Day 30.
As close as I can get to Spartan Saturday my Nomad cut tags off a new table reading lamp. I think the two layer SAKs, we'll leave size to one side for now, are pretty sensible carry unless you need something specific like a wood saw etc. I do like the Nomad and I really should upgrade mine with a small screwdriver in the corkscrew.

Day 30

Tinkering with the kids

By the way, why do I get the impression after reading the various "Day 30" entries as if this were the last day of the challenge? Last time I checked January had 31 days

It is a 30 Day Challenge

More great uses and pice, y’awl!

Last day of the challenge already! I used the curved blade of my Rescue Tool to open up another sack of sunflower hearts for the birds - it’s the Big Garden Birdwatch in the UK this weekend, after all! Total overkill, but the curved blade cut the stitching, and the poke-y end pulled the loose thread up nicely and the thread pulled out very satisfyingly!

I agree Phil.  I have a Spartan begging for some pocket time.  See you there next Saturday!
Thanks Barry. I've collected 111mm more out of curiosity than practical need but truth be told the Hunter has really impressed me. That this is an RAF SAK just amuses me but it's a good combination of tools and this challenge has made me reflect on 111mm in a positive way. Obviously on this side of the pond the rules do mean you need to give more thought to when and why you carry 111mm but swapping out for another SAK just means something else get's some pocket time. And right now I'd like (but won't) be enjoying Spartan Saturday!

I just re-read the first page of this thread. Well, yes, so it's a 30 day challenge. But come on, this feels so wrong, like stopping at km 40 because it's a 40 k race instead of going on some more and running a marathon. So I for one will definitely post a Day 31 pic tomorrow. The opera isn't finished until the fat lady sings, right?

Day 30

Outrider celebrating the end of the 111mm challenge with a seafood platter

and also helping to prepare for the challenge next month--Poker Face Challenge!

First off, gonna thanks Nix for hosting this wonderful challenge! :hatsoff:

111mm OHO Trekker has always been my go-to for outdoor activities for years, and it's been one of my most trusted companion to many trips travelling aboard.  So I have envisioned the challenge would just be a stroll in memory lane using my OHO Trekker, but somewhere in the middle of the challenge, it had me realized how much I did miss the small blade and the scissors in an urban environment.

So I started putting the Outrider in use from the collection for the first time, and really grew to love the combination of scissors and small philps on the chassis.  The slider lock is a change for me as well, but to be absolutely honest, the up and down play/lock design still have me nervous as a knife enthusiast and I think I would still prefer the liner lock if I were to use the knife/tool for rougher use.

I have used both OHO Trekker(regular and RT version) and Outrider interchangeably thru out the challenge, and by the end of the challenge, it's clear to me that they have their forte.  I think ultimately, I would want a Outrider chassis with an OHO blade, and potentially even with an additional metal file/saw, and am looking forward to do a mod like that.

Thanks again for everyone posting and sharing in this challenge, I have fun reading and partaking in the conversations, and I see you on the next challenge!

Day 28

They said 1 inch and this is what was out there when I took Fisher out in the afternoon
(Image removed from quote.)

Wow, snow!

Day 28
Switched back to the Outrider because I missed the scissors.  Pictured on the landscape gravel that I opened with the Adventurer yesterday.
I too really do grow to appreciate the scissors on the Outrider, either that or the small blade, I often felt I can't live without them.

Day 29

A mate gave me some new chili sauces to add to the collection, must have about 10 on the go at the moment.
Both very nice, plastic wrapped tops removed with Outrider blade

(Image removed from quote.)
Gonna admit that's the most handsome chili sauce I'd have seen for awhile...

Who is going to carry their 111 regularly beyond this challenge?  Anyone going to expand on their collection?  I really like the ones I presently have, and would like to give the Workchamp a try EDC wise on a longer term basis.  I think it would team up with my Exec and/or an Opinel very well.  From the very limited experience I've had with it, and the 111's in general, it seems they're built to be virtually indestructible.  The backspring lockup on the screwdrivers on the Workchamp lock up like a vault, as does the blade.  The RAF Hunter is a real joy to carry, and I really learned to respect that belt cutter.  It worked superbly as a small blade, saving the large blade for other tasks.  The saws on both models need no more praise other than I like having the extra length when it comes time to use them.  Makes cutting larger pieces of wood for the campfire a lot easier!  The great thing about both of mine is they have the toothpick and tweezers.  I learned just how hardy the pliers are for tasks a bit bigger than the tweezers can handle.  I even learned that the pliers on my Swisschamp can handle tasks bigger than I thought when they assisted the Workchamp on a job.  Just some ramblings :D
Like I wrote earlier in the Challenge, I don't know why I didn't jump on the 111 knives sooner!
Carrying 111mm is nothing new to me, since I always carry one whenever I go for a short hike or anything outdoor.  What I am grateful for is to be able to appreciate and use the Outrider, instead of just keeping it in the collection.  It really is an ideal tool for urban environment, and am looking forward to modding one someday.

