In reference to which would be carried to the south pole Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Dr Mike Stroud mention using a saw on a pen knife to make a ski stick out of their spare skie during their unsupported crossing of Antatica. I don't remeber the model or either if it was Wenger or Victorinox but there was a picture in one of his books. From memory it looked like a 3 or 4 layer tool possibly a Huntsman.

I went to a talk and book signing by Sir Fiennes last year. One of the slides showed him using a familiar red handled knife to clear mines in Oman! He made refrence to it saying they where issued speacil tools to deal with mines and booby-traps ..... a swiss army knife.

I’ve had a good long think about this and gone over the pros and cons of tools, layers, size etc and in the end if it’s just one knife for ever more then I want all the tools of the Swiss Champ. I’ve carried much thinner SAKS recently and really like the Sportsman and Manager (especially in combination with each other) but Swiss Champ was my childhood prize possession and that’s not really changed in 35 years  :hatsoff:

I can outdo both of you. I used to carry and  really use the first  2010 Victorinox Damast Pioneer. It started to develop a very nice wear patern on the scales. Then I somehow managed to lose it.

 :salute:   :SAKnight:

And I'll add a thumbs up for the Climber choice!   :tu:

I had to mod my favorite SAK since I'm not a big scissors guy (not enough functionality offered above and beyond a knife). So I basically created a Huntsman with a Mag/Phillips layer replacing the scissors and adding a fine screwdriver to the back side of the saw. This to me is the perfect toolset. I need a phillips screwdriver practically on a daily basis and the magnifier comes in handy quite often.

My favorite is the Yeoman, as it has the tools I want in the smallest package.  Inline phillips, scissors and magnifier.  No redundant blade.  But among current (or recent) production, my fave is the Explorer Plus.  That is sorta the sweet spot for me.

I do wish that Victorinox would starting making a Yeoman Plus, and bring back the Explorer Plus, but they have their reasons for not giving what we want.

Explorer Plus.

Yeoman Plus mod.

Plus scales on the Explorer seem like a no-brainer. However, I think it is easy enough to add some plus scales to a standard Explorer. (I think I put a set of Plus Scales on one of my Explorers.....). Great SAK!  :tu:

Can I suggest the true everyday carry for many people (even if they also carry something else). THE CLASSIC.
At some point each day I carry it even if it is only for the trips to and from work (house keys stay in locker at work, thats what the climber is for).
As per the title
Favorite - yea I would say so, I like light pockets so that much utility in a small package is ace. I came round to it after a long search for the perfect keychain tool and honsetly didn't rate it but I have grown to love it as it has proved its place time and time again.
Most useful - The most useful tool is the one you have with you and I always have that, I might need one of my other SAKs but there are times I just don't have them on me for several reasons.
Most often carried - unless I am stuck on a bloody plane then its on my keys.
Best - subjective but its certainly the one I have seen the most, from students to soldiers and secretarys to doctors I have seen them carried by everyone!!

I have a Signature Lite in my pocket right now. And I've got a half-dozen Classics stashed here and there. It is quite rare for me to be without a Classic.   :tu:

I really like white scales on SAKs.

Red is my favorite, of course, and I like black, but white scales look really nice.  :tu:

Gun to my head?  I'd have to go Model 1961/Pioneer/Soldier.

Allowed to cheat once in a while?   Yeoman.

Awl good. But....what do you really carry?

Here it is: midnight, no moon.....your brother-in-law calls you and says he needs help right away. He lives 8 hours away, in a rural location in tornado country (why he needs the help). You need to leave in 15 minutes. Which SAK do you grab on the way out the door? (And did you remember your toothbrush? I don't think you want to borrow his......)

Haha, Mon thru Fri I carry an 84 mm alox of my own construction -- knife blade, scissors, nail tool.

Sat-Sun or vacation I literally carry a Pioneer or Yeoman. :)

I also keep an Explorer and a Cheese SAK in my EDC bag.   You know, just in case.

Here we go, just for Nix I just got up off my keister and went and checked my key/SAK/small-forgotten-things bowl, and this is what I found:

Top row, left to right:  Pioneer, Pioneer, Yeoman, Compact.

Bottom row, left to right: Cadet (w/ letter opener mod), Cadet mod (like a Voyageur but with nail tool instead of cap lifter), Cadet X, Pioneer X.

I also found this nifty little Hamilton I'd forgotten about:

Nice watch!

(Glad I could help.... )

Sweet set of SAK's!   :like:   :tu:

I have to think the PX is on my short list....

..... along with the Huntsman and FX. Although.....I'm awfully partial to a Farmer.

When I was in the service, a Farmer and a Classic were regular carry. If my uniform didn't allow Farmer carry, it would go in my bag. A Classic or Cadet was awl-ways on my person. Of course, that was before the FX came out. These days, if I were going "down range", I think the FX and a Classic would be my choices. (And LM Wave was on my belt or gear.)

In this game, with only one to choose, I'd pick the Huntsman.

Very nice

I think a Cadet with scissors would be an absolute hit, or a Bantam Alox X. I don't know why Victorinox won't bring back the 84mm scissors... Even if they made a backspring so you could use the 74mm scissors, but alas the whole 74mm line is now discontinued as well.

My most often carried and useful has to be my 4 layer modded SAK.  It also has a wood saw.
Back tools are hook w/file, screwdriver and corkscrew.
(Image removed from quote.)

l too have built this version and its the one l would pick. l think l have seen it referred to as a Yeoman plus saw. l actually have also builit a version with a file for my son. I have more or less of carried this SAK daily for the last 3-4 years. The only difference with mine is l used the old mag and Philips layer and l also found that l can store a small rare earth magnet underneath the Philips - this has been really useful as it can be used to hold screws on the tip of the Phillips screwdriver or simply used to magnetize any of the tools so that you can retrieve small metallic items in hard to reach spots.
When l go camping etc. l swap to an outrider and l keep an explorer as a backup ( plus a drawer or 2 of other various SAK's and multitools)

Ok, time to change my answer to this impossible question. I was in a huge hurry to go somewhere very early this morning. Without even thinking I grabbed a Champion.

Although I do always have a Classic on keys, so maybe that’s the answer.

I gave this thread more thought... My general purpose SHTF SAK in my EDC bag is an Outrider... Paired with an Esee Izula, LM Rebar and Knipex Mini Cobra. Also a DMT Diafold C/F.
