Got an older Tourist today
on: February 03, 2021, 08:49:08 PM
So for quite some time now I've been keeping an eye for a deal on any model SAK with a clip point small blade. And two days ago I found it on a local site for used goods at about $20 shipped. It arrived today and I'm pretty happy with it - it's in decent shape of tools and springs, considering it is 40-50 years old and it has been used and sharpened.
I looked at Sak wiki, all the treads here and the catalogs and I guess it's birthday to be '73 - '74 because of the clip blade and tang stamps, but if someone more knowledgeable thinks differently or can narrow it down further - please share  ::)

So here are the specifications on it, followed by pictures: it's an 84 mm Tourist.

- Big blade : "VICTORINOX SWITZERLAND STAINLESS ROSTFREI"  on one side and + umbrella OFFICER SUISSE on the other

- small blade - clip point, no tang stamps

- can and bottle openers - no stamps. The bottle opener does not have the half stop. The can opener, according to SakWiki is the type used in late 70s to early 80s

- the corkscrew is fluted, with 4 turns

- the reamer/punch - has the groove like the present day ones, does not have a sewing eye. Also has an interesting beveling on the top which in my opinion makes it work better (I might try to add it to a present day one and see what happens)

Also if someone recognizes the logo on the scales (the one with the "E", not that with the cross  :D) I'd appreciate it if you share  :climber:

Not sure what the eye roll is for...but it looks like 1978 to me.

Clip points are used on 84mm later than on 91mm and even later on advertising knives like yours.

That tang stamp doesn’t exist (at least) until late ‘75
And my estimate is for early ‘76.

It was pretty clean, I only sharpened the blades. The big one was the dullest I’ve ever received, I was able to slide a finger on it while pushing down without cutting myself.
It doesn’t come that way in the pictures but the scales aren’t in great condition- they have hundreds of tiny holes in the surface.

I thought that it might be a bow, but looked more like umbrella. I’ve red so much about knives that there is no way I’ve missed that but it seems it slipped my mind. A crossbow it is  :)

Thought that the icon looks like someone wondering about something, wasn’t intended like eye roll. Excuse me about that. Thank you for your input, the info on tang stamps was the most confusing, there were different sources that put the same stamp in different periods. And when I combine that with the fact that most information out there is for the 91mm (thought it’s the same about 84, seems I was wrong)

No problemo. Emojis are like dull blades.  :D

Glad to help. I’d say your assumption that 84mm generally follows 91mm is correct. It’s just there are some exceptions and the 84mm parts often get discontinued a bit later. I think especially within the ‘70s.

But a lot of the resources out there are either inaccurate or outdated. We still have some things to fix here in the Wiki. But have recently updated the tang stamp page for 91mm, and as far as I know it it’s the most complete and most accurate reference so far.
