What's a good B'day present?
on: January 17, 2009, 06:08:20 AM
Well my old man's B'day is coming up.

Just wanting to get ideas on what would be a good B'day present for him :)

He's a keen fisherman...which leads me to thinking of getting him a Victorinox Angler/Fisherman, but there's two models(as far as I've seen)...which on is more handy?

Angler

Fisherman

Hahaha...I know he's a secret alcoholic :drink:...I might get the one with the corkscrew :D

The little pliers could be handy for hooks, but I always preferred to have nice pair of scissors when I was fishing.  I always had a pair of needle nose in the tackle box or on my vest.  My vote is the fisherman.

Fisherman. The little bitty plier is not nearly long enough to get hooks, and it's hard to hold it closed with only thumb.

I'd say the scissors will be more useful so I'd go with the fisherman as well.  :)

See as a person that hasn't fished for years then I would have thought the pliers would be just the thing.  But it seems I'm wrong.  What would you chaps use the scissors for?

I thought the pliers would be better too, but my dad thought the scissors more useful, despite having 2 blades

See if you can find this: Deluxe Angler (other shown is the Swiss Flame)

I wished it had Phillips screwdriver in lieu of the corkscrew...it would be handier I think.

This is the only one I have ever seen.

PS: I think I am going to have my mom bring the rest of my SAK collection in the States with her when she comes to visit next month for 3 weeks (the REAL purpose is that we are having a new baby, and she is coming to help out...!!)  I will then be able to show it all, including 1988 made SwissChamp Black w/SOS kit, and a VERY rare Master Craftsman WITH fish scaler and no hook that I bought in Alaska in January 1996.

I would personally go with the fisherman.  The scissors come in handy cutting line, or if you put on another hook, have to trim wool, etc.  I think though whichever model you choose he will be quite happy with either.

I am an avid Fisherman; and what kind of fishing does he do? If it's freshwater a Vic would work well for the relatively smaller hooks.. But, if it's salt water you need beefier pliers like a Pulse or a PST II.. The Vic pliers wouldn't suffice IMO..

Good call on the Deluxe Angler but finding one might be the hard part.  Congratulations on the impending family.  :tu:

The Deluxe will just be to hard to find imo. Yea I would also prefer the Phillips over the corkscrew.

Going to order the Fisherman this afternoon :)
Might take it out of the box and show you guys before I gift it >:D

I guess you already got it,  but since the thread is still going…

If you want beefy pliers AND scissors,  the Aitor Fisherman can do that:

It's one knife that separates into two parts like a hobo knife.

I "made" a Fisherman with pliers for my Dad for Christmas and he absolutely loves it!

Took a while to do, but he said it was the best present I've ever given him, as I'd made it especially for him.

Here's the thread http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,8298.0.html
I used to come here a lot.
