Sleeping Woes!
on: January 14, 2009, 07:17:46 PM
Ok I went to the Doc's today and long story short I've got to come off sleeping tablet's

Now without them I can stay awake for 3 days at a time, which isn't good for me, or any of the poor sod's around me, as I tend to get a tiny bit crouchie, and ever so slightly violent too ::)

Soare there any herbal/natural sleeping remedies that actually work ???

Thanks in advance guys :)

I have tried lots of natural remedies and nothing has worked for me.  :(

One thing that does work for me is having a few beers or something before bed, but it's hardly the healthiest or the cheapest option.

How about you re read some of yours and Benners fascinating and scintillating "slagging"  matches over the years  :pok: :P

Seriously, how about physical exercise to the point that you are exhausted and your body may do whats natural to recover ie sleep

I have had moderate luck using Melatonin supplements.

Melatonin is very good as it isn't the drug that makes you fall asleep, more the fact that it produces more of the natural hormone that helps you go to sleep.  That way, you shouldn't feel grotty or sleepy in the morning, nor will it knock you out for the night if for any reason you had to get up.

Rum.

You need a good glass of fine rum each evening after dinner. And eat late.

That way your body is expending energy on digestion, your liver is working overtime on the booze, and you'll be as calm and docile as a lamb.

Sit down with your rum on the couch, put your feet up, turn on some jazz (nothing overly wild though), and relax.

You smoke? No smoking before bed either.

I agree with the rum and eating late... you can also look at certain foods that help to put you to sleep, like turkey.  Also, try and get on a schedule as your body will get used to a rhythm.  Eat, have a shot of something, sit in the tub for an hour with a good book.  If you can't sleep after that your only option is the ball peen method, which has the odd side effect of leaving dents in your forehead.

    :tu: :salute:

Only partially tongue in cheek...  What about a nice cup of cocoa.  I like the malted one :)

I hasten to add that I have no scientific evidence to suggest this would help.  I suppose I could make up some pseudo stuff based on the cocoa stimulated hormones released :D

Well, there is a teeny tiny bit but similar to that found in decaf coffee so I wouldn't sweat it :)

Visit a relative that you're obliged to go round and see.

Sit on sofa, drink cup of tea.

Let others present make polite chit chat.

Next thing you know you're being prodded to wake up 'cause its time to go.  Its amazing, works every time for me  :tu:

Mind you I was sitting in my shed at lunchtime, and was so tired, that despite the cold and the excellent book (Malekith) I nearly droped off :-[

I would actually get into a sleep study. If there is that much of an issue there is something medically there and your Dr. just aint cutting it.

Michael doesn't sleep well.
Michael doesn't do booze.
Booze helps you sleep.

Hmm, I'm sure there's a common theme in there somewhere!

No one is suggesting you pass out in an alcoholic haze, just a nip to relax you.  And as for making you randy, perhaps you could just provide us with the much shorter list of things that don't have that effect on you?  Seriously, spend some quality time on youporn.com before bed and see if that helps!

Ah, well then... you are in luck my friend. Because fine rum is not technically booze. Surely one could not quaff Ron Zacapa 23, Angostura 1919, Westerhall Plantation, an aged Havana Club, or perhaps St. James Hors d' Age and consider it anything less than the distilled blood of angels. No sir, this is not booze.. this is medicine for the disease called life.

Maybe that pub draft turns you loony, well gin has you raving, or the bottle of rotgut hooch your mate brought to your birthday party one year had you fighting with strangers.. this I can understand. I spent my late teens and twenties raging in bars on draft beer and cheap whiskey, making noisy rock and roll, teaching young women the lessons that would later lead to their degree in man hating, and fighting with whatever sap happened to have the misfortune of also being a bottle fueled psychopath in what I considered my territory.

Exceptional rum would not even speak to me in those days. It would have considered me coarse and uncouth, unfit to even handle it's bottle. I drank two-fisted from the bottle regardless of what was available. I was a heathen, a pleb. Days upon days of bread and circuses.

I can't say with any certainty that your metabolism might not somehow turn the liquid sunshine that is the spirit of sugar cane into some kind of Mr. Hyde formula, but I would be surprised.

Besides, you don't waste the good stuff on a bender. A glass or two at home is what you need for nerves and an overactive brain.

Lemon Hart is for benders. I can still down a fifth to myself in an evening even today. But beware if I do.

 :ahhh
