Fish scaler and saw side by side?
on: February 23, 2021, 08:14:08 PM
Just a quick question.  I have my XLT apart at the moment and I’m getting ready to put it back together and need to know if the fish scaler and saw have a divider between them or are they sandwiched together against each other.

If someone could take a look at their Champ, XLT, or what ever I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.
Tom

Welcome to the boards Tom.

Pretty sure it's no divider. Should be a couple pics over here. SAK Exploded / Dismantled Photos

My Mods: 58mm Workshop, 91mm Picnicker, CyberCompact
Some Fav's: long nail file models, vintage unusual stainless
Quirk: I like the metal file more than the wood saw

I don't have an XLT, but those two tools are side by side with no divider on my SwissChamp.

As others have mentioned side by side, no divider.  I'm looking at my XLT right now.
Rest in peace ColoSwiss, you will always be remembered.

Yes, there's no divider, which to ME means, they're lying about how many layers it is. (To my way of thinking, the layer encompasses the springs, spacers, and tool(s).). So to me a regular SwissChamp is 7 layers. But that's also because I'm contrary.  8)

Depends on how you count :dunno:
How many layers does a Classic have, in your opinion? :)

But I realize my opinion is not standard.  8)

I'm OK with 1 or 2, I don't mind. In fact, to me it's not a relevant attribute of a SAK. I would never organize my collection according to number of layers :)

Another question: how many layers does the FASS 90 have? If you count tools or backsprings it's 3 (SAKWiki thinks so). But if you count liners it's 7. There are 8 liners :)

OOOO I didn't know about that one. So, that's a special case. That does complicate things. But I really don't count the liners, I count the space between the liners as a "bay," and to me the bay should be the indication of a layer. Of course this is all arbitrary to my way of thinking.

Now I want to know WHY they chose to stack up those extra liners in there. Was it to add weight or width? What was the point? The Wiki article doesn't seem to say why.

I wrote the article

It's because the backspring is fairly thin (the protrusion has to match a screw on the rifle, I guess), but the cylindrical tool is much thicker. I should post some photos to illustrate :D

Well bugger all, since we've gone there....

I consider a "layer" to be any one-tool or two-tool set. that comprises the full length of the knife.

Taking my Champion as an example, I count 7 layers
1. Opener Layer (note, I would count the opener layer as #1 by convention, and for consistency)
2.  Mag/Phillips Layer
3. Scissors
4. Scaler
5. File
6. Saw
7. Blade(s) layer

I don't count liners, spacers, or the spaces (bays).  I count the number of toolsets that occupy the full length of the tool.  So a Blade "Layer" on a 91mm would be akin to the Blade/File or Blade/Combo layer on a Cadet or Bantam respectively.

Yes, Eleven,I do believe that you account for them rather standardly. Kudos to you.
