Check and update your emergency contact lists
on: January 05, 2021, 12:58:46 PM
Last night we got word that Megan's best friend was in a horrific car accident.  Its still early and we don't know exactly how bad it is, but she was air lifted to hospital, and they don't usually do that for a hang nail.

It's a horrible situation, and naturally the condition of her and her husband (also in the car, not as seriously injured, but still badly injured) are foremost in our thoughts today, and will be for the foreseeable future.

The only bright side to this is (at least for us) that the friend's sister reached out to Megan to let her know.

All of our work schedules, coupled with the current worldwide pandemic (i don't give a smurf if you believe its real or not, the results are the same) has kept us all more isolated from family and friends than we usually would be, but we all still need to look out for eachother.

Imagine how you would feel if someone you are normally close to was in a fatal accident and you didn't find out for weeks.

And that is the point of this thread- please think about who should be called in the event that something should happen to you, and make sure they have a list of contacts to call and update/inform.  Your friends may not have contact info for people who should know (like employers or other friends) or they may not even think to call other people.  Giving them a list of people to contact helps them through the shock of hearing that something bad happened to you, so you are really doing them a favor.  If someone is willing to be your emergency contact, try to repay them by making it as easy as possible for them to do it.

As I think about it, I don't think Megan even has my parent's phone number, and I don't have her boss' number, so it seems like we have some work to do ourselves.

Anyways, give it some thought, and make sure to update the list frequently.

100 percent true.  I've had the unfortunate job to notify next of kin of a death, usually from a car accident.  It's a horrible time, not made any easier by not being able to find the family member to tell them.  My prayers are with Megan's friend and her family Def.

So sorry to hear this Boss.  Good reminder to make sure all contact info is current.  I do hope for the best possible outcome.

Thanks everyone.  We both appreciate it.  They are good people, already suffering some significant hardships due to the pandemic.  They really didn't need this too.

We are at that frustrating time where she is stable and under observation while a plan is formulated for what they can do to help her.  So basically there are no updates at this time, and all we can do is wait.

I have started a list in Google Keep and I've added Megan, her father and my mother as collaborators so they all have access to the list in case something happens to me, or Megan and I.
