Replacing Wave microdriver with screwdriver-turned-awl?
on: December 02, 2020, 05:43:51 PM
Hello,

I just had an idea for a mod to my Wave+ and I was wondering if anyone here has done it before. I want to replace the microdriver on my Wave+ with an awl. I have a regular, 2004 Wave that I am willing to cannibalize for the cause. My idea is to take the flathead screwdriver from my old Wave, grind it into an awl, and fit it in place of the microdriver on my Wave+.

I foresee two potential complications. First, the "awl" will have to be shortened in order to clear the tab that the pliers rest on. Second, if I grind the rectangular screwdriver blade into a roughly triangular awl blade, I'm afraid that it will fold so far into the body of the Wave+ that the deployment tab is inaccessible.

Has anybody else done this mod or something similar? Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you mean you would be using an OG first generation Wave flat driver to make the Wave or it is a second generation Wave  If using a first generation one I am not sure that the pivot end of them are compatible enough to let the awl lock  I am sure that several have used a Blast flat driver to make an awl from but can't remember off hand whom it was  hope you can figure it out and get the awl in some way :tu:

Sorry, I should have phrased it differently. I am using the flat driver from a second gen Wave.

Well, I went ahead and tried it. The awl turned out a bit shorter than I would have liked; the size was constrained by the plier head stop. The access tab will also limit how deep it can drill. It doesn't have a sewing eye or a groove for reaming or drilling, but it seems serviceable.

Might have been better to replace the can opener with it but good job   :tu:

I use the can opener occasionally, but I've NEVER used the eyeglasses driver.

Nice job hsherzfeld  :like:
And thanks for sharing it with us  :tu:

I was thinking of shortening the big flat so it fits into the middle position
Then using a Rebar awl.

Problem: The Rebar awl is a bit too thick and has to be "flattened" a bit. Doable though.

Didn't have the time yet to try out  :dunno:

Your solution looks great  :like:

That would be my ideal solution as well, but I don't have a Rebar awl. I've seen two on Ebay and both were $30+ !

Yeah! I wasn't about to fork over a three-layer SAK's worth of dough for a little piece of steel.
