Making Yeomen - Observations
on: October 23, 2020, 04:35:24 PM
I'm a tinkerer rather than a modder and a tinkerer that regularly take things apart to find out how they work and then consistently fails to put them back together in good working order.

I've recently put together two Yeomanesque knives, one based on a well used Explorer and the other a broken one.

The one in the foreground (OLD) uses an older tool set, grey magnifying glass, long Phillips screwdriver, no multipurpose hook, and the one in the background (NEW) makes use of a toolset from a newer knife, clear magnifying glass, short Phillips and hook back tool.

I started with the NEW one and originally made it:

1. Phillips/Magnifying Glass
2. Scissors
3. Blade/Combo Tool

I didn't like it at all, the Phillips didn't work for me next to the shield scale. I'm sure that it hit the scale liner. Therefore I took it apart and remade it:

1. Scissors
2. Phillips/Magnifying Glass
3. Blade/Combo Tool

It's fine now.

I then made the OLD one replicating the NEW which I considered a success:

1. Scissors
2. Phillips/Magnifying Glass
3. Blade/Combo Tool

Didn't like it. The scissors spring struck me as a hefty piece of metal and the geometry just felt wrong, pulling. So, another failure and strip down to remake it:

1. Phillips/Magnifying Glass
2. Scissors
3. Blade/Combo Tool

Seems fine to me.

Is this just me? Inconsistent workmanship, luck or a random observation that I found it better assembling OLD and NEW in different ways? Or is there something in having that hefty old scissors spring in the centre?

I don't know if the quality of peening can be measured by achieving a constant width along a knife's length. Anyway, my results, shield end - center - scale tool end

OLD: 18.2mm - 17.9mm - 18.1mm (overdone a little in the centre?)
NEW: 17.8mm - 17.9mm - 18.1mm (overdone a little shield end and centre?)

For comparison, a factory fresh knife I measured is the same width both ends and 0.2mm wider in the middle.

Looks great!!  Congratulations!!

I think I would like the layout of the newer one better. The Phillips being “centered “ would feel better in hand, when screwing a screw in.

Too bad the combo tool and Phillips can occupy the same layer.  Or can they?

These are excellent builds.  A good Yeoman is very expensive to buy secondhand, so you've saved yourself a bunch here.  Plus it's just cool building your own.  Well done!

Well done!

I went for the Magnifier/Philips in-the-middle solution for the following reasons.

The Phillips feels nicer in the center position when used.
The Magnifier is better protected from and nicks and dents when positioned right beside the large blade and away from the outer side.

I did use a 90's explorer and a current Compact and didn't find any issues whatsoever.

Great job on the builds man.  I try to build yeomans +B style(With the mag/phillips in the center) I’ve also started adding a second liner between the blade and mag/phillips layer.  Partly to distinguish between the +B models and to avoid the phillips from scratching the blade.  I recently started doing this on scientist builds too.

Cheers to the Yeoman and all who build her!

@SAKTaschenmesser, there is an official Yeoman club thread somewhere.  If you haven't already, you should join.   When it was started originally, I believe folks were leaving a haiku about their Yeoman with their initial post.  All in good fun, of course!    :)

Great job and figuring out and adjusting to what you like.  I love the Yeoman.

McStitchy, looks like an excellent outcome, fine yellow handles.

I decided that I didn't need two Yeomen and took the NEW one apart, yet again, and added a wood saw which is a tool that I use often. Corkscrew and hook (with file) back tools. No idea what this is called.

Nice.  I think there are a few of those floating around amongst members here, but other than Yeoman WS, I don’t think it has a name.  I call mine “Smokey” because of the Smokey the Bear scales.

What does Smokey think about the FireAnt ?  :pok:  :D

Btw, where could I get those scales?
Do they still sell Smokey SAK's ?

Uh... I was thinking about doing exactly that a couple of times.  :like:

I wanted to keep it 5th pocket friendly though which limits it to 3 layers for me there.

Smokey would say “Think”

The Scales are an exclusive of SMKW (Smoky Mountain Knife Works) that came on a Tinker.  There are a few different versions of Smokey on Tinkers or Classics that are still available.  Unfortunately, SMKW does not ship outside the US, so if you wanted one you would needed someone to send them to you.

The Mod was actually done by Max Stone.

I know what you mean about 3-layers. I made a Combo/Blade - Wood Saw - Scissors 3-layer or a family member. I really liked it so I plan to make one for me. I'd also like to do the same on the smaller Wenger frame using an Entree and a Forester.

If I can use your topic to ask a question that's been really annoying for me since a few weeks.

I've made a "cyber compact" mod recently and I want to go for a Yeoman-mod. So far, not so complicated... But, I don't really understand the interest of the Magnifying Glass?

So, here comes my question: What could I put in this layer in front of the phillips screwdriver? Is there any tool that can fit this position? (except the led light wich is too wide in my opinion)
