Ok, time to change my answer to this impossible question. I was in a huge hurry to go somewhere very early this morning. Without even thinking I grabbed a Champion.

Although I do always have a Classic on keys, so maybe that’s the answer.

I gave this thread more thought... My general purpose SHTF SAK in my EDC bag is an Outrider... Paired with an Esee Izula, LM Rebar and Knipex Mini Cobra. Also a DMT Diafold C/F.

I'm tempted to change my answer to 'Outrider', too. However, in reality, I carry the Huntsman more.

Wish they would do a  version with a serrated blade
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

Nice loadout!  :tu:

The only 111mm I have is the Cheese Master ( :hatsoff: ) I really like the 111mm main locking blade -- definitely looking at adding an Outrider to the collection.

I'm tempted to change my answer to 'Outrider', too. However, in reality, I carry the Huntsman more.

Had to look up the Huntsman in the wiki, it’s almost a mini Outrider... It will be easier to pocket carry, so good choice.  :tu:

I don’t pocket carry any of my 111mm’s they’re just too bulky.

Honestly, my most practical answer to the question “what is the best tool to carry in all situations” is “correct you spelling from ‘tool’ to ‘tools’”!  :pok:  :D

A layered approach works best for me:
1. Tools in my pant pockets: SAK and Spyderco
2. Complementary tools in my EDC pouch (it goes into whatever bag I carry): Rebar, Knipex, firesteel, bit kit, etc.
3. Complementary tools in my bag: Esee Izula, Outrider, DMT etc.
4. Complementary tools in my car: Silky saw, Esee 4, Mora, stove, water bottle, basic camp tools etc.

So most basis are covered even if I skip a layer or two on any given day or are out and about on foot.

Tough question...

There was definitely a time I would have said "Climber".  I have to have the scissors, but since I got a PX and FX, I've felt the extra ruggedness worth the trade-off of fewer tools.  I don't use the saw much, but kind of like to have it when going into the woods, and it doesn't add much thickness or weight.  FX is most often carried at present.

Now, if they would come out with a Deluxe PX (PX + pliers), I would take that over the FX...

It is just a question about your most favorite/carried/bestest SAK. SAK.

It's about the SAK you really carry or the SAK you grab because the house is burning down and you just can't live without it. Or maybe you are grabbing that....uhhh.....Spirit X...because you know that for the next few months, you'll need to rely on that tool alone and it is the tool you have confidence in.

Maybe your favorite is the Winemaster. Not because it is the 'one best' tool for awl occasions....no....but because that is that SAK that you love to use and carry and it puts the biggest smile on your face. It's the SAK you want to have with you always......just in case you run into a beautiful plate of cheese and bottle of wine and that 'special someone' for an impromptu picnic at the beach. (Yeah that will never happen, but you carry the Winemaster because it helps remind you to "never say never"....and you never know.....)

My usualy EDC is either my minichamp or compact but for the one SAK to rule them all for me I pick the Ranger.  The tool density is off the charts compared to the huntsman/field master.  Extra saw and the chisel and mini flathead screwdriver are great.  I swapped plus scales onto mine and added the micro screwdriver and pin so as a EDC it has a lot of tools. I was thinking of a 111mm knife but the tool density on those knives is pretty poor.  I love my 58mm knives and they are the ones I collect the most, but outside my usual urban day to day they are far too lacking in tools to be the one SAK to rule them all.

The Ranger certainly packs a lot of tool for its size.

What about the Handyman?  Bigger sure....but a lot of tool versatility in a pocket tool. (I put Plus Scales on mine.   :D  )

Ironically the tool I used for the romantic impromptu picnic was the climber !! Corkscrew for the wine, main blade for food. It was a couple of years ago in Paris and I had taken the mrs for her birthday. I had sort of planned a picnic by the Seine (hence taking a sak with a corkscrew) but I forgot the wine glasses!!!
Used the small blade to improvise a couple from a water bottle  :climber: :climber:

Ps if I can dig the pics out I will

Too big for me, the ranger is about the end of size that I could comfortably carry in my pocket which is how I prefer over belt holster.  If I am gonna go belt I might as well carry a Swisschamp, cybertool L, or evo28 for the extra screw driving ability.

Great story! Pics would be great!

One of the reasons I like the Huntsman: Mrs Nix and I have benefited from the corkscrew and main blade on picnics and road trips in the US West and Canada. At home a corkscrew is extraneous....on the road the corkscrew has proven handy!

I once found myself in a London hotel room with some cheese, bread, wine, and a hungry Mrs Nix. The cheese and bread succumbed to the Cadet's 84mm blade.....but the wine required some help from the hotel's manager (that would be a person, not a 58mm SAK.....)

Another favorite of mine is also a mod. I removed the scissors from a Ranger so it is only four layers but all of them are slim and there is a useful back tool for each layer. With plus scales on it the tool density is high  :D

Just finished an Explorer with both saws which is rather nice. Got some yellow scales coming for that so will post when finished but also toying with a 84mm sportwalktink that I think could deliver a pretty good tool set. Means taking 3 knives apart! Basically a sportsman’s with a saw added and Phillips instead of corkscrew in the back tools

Man, I don't know. The Rambler is my most carried, being always on my keyring. The Swisschamp is the most useful, but not my favourite because it's such a handful and pocketful. But I always have one within reach. A two layer knife with both openers might fit the "favourite" part of the question in that I find them easy pocket carry and adequate for most daily needs.

I was thinking today inspired by the corkscrew being trademark thread about a mod that would be just about a perfect urban EDC for me. The Syph007 Urban Pioneer in 91mm with cellidor plus scales, dual  openers opposite the in line phillips, scissors, knife layer, backlayered corkscrew+micro screwdriver and awl. Something like a 3 layered Explorer.

But I'd still stick to my original choice of a Ranger for a one SAK to rule them all forever and every occasion EDC.

I have yet to try to use the can opener to uncork a bottle of wine.... I always intend to during one of the 30 Day Challenges... and I always forget.   Being certain that I can open a wine bottle with a Pioneer (or variant), I could go on my merry way without a care in the world.