I never thought about it either and I've been looking at the Work Champs on Ebay.  Might just have to stick to my usual carry of a Swiss Champ or CT-41 with a Spirit, and call it a day.
I think that's part reason why Spirit is such as awesome MT, their weight is very similar and yet Spirit hosts a hefty pliers.

Nice pics and good test comis! :like: :tu: :tu:

111mm Day 29:

The Hercules dressed out a store-caught ham in preparation for lunch later today. A sharp knife is always a joy.

(Image removed from quote.)
Ham! :ahhh

Just FYI: there is a contraption on top of the Coke can allowing you to open the can with nothing but your fingers! Quite ingenious, really. And it's a lot less messy this way too.
You know how most canned food has a little opening tab on top, so no one use a can opener anymore?  MTO SAK knights are the only folks I know will flip the can upside down and insist on using their can opener no matter the opening tab. >:D :D

Day 29

Decided it was a day to wear my Aero B-10 repro flying jacket with its alpaca lining but the RAF Hunter had a lazy day.
Very nice jacket to go with the knife! :tu:

Day 29
Been waiting for the mail to arrive to use my Outrider to open my new-to-me, The Knife and its History book!
(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.)
FB, good use!  Love that book!(just read a later comment about the price, ouch, but I still think it's worth it, especially for the collection!)

:iagree: (Image removed from quote.) cool, the Outrider is great and I must hunt down a copy of the book :like:
You definitely should get one, it's great compliment to any SAK collection!

Day 30

Yet another belt hole.  :woohoo:
(Image removed from quote.)
That is most impressive!

Day 30. Opened a Condor Moonshiner I picked up cheap; and used the belt cutter to strip off the plastic mailer.  I bought this to help clear fence lines and to accompany a chainsaw when working in the woods. It's got a nearly quarter-inch thick nine-inch 1075 carbon steel blade that should take rough use well.  The Marble's #3 Safety Axe I bought for the Nessmuk Challenge is light but constantly came up short in heavy use compared to my Estwing and Stihl Woodcutter 200g Forestry/Camp hatchet. It was light, and easily carried, but too light duty. I think the Condor will do that job much better.

111mm Day 30 by cody6268, on Flickr

And my finishing thoughts. 111mms were bought for me to serve as work and outdoor knives. I used them a lot in that regard for 6 years before this challenge, and still do to this date. The Dual Pro X was purchased specifically for this challenge when I came across it in used (but great condition for cheap. It has quickly become a go-to SAK. But, last year, Alox Fever really started to take hold. While they don't have as many tools, they pocket carry better and have in-line awls. Alox handles don't bend like 111mm liners. The tool sets are simplistic, and the Harvester is geared well towards what I do. But, I think looking back at this challenge, I will expand my selection of one and two layer 111mm, as they are more pocketable. While I mostly pocket carry my 111mm now, I mostly carried my M2008 Soldier in a belt sheath, or in the interior pocket of a coat. I can't wait to combine saw and file; in the form of a Locksmith. Or the dual in-line drivers of the Hercules. A Rescue Tool will be bought for my collection, and a second bought for my truck.    I will make some mods too--in the form of a model that is 2HO PE blade+saw and that's it; as well as a model that has both blades of the Dual Pro X; the Dual Pro's openers, as well as the Hunter XT's saw. Basically, a Fireman/Jumpmaster with two one-hand opening blades.   This challenge I think will make me really expand my 111mm horizons past 3-4 layer models mostly chosen for work.
That's a nice wrap!

Day 30
Outrider with my 91mm modded knife, the one I'll go back to carrying after the challenge:
(Image removed from quote.)

I enjoyed this challenge and I learned that you all use your knives a lot!  :salute:  Thank you Nix for hosting the challenge and comis for the cool magnet!  :tu:
While I like the Outrider, this challenge helped me to determine that all I really need on a daily urban basis is a Classic, or Vagabond which I prefer.
Every time I'd open a package with the 111mm I kept thinking it was too much blade.  Somehow I felt in less control of precise cutting, probably from years of carrying 91mm and smaller.
I worried using it to open my book yesterday.  :ahhh
Though, after saying all that, I wouldn't hesitate to take the Outrider camping.  :tu:
I'm planning a bonus picture for tomorrow.
Lisa, I share a similar thought as you, I do various challenges on MTO makes me realize how much of a scissors and small blade fan I had became.  But like Sos24 said earlier, a small traditional slip joint would compliment the mighty 111mm well, and that just opened a how new way of carrying for me.  Likewise, I think many of us carry our favorite 91/93mm on a daily basis, and a nice 111mm OHO model would be a great addition/compliment whenever we need something more handy or sturdier for the use.

Oh, I'm very happy to include day 31 when it means carrying a 111mm!  I think I will switch up to an alternate knife, however. The Hercules has been outstanding for this challenge, but something a bit different is indicated for the bonus day!
