Got myself a Charge ALX today.
on: January 14, 2009, 11:13:37 PM
Besides the Micra I got from WH867 yesterday I got my first LM today, a Charge ALX.

My first impression was that it was heavier than I thought just by looking at the pics and I was surprised that plastic in fact does look nice on a MT and it doesn’t feel like your holding a toy. The one thing that I’m missing when holding the Charge is “The Tool feeling” I get from other tools like the SOG Powerlock

One thing that is somewhat important too me is that you can access most tools with one hand and I therefore love the OHO blades that is on the Charge, at the moment the tool is pretty stiff when unfolding it but recon that it will loosen up as time goes by and the more it will be used.
The wire cutter on the Charge is big and have a large cutting surface, so far it have cut through regular power cord like it was butter, but when it comes too harder stuff I’m not sure how it will hold up butt I think it will do the job.

Since the Charge ALX have no scissors LM have equipped the serrated bladed with a cutting hook, in my opinion this is far better than a scissor since a hook is more superior on a MT when it comes to rescue and emergency situations, the hook for cloths and seatbelts and the knife for rope and heavy duty material. The plain edge blade is…….well…..plain edge, that’s it. I haven’t had a chance to try the saw or the diamond file, yet. The can opener looks like crap and I believe it’s crap also. The big question that comes too mind is why is there 2 bit drivers, 1 is more than enough, at least for my use. The small bit driver is a nice little implement, I will probably never use it but you never know.

When it comes too the sheet, I got the leather one, and I am very disappointed, it’s crap!!!

When I look at the Charge I feel that I have been ripped of because there is almost no tools in the handle, but then I realize that I have a bit kit that belongs too it and then the feeling goes over. The Charge looks like a toy butt when you hold it you realize it’s a tool made for heavy use.

I will EDC it for a while and I will post some pics when I get settled in my new apartment.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

The small bit is great for opening recessed screws on electronics.  I used it a lot around Christmas.

Cool I was getting worried! I would hate to see you get a blast or fuse if you ordered a ALX

How could it be a Fuse or Blast if he said he liked the one handed opening blades; or how he talked about the cutting hook?   :)

I have a theory that the 'X' stands for 'Extra Driver', being the difference between the AL and the ALX, like the XTi and Ti. I guess AL-S (- scissors) wasn't as catchy!

Those AL scales are growing on me in a big way. I'm seriously considering carrying an AL instead of the TTi for a while, or maybe even the SLV. I can't decide and I don't get up early enough to organise some kind of rotation  :P

Dave, I always thought the "X" stood for cutting hook..

Edit: this is what made me come to that conclusion: "The Leatherman Charge ALX swaps out the Charge AL scissors for an aggressive cutting hook on the back of the serrated blade."

Then the TTi should be a TTiX, no?

Yeah - the X has an extra bit driver. How does 'X' translate to 'Hook'? Surely they would have used 'H', like HTi and ALH?

I don't know! I'll shoot LM an email; they usually get back to me quickly! Wait, I'll call them! They are three hours behind, so it's only three there! I'll let you know!

maybe ALX has more "punch" that the ALH :D.....a lot of things sounds better when you trow a X on their names: buck X-track, skeletool CX, etc, etc...
