SAKs & Stamps
on: March 18, 2021, 01:35:12 AM
Here is something that can be interesting. We have a SAKs & Coins thread...why not one with stamps?

To jump this one off, how about a few German stamps from the Weimar Republic. After the Treaty of Versailles blamed Germany for WW1, and made them pay the Victors, the only way they could do this was to print more money. This devalued the Mark so much that it became worthless in the early 20's. There is a story of a women who had a wheelbarrow of money and left it in the street in order to get into a food line. When she returned, someone stole her wheelbarrow and left the money behind. To keep up with the hyper devaluation of the Mark, the postal service was forced to do many reprints with higher and higher values. I find these stamps very interesting. Here is a nice link to more information on the subject.

I think this sort of fits...it does have the toothpick and tweezers...

The commemorative stamps and coin were produced in 1999 to commemorate Y2K.

How about why Mt. Pelee is never shown on a Martinique stamp. Shown with a gold Classic.

Something a bit different...the Mozambican War of Independence, and the 1979 stamps that commemorated the 1975 independence. Shown with a 75mm Student.

A bit of Wiki history on the subject.

I haven't looked through my mothers stamp collection since 2005. I guess this thread is the perfect excuse to keep going through them. I am just selecting certain pages through her various albums and having a bit of fun doing so.

I love the holographic one.  I coordinated the IT team addressing Y2K at Discover Card, so these stamps brought back memories.  I then was brought into a pharma company to help them do it in just a few a months for their sales system.  Good times - really!  I was an employee at both, not a contractor, so I had skin the game.

Anyway, I just found the 1999-2000 Peace set this stamp was from and got it off eBay.

Thanks for the memories!

That is awesome. You will need to buy a copy of the March 2021 Maximum PC. There is a large article on the Y2K bug that you will enjoy.
