Cool stuff you see while living on the coast
on: March 07, 2007, 02:24:28 PM
Living on the East Coast of Canada opens one up for alot of jokes, but you also get to see some pretty cool things from time to time.

For example, anyone else see a Navy Frigate a couple of blocks from their house on a regular basis?

This is the HMCS Halifax being towed into port.

These are four mothballed diesel subs, and in the background, two mothballed patrol ships.

This hydrofoil is the former "Spirit of Rochester" now renamed ("Spirit of Ontario") and refitted for duty on the Great Lakes.  I'm not certain how wise a move it was to change the name.  As I am sure Dunc can attest to, changing the name of a ship is considered bad luck, and by the time Palling Rescue makes it up the St Lawrence Seaway to help, there won't be much left!

Parking can be a bit of a pain, but if you want low rent there's always the option of a floating office.  This old fishing boat was converted to office space about 15 years ago.

80's?  That's pretty bad man... I usually at least double that score... and that's on a mere 9 holes....

Wow, that's fancy- I am still using an old Magellan 300.  No maps or anything.  Just a straight line.  If there's a cliff or lake between you and where you want to go, well that's your problem....

Hehe... I know how you feel.  I use a Garmin Etrex that I picked up 7 years ago...

Thats what I had for the last 5 and it worked well for my needs.  I decided it was time for an upgrade to something I probably don't need  >:D

Nothing wrong with new toys that you don't need....

On fact, those are some of the best toys!  Here's my latest- a gift to my wife for her birthday today, but since she doesn't drive much, guess who will enjoy it most? :P

No death-kiss Dunc, but certainly some beautiful pictures!

Hey, question for you though: I've seen those breakwater structures in photos you've posted elsewhere. Is the intent of those things simply to preserve the beaches? Why are they just along that short stretch of coastline?

There are nine of those reefs along a two mile stretch .Their job is to take the power out of the oncoming waves to stop it breaking up the sea wall . They are working . The existing sea wall was built in the 1950's after a big flood where quite a few people died .A couple of miles up the coast to the North where there are no man made reefs and just cliffs there is terrible erosion but the gov. wont do anything about it yet  ::) Not enough population .

Oooh! I know this thread is supposed to have a nautical theme, but what about those tractors!? They look like they're vintage, but in beautiful shape! What make are they? And is the one on the right a 4-wheel drive?

That looks like a pretty heavy axle on the one on the right- I'd be surprised if it wasn't four wheel drive.

Odd to see such clean machines in a coastal region.  Here the rust would have eaten those poor old tractors and left a small amount of red dust and tires within a few years.

There are plenty of old rusty ones about here but a couple of the old retired boys in the village have a bit of a tractor thing going on  :). Im not really into tractors but I will take some more pics when I see them and post on here .
