomad and I really should upgrade mine with a small screwdriver in the corkscrew.

Day 30
This month flew by.  I decided to end it with the Outrider opening a package of hot dogs

This has been the first time carrying a 111mm SAK.  Overall, this challenge has just confirmed what I already knew which is I prefer the 91/93mm SAKs.  The larger locking blade and inline Phillips of the Outrider are nice to have.  For my purposes and hand size the 111mm doesn’t really give and increase that warrants the size/bulk increase.  The Outriders toolset is my favorite of the 111mm line.

By the way, why do I get the impression after reading the various "Day 30" entries as if this were the last day of the challenge? Last time I checked January had 31 days

More great uses and pice, y’awl!

Day 30

Last day of the challenge already! I used the curved blade of my Rescue Tool to open up another sack of sunflower hearts for the birds - it’s the Big Garden Birdwatch in the UK this weekend, after all! Total overkill, but the curved blade cut the stitching, and the poke-y end pulled the loose thread up nicely and the thread pulled out very satisfyingly!

111s are great tools, but knife laws being what they are in the UK they won’t be an edc for me, though the Cheeses Master mk2 might make its way into a rucksack when heading out on a hike to assist with refreshments!

Thanks for presiding over a great challenge, Vicman!  Doubtless there’ll be an alcohol-related bonus later in the day!

Day 30
Outrider with my 91mm modded knife, the one I'll go back to carrying after the challenge:

I enjoyed this challenge and I learned that you all use your knives a lot!  :salute:  Thank you Nix for hosting the challenge and comis for the cool magnet!  :tu:
While I like the Outrider, this challenge helped me to determine that all I really need on a daily urban basis is a Classic, or Vagabond which I prefer.
Every time I'd open a package with the 111mm I kept thinking it was too much blade.  Somehow I felt in less control of precise cutting, probably from years of carrying 91mm and smaller.
I worried using it to open my book yesterday.  :ahhh
Though, after saying all that, I wouldn't hesitate to take the Outrider camping.  :tu:
I'm planning a bonus picture for tomorrow.
