Day 30

I've been wanting to participate in a 111mm Challenge for a long time.  As I've said, I wish I jumped on the 111mm train long ago.  I would never have bought so many folders in my younger days.  Year before last, I gave away and even threw out several folders.  I discovered a couple of almost identical C&C liner locks, and I know I never carried them because they both have very weak lockups.  One of my most anticipated and carried folders in those days was rubbish around the campsite, much to my dismay.  After getting and handling my One Handed Trekker... I'd felt that this would have been perfect.

When choosing a multitool to EDC, since I don't need pliers day to day... a knife based MT is what I'm after... but when the knife is front and center in the pack, who needs a folder any more.... not me.  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,84310.0.html  I'd say that the 111mm One Handed Trekker, and also my One Handed Nomad fit the bill just fine...  I was just talking to a pal that went on a hike last weekend... in his daypack he had a SOG folder that he always carries and a Leatherman. He's not really a knife guy but he carries one all the time... and unprompted he says that he has to "reevaluate" that in terms of weight in his pack.  The 111mm SAKs are a logical choice for even the uninitated.

This month I wasn't able to get out for a weekend camping trip, so unfortunately I didn't get the chance to put my OHT through its paces.  For an EDC at this point in time, it's definitely too much.  I don't need that much blade these days.  I'm known to do a lot of minor food prep with my EDC, and I haven't been doing any of that due to infection precautions during the pandemic.  I fear that my lifestyle and habits have changed to obviate the need for a larger blade for that purpose... but hopefully that will change again.

The one-hand opening mechanism is not as smooth as I would like since there is still a backspring.... and I've noted that I almost always open it two handed.  :climber: That said, the thumb hole makes that very easy to do.  I've become fully accustomed to closing it two-handed with not even a second thought about it.  I "notice" the absence of a sharp point to the blade... I'm not sure what to make of that, but it's not unlike when I "notice" that old knee injury when climbing the 4th flight of stairs.  I found that I noticed that more as the challenge went on.     I didn't use the can opener, but did use the small SD on it briefly for something.  No real issues there.   The large SD and bottle opener, however    In the beginning of all of this I was happy to have a very sturdy locking SD that could do some significant prying.  But extracting this tool became a chore that I found myself shying away from.  The retention of the back spring was an absolute nail twister sometimes, if I didn't carefully align the tool in my hands, and catch the SD from the back with my middle finger on the way out.  I appreciate the liner lock on a screwdriver quite a bit, on the face of it, but even though it's actuated by my right thumb, it is recessed in such a way that I have to deliberately look at it and depress it.  The whole process makes my think twice about using that tool.   :dunno: . The saw hasn't come into use this month, but I'm glad to have it on this particular tool, as I have one without it, and will get yet another without it.  The awl didn't have as much use this month as I'd have thought... mainly because of my daily activities more than anything else.  I remember using it for a package in the recent past, and it worked fine for that.  Last but certainly not least... the age-old question of the corkscrew or the Phillips.   :dunno:  I'm decidedly a corkscrew guy myself.  But when it came to an outdoor tool, I paradoxically flipped to a Phillips.  I think there are two reasons for that - the overall appearance and form factor is more streamlined, and that it harkens back to my first SAK, the Tinker small.  My Nomad has a corkscrew, truth be told since I don't have either a corkscrew or a Phillips on my EDC SAK... this question in my mind is reserved for my outdoor adventures, and I have yet to give that a good solid think  since I used to have my SwissChamp somewhere along with me anyway.  So that's my analysis of the tool....  Excellent for an EDC (with or without the saw) but the large SD can be a real pain in the thumb sometimes.  Being that the flat SD is a must-have for my EDC, it gives me real pause for a 111mm being my EDC for the near future.  But as we all know... times and tasks change.  If my future is anything like my past, this 111mm is waiting in the wings and will be put to good use, as it would have back then.

I'm looking forward to reading through all the posts again from the beginning - really it's going to be interesting to see how everyone came along with their 111mm SAKs.  Everyone is usually enthusiastic, but often one can get a different sense of utility from observing the daily uses.  Just like, I found myself making sub-concious choices in hindsight, I wonder if anyone else did the same.

I want to give a shout out to Nix for organizing this 111mm Challenge.   :cheers:I have really been looking forward to this, more than most challenges because I wanted to see everyone else's uses and pictures, as much as I have wanted to put my OHT through the grind.  Even though this was not an ideal month for me, I'm very happy to have had the opportunity to participate and very much enjoyed it.  Your contributions to MTo are much appreciated, and this challenge has been great fun... almost a stand-in for actually being able to go camping this month.  Also a very very special thanks to VICMAN  Your individualized replies throughout the thread were an incredibly kind gesture. I looked forward each and every day to your nod.  :hatsoff:

And  to all.

Thank you Nix for hosting the challenge! :hatsoff: :salute:

Well done Vicman and thank you for being great company in the Challenge. Great to see such a wide range of things we all get up to in the Challenge from the normal to the "Who'd a thought it" and everything in between.

So +1 with a big thank you to Nix - it's a long time since I got into a Challenge but I've thoroughly enjoyed my 111mm time. Well done Nix and congratulations everyone else for sticking with it

Absolutely Barry. And I've a whole week to work out which one too

As I've stuck closely to the 111 thing there'll be quite a bit of SAK rotation here before we get to Saturday too  :ahhh
