Great to see some green reappearing.
Will those trees recover too?

Nice pics btw.  :like:
Thanks McS :tu:

Tbh the recovery is a bit patchy, we’ve had a lot of rain this summer and would’ve expected a bit more growth in the last few months.
The canopy is completely destroyed so the growth is happening up the trunks, never seen that before, looks pretty weird, from a distance the trees look like cactus.

Where these were taken I reckon 80% of the trees show some life, amazing in itself considering it was literally scorched earth. About 20km on from here it’s only about 10% regrowth the rest is just blackened trunks as far as the eye can see. Normally this would be thick bush and you wouldn’t see any rocks and little cliff face, just canopy.

You can drive for an hour in any direction, more if you go north (I was heading west) and it’s all been burnt, the size of the area burnt is mind boggling even when you’re used to them.

I was caught in the Kurrajong (blue mountains, so much the same area) fires in 2000, couldn’t leave for 10 days, scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. This was ten times worse.
Amazingly most properties were saved, there’s houses right up to the fire edge and in amongst the bush, it makes you cringe just thinking about it, can’t believe how the firies (all volunteers) do it.

The heat and smoke nearly kills you but it’s the flying embers, sometimes whole branches, leaves, twigs all on fire flying through the air and landing all around you, hitting you etc that really freaked me out. Everything goes a kind of bright purple colour, and then there’s the noise, they call it the freight train, sorry I seem to be having a therapy session, but seeing this reminds me of just how bad it was.

On a brighter note, IT IS slowly recovering, people are back out visiting and although a lot less wildlife, that is returning too

Sorry I got a bit of a flashback writing this :tu:

Lucky you!  Swapping 3 cards landed you a Two Pair(Aqua!)!

The Two Pairs will enable you to carry up to four tools simultaneously till the end of challenge, and based on the suits, a selection amongst 2 traditional/modern folders, a SAK and a plier-based MT.  Sweeeeet!

Wow, another great play! :like:   Two Pairs with 9s and 10s!  What's the likelihood of that?  Double two pairs in a roll?! :woohoo:

The Two pairs you got have all four suits, so you are welcomed to carry any or up to four tools, including a PBMT, Trads/folder, SAK and/or Fixie!

I was just gonna ask about this too--I wonder if the land was once burned and everything was probably dried up due to the high heat, would the same area/edge of that area be more susceptible to forest fire again?  I really hope that's not the case, and hopefully our members will always be less affected by the fire.

I was with the local fire fighters for over 10 years in my younger days. But never faught a bush fire.
The embers seem to be problematic. They can gather in any corners of a building and happily glim away.

Day 21:
For the final round I’ll be going with SwissTool, Voyager, Fiat-pocket knife and small Black Fox tactical folder:

Stop the trouser press!
The Fiat has multiple blades and corkscrew so I don’t thin it qualifies as traditional/folder. Hence, I’ll switch it to CRKT Eros with custom scales:

I think it’ll be a while before these really badly affected areas could burn like that again but there are some areas untouched that could still comis.

The area is so vast that an hour away there’s still huge areas of bush land that didn’t have fires last year that definitely could.
NSW has been in drought for 8 years now and although we’ve had a lot of rain, many areas are still very dry with big fuel buildup on the bush floor.

Near Perth in WA (Western Australia) has had catastrophic fires this summer, its a normal (however terrible) part of this country but these days the intensity is like nothing seen before.
A couple of years ago vast tracts of Tasmania were burnt in places there’s never been fires before.

And of course the west coast of the USA, California particularly has been through awful scenes the last few summers.

I see the poor folk in Texas and the southern states and east coast also going through these extreme weather events and my heart goes out to them, nature like this is a real leveler

Sorry to have got so serious on everyone trying to enjoy the challenge, normal service is now resumed :tu:

Thanks for sharing.

I had just moved to San Diego in 2003 when a wild fire, a remember it being one of the most scary situations in my life.  I wasn’t around long enough to see the recovery, so your description and photos are interesting.

Typing this reminded me of how trying summer and fall of 2003 was for me.  In July, I had just flown back to the US from 6 months deployed on a ship that I was supposed to have transferred off of in December of 2002.  Shortly after arriving back in the US, I was in a motorcycle accident where I was fortunate not to mess myself up too bad but still sustained some injuries.  About a month later, I was living in a hotel in Virginia when a hurricane hit, taking out the electrical power and blocking most roads for over a week.   Shortly after that I arrived in San Diego.  I had just moved into an apartment when I had to evacuate it and get underway, not knowing the status of my apartment or stuff, due to wildfires.  I faired better than many through all of that but it was definitely a stressful 4 months.

Two Pairs!  Almost a full house!  So close!
(Image removed from quote.)

♠ Lucky you!  With two pairs, you could start this 2nd half of the challenge with a choice of 4 tools, each corresponding to the suits.  So please feel free to carry or rotate between a choice of 2 fixed blade and 2 traditional/folders.

♣ To improve your hand, please feel free to request up to 3 cards on or after day 21.  I would definitely trade the 9 to get a shot at a Full house!

I’ll keep my 2 pair and draw for the full house please mate :)

That must have been a confusing time...moving from places while dealing with all the happenings.  Sometimes I do hear people complaining how mundane their lives can be, but I often tell them it really is a blessing in disguise.(except on poker table, drama queens are fun to watch...)
