They seem fairly shelf stable.....but has anybody had them sit around long enough to really test that theory out?

I've got one sealed in its original Jiffy. A present sent from Fuzzy some 2 years ago?
Got lots of life left in it as it seems  :ahhh

I believe WW2 K-rations came in 'breakfast', 'dinner', and 'supper' versions.  I personally get 'dinner' and 'supper' confused. As a result, I tend to label stuff 'Lunch'.

Even breakfast and dinner.....

OK....I think I have my GSMRE sorted out.

I raided the shelf where I keep leftover food from previous trips (so some of my items might be past their 'best by' date.... :dunno:). I also hit up the local gas station for a couple items and my local grocery store to fill in the holes in the 'menus'.   :tu:

As pictured above, my GSMRE is packed in an 8L dry bag. I used....maybe 6 liters of the available space. The 1 gallon water jug and water bottle (which I plan on using during Chow Day.) are there for size comparison.

I'll try to get a weight for the ration and post that, along with some of the nutritional data, later this evening (after I make me supper!).

Aren’t you supposed to show us what is in the bag?

I have a 7L dry bag that I plan on using to hold my MRE.

I'm sure that'll work....as long as you aren't packing too much coffee.......

Aren’t you supposed to show us what is in the bag?

Good question.  :tu:

I think it would be more fun for each of us to 'reveal' our GSMRE contents as we use them on "Chow Day". DO post a photo of your completed GSMRE on "Storage Day", 31 May, or before. But you don't need to post photos of the full contents until "Chow Day". I plan on doing a photo or two for each meal or snack.

One of the interesting things about eating an MRE is that, unless you've had that specific MRE a couple times before, you don't quite know what you'll get. I always found there was a little sense of anticipation when opening an MRE. Would there be a little bottle of Tabasco?  These days the question is more like, "Will there be a packet of instant coffee....."

(For those who haven't had a late-model MRE, many do not have instant coffee! How can we win any battles with only a handful of caffeinated troops? )

Another size comparison, the real MRE is about one-half the size of my GSMRE. Of course, my GSMRE provides for a full 24 hours of food...and is guaranteed to have coffee.   :D

While I will wait to provide photos of the exact contents until Chow Day, I did make up a 'contents sheet':

As you can see, I made myself the Accessory pack that I wished I had gotten with my MREs. If I say so myself, my accessory packet is a grunt's dream compared to the meagre accessory packets now found in MRE's. Nevertheless, there is nothing in my Accessory pack that isn't found in some country's issued rations.

Three (3) MRE's, the usual 24-hour ration, provides roughly 3600 Kcal.

My GSMRE provides 3596 Kcal. So I guess that makes it a diet MRE.

I didn't intend to match three (3) US MRE's calorie for calorie, it just happened to work out that way. I find that curious.

Inspired by Sea monster, I calculated the macro-nutrient content of my modules:

Breakfast:    794 Kcal      37g Protein     88g Carbs      34g Fats
Lunch:          882 Kcal      20g Protein     74g Carbs      52g Fats
Supper:        978 Kcal      32g Protein     142g Carbs     31g Fats
Snack:         902 Kcal      19g Protein     152g Carbs     13g Fats

Total:         3596 Kcal      108g Protein     456g Carbs     130g Fats

Again, somewhat curiously, my protein and carb content isn't that far off US military targets.

Considering in my emergency bag, I have 3-days + (including a brick of coffee) in a 10L (I think).  I think a 7L should do.  Although, I do plan on my GSMRE to include more comfort items than the one in my emergency bag.

As far as Tabasco, Texas Pete is much better and goes everywhere with me.

Despite our household’s love of hot sauce, Tabasco doesn’t even make it into the house.

That isn’t even all of them.

I’m fond of a hot sauce myself, use Tabasco in cooking more than as a condiment but it’s absolutely essential in a Bloody Mary :drink:  and gave me a good excuse to make one

I knew this already, but still . . . . i don't generally eat instant foods, pot noodles etc, but browsing the website of a supermarket chain and looking at the ingredients the amount of salt in these products is shocking - i'm at that age where i need to pay attention to this smurf ! one day won't kill me but i would think long term consumption of these products probably isn't great for ones health  :dunno:

Maybe we could counterpoint the challenge with an 'Eat Fresh' 24hr ration at a later date.

No Tabasco....and no Crystal!

Everyone knows that when it come to second-string hot sauces, Crystal is way better than Texas Pete. And does Frank's even qualify as a hot sauce?
