Locked out of MTO at work
on: January 28, 2021, 04:16:59 AM
Unfortunately, the new year has brought an update to my work's internet policy, or they have somehow flagged MTO as "weapons content"

I can still view on my phone, or use my phone wifi hotspot but it is a bit of a PITA.

That sucks!!! Just browse motorbike stuff then. :D :D :D

Maybe the same peoples who are blocking us from seeing the international Victorinox site!!! No update on that one yet, sadly

This is why, despite enjoying hunting and guns in general for many years, I am not keen, these days, to see photographs or discussions on guns, weapons etc as these get picked by the various algorithms used to categorise sites, thus making a site that  caters to tools to appear as a site that encourages bad actions...

I totally agree dks. MTo is about weapons. So of course it's blocked by corporate networks/firewalls/proxies.
I don't like it but I do understand it.
You should seriously visit vicfan.com. All the hoopy froods are doing it.

I think it is not just because of guns. Knives are as problematic. All those Self-defence/combat/tactical claims, promoting their knives as weapons. Hell, Benchmade has now a knife called claymore, after the anti-personnel-mine (they obviously haven't heard about the Ottawa Treaty)
In addition to that, we have all kinds of discussions including "self-defence with firearm", "Self defence Folder, deployment method" and "the best tool to breaching the neighbours door".

Overall, I guess it kinda makes sense that this site falls under the "weapon" category.

It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

It's not surprising, unfortunate but looking from a workplace perspective not surprising.  We have lots of discussions on a wide variety of topics on many things other than pliers.  All those items could very well be flagged by a workplace to block this site and many others.

Visiting MTO on your mobile device is not always easy.  I do it sometimes but its not something I prefer.

Cowering before the forces of darkness only emboldens them.  And I wholly reject any suggestion that photographs of firearms encourages bad actions.  As for my part, the purveyors of fear and lies will see a gun on my belt and my middle finger in the air until they haul me off to the gulag.

I am listening to the Harry Potter series for about the 4th time.  There are a myriad of parallels between that fiction and our reality, with darkness incrementally insinuating itself into the world while good people are more intent on appeasement than Truth. #CorneliusFudge

I'm working in front of a computer the whole day here. So after work I just don't want to see that thing anymore.
And while at work I do not browse the net for any forums etc. because I know that the network traffic is monitored  :pok:

That leads me to use my phone for MTO and nearly everything else non work related.
And I'm fine with it.

About the false classification of weaponry in forums and the like I don't think we can win that fight. I find it super annoying that we cannot buy any multi tool from eBay.com because of an eBay weapon policy  ::)

Now where are my glasses... this is too small...

Nope it even has the "iconic" FTE (Front toward enemy in morse)

And they have confirmed it in both interviews with BladeHQ and knifecenter

Do not go gentle into that good night.  Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

This is not a weapons forum- there are lots of dedicated weapons forums out there.  This is a multitool forum.

But, this is also a FREE forum, and if people here want to talk about firearms, post photos of swords and so on, then that is exactly what they will do, and the rest of the internet can go smurf itself.  If it makes you feel better, I am getting content violation emails almost daily because of the knife pics people are posting, but they can go screw themselves too.

I'm sorry your work computers are flagging MTO, but we won't be censoring ourselves because all of a sudden society thinks we are bad people.  I know we aren't, and I'm not going to give them an inch.  I'd rather watch this site go down as we are, than sway with whatever fad the internet considers offensive this week.  This is how Harambe would have wanted it.

I think 1984 was a warning, and people mistook it for an instruction manual.

Fortunately I can't read, so I'm not going to follow it like everyone else on the internet.  :-)

Now this is a bit confusing. I've been on hospital/institutional WiFi more than once; and on some, I've had this site be blocked, yet a knife forum not be blocked. Yet, on others, this one wasn't blocked, but the knife forum was.   I honestly don't see the point of blocking sites like this, compared to say Facebook, eBay, and other sites which perhaps probably cause a LOT of wasted time.  Actually, I don't see the point of blocking any sites, say except for those of a "red-light district" nature.

Now I'm starting to wonder what sites and forums I'm not allowed to see? I need to see them so I can judge myself whether I want to visit them or not. Much preferable to some algorithm choosing, censoring or protecting my delicate soul from I literally don't know what. (Maybe I would be thankful if I knew?)

Filters that blocks or censors Multitool.org likely blocks or filters lots of other useful sites and information too. I'm not sure making the internet less useful or valuable is really that great a business model?
