Second Mod: The Picnicker
on: March 05, 2021, 12:37:50 AM
My first mod was a 58mm called The Workshop, which was put together with fine hex-screws (no rivets).  Today, I have my first 91mm mod, and my first, and completely successful I might add, attempt at riveting.

I started with a Huntsman.  I also sacrificed a serrated Spartan.  Finally, I took a fork from a hobo knife.

From the Huntsman, I removed the scissors and the saw. The saw was replaced with the serrated blade from the Spartan.  The scissors were replaced with the fork from a hobo knife.

The hobo fork was about .7mm too thick at its thickest part by the tang.  Lengthwise from the side, it was flat/wedge shaped, not curved as some forks are.  I belt sanded it to a thinner/flatter wedge.  I also heavily modified the tang and took 2-3mm off the tines.  The overall original dimensions were 93mmx21mm.  The fork had a bottle opener built into its shape, which forced the final fork to be taken from the middle of the original, hence the tine shortening. Overall, it meshes very nicely with the rest of the original tools in the knife.

One thing that is good about many hobo knives is that they separate, allowing the utensils to be used individually, including simultaneously.  This is especially important for knife and fork, in my opinion.  So, I set out to make the fork removable. To do this, I turned the hole for the pivot into a slot.  This allows the fork to come out when it is opened.  Actually, it is forcefully rejected by the real Victorinox parts as soon as it gets up to about 90 degrees.  But you can then push it back into the knife at the full open position, using the knife body as a handle if you choose.

The fork, when removed, is a bit short, but usable.  If the length bothers you, you could cut your food and then return the fork to the body, if you wanted.  Or lash it to a stick, I suppose.

Feedback appreciated.

I just looked it up and it looks nice.  If I had the tools, I think I'd go for creating my own fork for mine for a better handle.

Can you tell me how far the Malga 6's fork sticks out from the handle when it is fully open?  This one sticks out 2 3/4 inches (70mm).

Thank you.  It looked a bit shorter, but it is always with the knife body, so not a deficit.

If I hadn't used the existing spring from the scissors, which protrude into the tool space more than some others, I could have made it a smidge longer.  But I got to keep the hook on the back this way.  I don't camp, but I see/read about people using the hook to lift wire handles of pots from camp stoves or to move grates around.

+1

Show it to Victorinox, they may want to use it in future models.
