Will a Surge/ST300 awl fit a Wave+?
on: December 03, 2020, 07:45:10 PM
Hello awl, :D

I'm trying to add an awl to my Leatherman Wave+. This was my first attempt:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,86121.msg2186126.html#_

It will do for now, but I still want a proper awl with a sewing eye and a hollow ground groove for drilling and reaming. I have an awl from a Surge or Supertool 300 (not sure which) on the way to me. From my initial perusing of the forum, it appears that everybody tends to use use the awl from a Rebar for Wave or Charge mods. That might be why I had trouble finding a Rebar awl online for less than $30+. Since I didn't want to fork over the $ equivalent of a three-layer SAK for a little piece of steel, I ordered a Surge/ST300 awl for much less.

Now, my question is whether a Surge awl will fit the Wave/Charge tools. I don't mean the length; I'm sure that I'll have to grind it shorter. My specific concern regards the pivot hole and the locking notch. Will their geometry fit the pivot and lock on the Wave? I've never handled a Surge or a ST300, but I know that they're bigger tools.
Current SAKs: Explorer, SwissChamp, Handyman (modded), Climber, Super Tinker, Tinker, Woodsman (modded), Electrician, Pioneer, SwissTool, Executive, Ambassador, Champion Plus
Current Leatherman tools: PST, Original Wave, Wave, Wave+, Blast, Bond, Curl, Style PS, Micra

Hello
The pivot hole is the same, you just need some dremel to reprofile the backside and the place where the lock sit into the awl.
It's pretty thick, if you like tomorrow i"ll take measure.

Try Loki: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64314.msg2171269.html#msg2171269

He did have some Rebar awls for $12 a while back. Much easier than grinding away at a Surge/ST300 awl to make it fit.
