An old Leatherman PST goes home.
on: February 17, 2021, 01:07:40 AM
As an avid (deranged?) Leatherman collector, user and hoarder, I bought a used PST on eBay in 2016.  It had on it an inscription of a man's name, address, the date of 12-25-1990 and the words "reward for returning".  When I received the PST, I googled the man's name and learned that he was deceased.  The PST went into my collection where it remained for some time.

Fast forward five years to 2021, and I decided to search for the owner’s next of kin.  I wish I had done this in 2016, but better late than never.  A quick google search led me to the original owner Earl's obituary, and his son Bill who was listed as next of kin.  Bill happened to be the first next of kin listed in the obituary, so I tried to track him down.  I googled Bill in the town where Earl had lived, which led me to a few local news articles (in a state 2,200 miles away) that revealed Bill's vocation of ferry captain and where he worked.  Fortunately, his employer had an email directory, and I was able to contact Bill.

Bill confirmed that Earl was his father, and was excited to hear about his father's Leatherman.  He remembered it well.  Bill said he gave this PST to Earl for Christmas in 1990, and bought another PST for himself which he still owned.  Bill told me that when Earl went to the hospital with leukemia in 2001, Earl thought he had the PST with him at the hospital but could not find it.  Sadly, Earl died, and Bill never knew what became of the PST.

I bought Earl’s PST on eBay in 2016 from a Denver, CO pawn shop.  How it got there we will probably never know.  But after contacting Bill and hearing his story, this older model PST with the "L-shaped" flat driver will be on its way to Bill in the next few days.  This is a pre-1992 model, so there is no date stamp, but it was certainly produced no later than 1990.  Though Earl used it as a marine mechanic and in other roles for several years, the PST is in very good condition and the action is smooth.  It bears the scars of many years of good service.  While I hate to see this one go, I am happy that this Leatherman PST will be heading home where it belongs.

Name and address redacted.

That's a great story.  It's nice that the tool is going back to the son who not only gave the original owner the tool but who also remembers fondly his father using it.  :2tu:

The right thing to do. Imagine that for 20 years Bill has missed his father, and now finally has the matching touchstone to help bring him back to happier days.

Earl may have left it at work, or maybe it was taken off his belt when he went to the hospital and got misplaced or shuffled around.

Either way it's where it belongs now

Great story and well done Powernoodle. A scholar and a gentleman indeed.

I bought a job lot of Micras a while back and one of them is engraved, I wonder if it is worth trying to find the original owner as well ?

After sharing this little story with Leatherman tool tales (https://www.leatherman.com/tool-tales.html), I received a Leatherman pin with a nice note from CEO Ben Rivera.
